How soon should new links show up?
-
Hi I know that GWT's will not show all my links but is there a 3rd party (other than Moz of course!) tool that will?
And how quickly should they show up?
Thanks

Hi Andy all pages indexed, i have set up a new alert for this one, so will be interesting to see when it pops up!
Thanks for the advice

The recently discovered is just that, recently discovered by Moz, its nothing to do with the date the article / link was published.
I use three bits of software, Talkwalker, Opensite explorer and Google Alerts. And if I am honest the only one I care about is Google Alerts as its Google rankings I monitor so the sooner google pick up the link the better.
In terms of time length, I am still getting alerts for links posted years ago on poor links, but get alerts within the day for links of places like Virgin.com so it all depends on when the crawler manages to crawl the page.
Have you checked the page with the link on is crawable. Can the bots find the page. If they can't find the page, it will never get indexed and you will never benefit from the link. So if its been 4 weeks check to see if the page has been indexed / can it be indexed.
If you send me the link I will do some analysis for you.

Well i checked this and nothing i showing and yet i created a link about 4 weeks ago - perhaps it needs a little longer!

4 to 8 weeks seems like ample time to me. Maybe I'm misreading the situation, but doesn't opensiteexplorer's recently discovered links show pages within 24 hours?
-
Thanks Andy, Would you expect pages to have been crawled that were linked 4 to 8 weeks ago or is that still in the hands of the spiders?

This all depends when the page with the link on it gets crawled and by who.
Would recommend using Google Alerts, these are a good way of spotting new mentions / links to your site.
Would also recommend watching White board friday from two weeks ago about using Email alerts for SEO http://moz.com/blog/8-ways-to-use-email-alerts-to-boost-seo-whiteboard-friday
But it does all depend on when the Page is crawled.

Breadcrumbs and internal links
Hello, I use to move up my site structure with links in content. I have now installed breadcrumbs, is it is useful to still keep the links in content or isn't there a need to duplicate those links ? and are the breadcrumbs links enough. Thank you,

Moving to new platform
I am moving a site with great SEO and tons of pages to a new platform. Page names will all be different because they will not have the .html ending and names will change. It is on a system that does not support .htaccess. So, I don't have a way to do 301 redirects. How can I keep my competitive status? Thank you!!

New Website - Un-natural link warning with 2 weeks of going live
I have a customer who has a website, 8 years old. The business has changed, and he has launched a new website (and sub-business_ to handle a particular service. As such the main website will no longer be handling the new service. For purpose of example; The service in question had it's own are set aside on his website, so what we have done is to 301 that part of the site (a single URL) to the homepage of his new website. Service 1
Services 2 (301 to new site)
Service 3 New Business Site This worked well, and within a week his new site was gaining traffic for the service keyword. However, we have now had a un-natural link wartning in webmaster tools. The old page on the old site had minimal links to it (around 400). It had a page authority of 42, and 142 linking domains. The new website has been live a few weeks now, and has had 3 links to it, all genuine. He was on page one for the new business name, and is now page 6. Has anyone else ever seen this happen, and how should we deal with it. We could of course remove the 301 redirect and put in a recon-request, but the 301 seems like thje right thing to have done, and is genuine. Any advice greatly appreciated.0 -
New Site Structure and 301s
We're moving towards a new site with new site structure. The old site has numerous backlinks to past events that won't be published on the new site. The new site will have about 60 future events that are currently active on the old site as well. I was wondering the best way to move forward with the 301 redirect plan. I was considering redirecting the old site structure to an "archive.ourdomain.co.uk" subdomain and redirecting the 60 or so active events to their equivalents on the new site. Would this be a sensible plan? Also for the active events, is there any difference between: _redirecting the old page to the archive page and then forwarding to the equivalent on the new page _ and redirecting the old page directly to the new page

Purchased new site with good SERP ranks, do I operate and build links or redirect the TLD?
I recently purchased a blog within my product category - it has many first page rankings for difficult keywords within my niche. I am wondering if it makes more sense for for me to continue to operate this blog and build links to my site and blog (blog is in wordpress) or to export the XML feed and upload the content to my blog (new site also in wordpress), at which point I would do a 301 at the Top-Level domain. Any thoughts, ideas, or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What is your onsite linking strategy?
So there are a few different routes to take when you're SEOing your site. My quest is to determine which is the best way to approach this. Let's use a real life example of a product. It's project management software, online collaboration software, employee scheduling tool, business process streamlining tool, client management tool and task/to do manager. It works for virtually any industry. I've created my keyword document and it's HUGE. I've created my wireframe with related keyphrases in buckets. Each one of the example keyphrases listed above have slight variations then a whole list of long tails. I have a few options as I see it: Create site sections within the main site that focus on each (This can make the site look slightly sloppy and categories would have to be masked so it doesn't appear spammy) Create a page in the blog relevant to each keyphrase and link all subsequent blog posts within that keyphrase family directly to that blog post (This seems like my best option) and have cta's or conversion mechanisms on this page Link all keyphrases to the home page (Seems like a terrible idea) Not sure if I answered my own question here, but I'd love to hear what everyone else thinks. What are your thoughts?

How should I handle these links?
I recently purchased a site which is in the same niche as my personal blog. MANY of the keywords which I want both sites to rank for, they are already ranking well for (Eg I rank #1 with one site and #5 for the other). I haven't started linking the two sites to each other yet (waiting to announce the acquisition before I do). I have 2 questions for you all... How powerful do you think linking between these sites could be? How do you think I should handle the linking between these two sites?
