Moving a website to a new platform, what are the 10 most important checks to make before moving?
-
I am moving my website to a new platform. The URS's will be the exact same. What are the 10 most important items I should check before I swap over to the new platform.
-
If you are sold on prestashop and are sure you have the URLs taken care of then that is pretty much all you can do in that regard.
I still think you should look deeply at the links after the site is done, and possible do all of this on a dev server to make sure everything copies over as well as you hope.
I am not super familiar with Prestashop. So I am hesitant to give much specific advice on it. Some of my concerns come more with that. I personally use Magento if the client is sold on a eCommerce based CMS. They are the largest, most SEO friendly, and the most protected when it comes to plugins etc. Plus eBay owns it now, so you have that behind it.
Regardless, I don't know if I really even have '10 things" for you.
-
Check links before and after to make sure everything matches up.
-
TEST, TEST, TEST. Try to break your website, on a dev server. Someone else will if you don't, that way you can identify it before somebody else does.
-
Check plugins. Plugins are one of the best ways to ruin a website. One update, or lack of an update can throw an entire website offline.
-
Accept that any change you make will have an effect. SEO is just like Newtons laws. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. Now, in the long run, switching to a CMS could be extremely beneficial, at first it very well may hurt you. I would highly doubt that it would drastically impact your rankings, but in my opinion, you cannot make a change in this world and not have there be some sort of ripple felt somewhere else.
Good Luck

Hi,
The website is an commerce website. ShamrockGift.com is the name of the website. I am moving it from a custom platform to prestashop. We have changed the way the system writes the URS's so we will be able to copy them exactly as they appear on my current website. Also all content etc will be the same. I was going to keep it on the same server. I was hoping drop no ranking but I was worried if google will just crawl it the same.
It is a hard area to get advice on, it is difficult to find an SEO company that has actually did this for a small commerce website.

I think we would all need a little bit of clarification (at least I do) as to what exactly you are trying to do before I can truly give you an adequate answer, but my general advice is as follows!
What is your website? Are you selling something? Providing information? Answering questions? When you say "new platform" what exactly do you mean? Wordpress to Drupal? HTML5 to Magento? Or are you going as deep as switching from a LAMP server to a Linux Server running Bootstrap & NoSQL?
Depending on the size of your website and the amount of traffic there is a lot to consider, like if it's even worth it. And what your website does will drastically effect which platform you choose.
Switching from Wordpress to Drupal for example is pretty much guaranteed to change your URL unless you fiddle with the preferences. And switching from a Static website to a CMS is 100% going to do the same. You would have to spend a decent amount of time making sure every URL is the same. Remember URLs are not only important for the structure of your website, but every other place on the interwebs that links to you.
Anytime you switch a platform, regardless if it's on the top level or at the sever level, there is no way for it to be 100% seamless. Spend as much time as you can making sure you really want to make this change. Clean up as many loose ends as possible, and organize the structure of the site. Make SURE that this is the platform you NEED & WANT so you don't have to change again later down the road.
I agree with Jedi RobertFisher about Screaming Frog, It will scan 500 URLs for free. There is also Xenu's Link Sleuth. Other than that, you are gonna have to spend some time doing some good old fashion QC on the website making sure everything is A-OK!
Good Luck!

Even though you believe the urls are going to be the same, I would suggest running screaming frog before and after just to be sure. If the site is smaller this is less critical, but for a larger site, where you can lose valuable rankings, etc. I would check it.
I would make sure you are indexing after change and resubmit sitemap as soon as change takes place.Best

Hi Robbie,
If the URL's are remaining the same then that is the first thing, you won't have to worry about redirects etc. Make sure any blog posts that you have will remain the same as well and also any RSS feeds you have.
You'll want to know how easy it is to add/remove pages from the CMS and how easy it is to edit pages. If you've got an e-commerce website then look what happens when products become out of stock etc. I
If the URL's are staying the same then you haven't got much to worry about really, it is just functionality really. If you are moving to a new server then there are issues like speeds and uptime to think about but that's a different ball game!

Hreflang and canonical tag for new country specific website - different base domain
I have a little different situation compared to most other questions which asks for hreflang and canonical tags for country specific version of websites. This is an SEO related question and I was hoping to get some insight on your recommendations. We have an existing Australian website - say - ausnight.com.au now we want to launch a UK version of this website - the domain is - uknight.co.uk please note, we are not only changing from .com.au to .co.uk.... but the base domain name as well changed - from ausnight to uknight as you can understand, the audience for both websites is different. Both websites has most pages same with same contents.... the questions I have is - Should we put canonical tag on the new website pages? If we don't put canon tag on new website pages, what is the impact on the SEO ranking of current website? I believe we need to put hreflang tag on both websites to tell google that we have another language version (en-au vs en-gb) of the same page. Is this correct?

Website Redirection Issue
Hi All, Like to know is there any better way to do 301 redirection. My Client whose website name is Online Plants created with OpenCart. Over the period of time he added nearly 10,000's of products and now he is cleaning them ( by grouping similar attribute under one products) which is right way to do. For example , Product A with different size ( X,XL,XXL ) previously had 3 product entry ( A - X, A - XL, A - XXL ) , now he is moving all of them under one. So while moving he is deleting the other two entry. Now whats the best way to inform google . Putting a manual 301 redirection for each and every product is impossible as there are more products. Whats the best way to go ahead on this.

Should I NoFollow Links Between Our Company Websites?
The company I work for owns and operates hundreds of websites throughout the United States. Each of these is tied to a legitimate local business many times with specific regional branding and mostly unique content. All of our domains are in pretty good shape and have not ever participated in any shady link building/SEO. These sites currently are often linking together between the other sites within their market. It makes perfect sense from a user standpoint since they would have an interest in each of the sites if they were interested in the specific offering that business had. My question is whether or not we should nofollow the links to our other sites. Nothing has happened from Google in terms of penalties and they don't seem to be hurting our sites now as they are all currently followed, but I also don't want to be on the false positive side of any future algorithm updates surrounding link quality. What do you think? Keep them followed or introduce nofollow?

New Web Page Not Indexed
Quick question with probably a straightforward answer... We created a new page on our site 4 days ago, it was in fact a mini-site page though I don't think that makes a difference... To date, the page is not indexed and when I use 'Fetch as Google' in WT I get a 'Not Found' fetch status... I have also used the'Submit URL' in WT which seemed to work ok... We have even resorted to 'pinging' using Pinglar and Ping-O-Matic though we have done this cautiously! I know social media is probably the answer but we have been trying to hold back on that tactic as the page relates to a product that hasn't quite launched yet and we do not want to cause any issues with the vendor! That said, I think we might have to look at sharing the page socially unless anyone has any other ideas? Many thanks Andy

Website not being indexed after relocation
I have a scenario where a 'draft' website was built using Google Sites, and published using a Google Sites sub domain. Consequently, the 'same' website was rebuilt and published on its own domain. So effectively there were two sites, both more or less identical, with identical content. The first website was thoroughly indexed by Google. The second website has not been indexed at all - I am assuming for the obvious reasons ie. that Google is viewing it as an obvious rip-off of the first site / duplicate content etc. I was reluctant to take down the first website until I had found an effective way to resolve this issue long-term => ensuring that in future Google would index the second 'proper' site. A permanent 301 redirect was put forward as a solution - however, believe it or not, the Google Sites platform has no facility for implementing this. For lack of an alternative solution I have gone ahead and taken down the first site. I understand that this may take some time to drop out of Google's index, however, and I am merely hoping that eventually the second site will be picked up in the index. I would sincerely appreciate an advice or recommendations on the best course of action - if any! - I can take from here. Many thanks! Matt.

How important are sitemap errors?
If there aren't any crawling / indexing issues with your site, how important do thing sitemap errors are? Do you work to always fix all errors? I know here: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/bings-duane-forrester-on-webmaster-tools-metrics-and-sitemap-quality-thresholds Duane Forrester mentions that sites with many 302's 301's will be punished--does any one know Googe's take on this?

How important is it to create a subdomain?
I was just reading an article about how Hubpages claims they pulled through from Panda by dividing their content up on subdomains. I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar success? Also, Panda aside, how important do you think it is to separate different types of content out on separate subdomains?
