What are your experiences using the new Google Local Descriptor feature?
-
I'm looking for any insight from those who have used the Descriptor feature on your Places listings. Has it helped in any way? Caused issues?
My issues with this feature are described in this question I posted the other day. But I haven't tried using the feature yet, and I'm hoping to learn from some of you who have.

Hi Ira,
People are definitely using it. I know, because I keep having the gut reaction of, "Oh, no, business title spam!" and then having to remind myself that Google now allows this Haha. But, it may not have had such a very observable impact on rankings that would cause people to write about it.

I'd seen those 2 links, good info there. I'm kind of surprised by the lack of data about this issue. I suppose that could mean either that almost no one is actually using the feature, OR that it has not caused any issues or helped anyone out that much.

Hi Ira,
I thought this post of Phil Rozek's was quite good at pointing out some general common sense guidelines surrounding use of the descriptor (http://www.localvisibilitysystem.com/2014/04/28/how-to-use-google-places-descriptors-some-early-best-practices/) but I haven't actually seen an study saying, "I added the descriptor and X happened'.
My main concern about this feature is that Google will take it away at some point. Remember when they suddenly started okaying the use of review kiosks in work places, only to rescind their approval of this? Fortunately, even if they do change their policy on this, no one with horse sense in Local SEO is suggesting that you edit all of your citations so that they match the descriptor on the Google+ Local page, so it's not like this would then create mountains of work should Google decide in future that descriptors are spammy and that they don't want them. Presumably, you'd just have to edit the Google+ Local title.
There's also a pretty good 3 page long discussion of descriptors on Linda Buquet's forum from back when the feature was rolled out in February: http://localsearchforum.catalystemarketing.com/google-local-important/15009-guideline-change-city-keyword-places-title-allowed.html

Based on the answer I received to my other question on the top (link in original post), and some specific requests/needs of clients, I'll be experimenting with it. Hopefully some others will join this conversation.
Has anyone had such a bad experience with using descriptors that you've gotten rid of them?
-
I'm actually interested in this topic and have been doing some research on it. I'm still not 100% clear on the descriptor guidelines from Google and, as a result, i haven't used it. One of my concerns is that if I use the descriptor in the business name that it will trigger the business verification process again. Also i'm scared of putting something in the descriptor that might get my listing removed. I'll just wait until Google clarifies their policy.

Northumberland Ave, Bury Saint Edmunds, Verified
Northumberland Avenue, Bury St Edmunds, Both of them tell me I have 13% inconsistency and the two words that are underlined in red as inconsistent are:
Ave, Saint My google places has it listed as:
Northumberland Ave
Bury St Edmunds My website and 4 of the 11 listings have it as:
Northumberland Avenue, Bury St. Edmunds The other 7 listings have it as:
Northumberland Avenue, Bury St. Edmunds Is this a problem do you think these very slight inconsistencies matter? If so should they all match what google places says the address is (I did try changing this from Ave to Avenue on google places but it wouldn't change)?1 -

Local Listings - where to manage?
I'm optimizing for a a local client and I have suggested we take a look at Moz Local to manage their listings. I showed the customer the data aggregators that Moz Local would push data to. (Which of course they had never heard of). They were concerned about YELP and TripAdvisor, etc. If I populate their local business data into Moz Local > Moz local sends it to > lets say Factual... does Factual send/share this information to Yelp? Or do I need to ad the company information in Yelp or TripAdvisor in addition to what Moz Local is sharing to the aggregators? Would love some feedback! Thanks, Jolie

Google is associating the wrong address with my website in SERPs
I've dealt with submitting address change information to Google (and Yelp, YP, etc.) when they have somehow scraped the wrong address or phone number. This is a little different. I work for the parent company with multiple companies of similar names making up the family of companies. What's happening is that people are searching for one of our companies (Lynden Transport) and getting the correct website results to pop up, but the address/phone # shown below the URL and in the local results screen is for one of our other companies (LTI, Inc.). Customers should be seeing a Fife, WA address but instead are seeing one for Lynden, WA. I've attached a marked up screenshot to better those what is happening. At least customers are generally finding their way to our company but it's causing quite a headache for our customer service reps and customers as they get transferred back and forth on the phone, and confusion for customers unfamiliar with our office locations. I've clicked on the "Send Feedback" link at the bottom of Google and explained what was happening, but beyond that I'm not sure what to do. The information presented isn't wrong, it's just being associated with the wrong company. It seems like a Google logic error and not something I can control or edit. Any ideas? moz-ltia.jpg

Getting Google To Correct Your Citation
Over the last few months, I have done everything other than drive out to California and bring google flowers to get them to edit the stupid zipcode for our downtown Tampa office. Does anyone have any experience getting these types of situations corrected? I'm at a total loss, and I do not know what else I can do. Extremely frustrated...but always grateful, Ruben
