Will links be counted?
-
We are considering a redesign of our website and one of the options we are considering is to come up with something along the lines of http://www.tesco.com/, with rotating top offers.
The question I am wondering is whether or not the links (ie. the blue links on the left side of the main graphic) will be visible to the spiders, and if not, whether there is a way to code it so they are?
-
They'll be easily visible to a crawler. They'll be extracted based on their HTML/CSS elements, which are additional signals of importance and of website structure. Don't worry about it. If the HTML of the page includes the raw text, a crawler will understand it.

Simon,
A good way you can usually see for yourself if links are visible to search is check out the text-only cached version of the page in question. To get there, do a site:domain search and from the drop down beneath the title in the result, click on "Cached" and then click on the "text-only version". On the subsequent page, you can review the text and links that is visible to Google. Hint: use Control F to enable the search function in your browser, type in the anchor text of a link you're looking for (technology & gaming, for example) and your browser will take you directly to the places where that phrase is found on the page.
-
Just as menu options I don't see why those links would not be crawled. What you can have problems with is if those elements expanded to reveal text and then it all depends how those elements are coded. If there are controlled by javascript there is a possibility Google will not read.
So in that case using your example: googling cache:http://www.tesco.com or disabling .js in the browser will indicate what can be crawled.

Helping finding a link
Hi So Ive done a crawl of the site using screaming frog. There are a few old category and sub category pages which don't exist any more but somehow the crawler is finding them. An example is below: http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Home-Appliances/cat/Health-&-Beauty/subcat/Male-Grooming Just wondering if anybody had any ideas about how I could go and find these urls and remove them off the site. Any ideas would be really appreciated. Thanks Andy

Internal linking disaster
Can someone help me understand what my devs have done? The site has thousands of pages but if there's an internal homepage link on all of the pages (click on the logo) shouldn't that count for internal links? Could it be because they are nonfollow? http://goo.gl/0pK5kn I've attached my competitors opensiteexplorer rankings (I'm the 2nd column) .. so despite the face the site is new you can see where I'm getting my ass kicked. Thanks! psRsQtH.png

Removing links - Best practice
Hi I have noticed on webmaster that I have a lot of links to my sites from link building directories. Either I did this many years a go or somehow they've linked to me. Would links to link building directories harm my site? i.e linkspurt.com pingerati.net I have quite a few and just wondering what to do with them. Also I have some customer sites which are massive one site has 38,000 links coming to my site as I have put a credit that I built the site with a link back to mine. It has a low score in Google would this also harm my site? Any advise would be appreciated.

Old documents online as link juice
Each month I upload my auction catalog in different formats (word, pdf and rtf). I have about 9 years of catalogues online that have all been indexed by Google. In each catalog there is a link to my terms and conditions page (which has made the page authority for that page quite high in some unusual, but desired keywords), there is also many, many mentions of non-desired keywords in each of those documents and links to my domain. Is it worth updating all these old, previously indexed catalogues with better keyword juice and more relevant links ? Would they even get re-visited by google ? I suppose that leads to the next question... is it worth adding each of these pages to my sitemap ? To this point I have only added my major pages, not any of the subordinate pages etc.

How does your crawler treat ajax links?
Hello! It looks like the seomoz crawler (and google) follows ajax links. Is this normal behavior? We have implemented the canonical element and that seems to resolve most of the duplicate content issues. Anything else we can do? Example: Krom

Does Yelp pass link juice?
This is probably a profoundly obvious question, but I can't seem to find an explicit answer on the internet, so I'll ask it here: Yelp's links out to local business websites are not nofollow'd, but they go through a javascript-based redirect. My understanding is that javascript redirected links do not pass link juice, so a link from a yelp profile will not directly impact my page authority; however, it looks like yelp does use nofollow judiciously for internal links, so I don't understand why they would allow follow for these "useless" outbound links. Do yelp's javascript-redirected links pass link juice?

First link count - passing of pagerank
I am asking this question after reading similar post. My question is does the first link count rule - Only the first link is counted, if we point to same page with two different anchor texts - applies to anchor text only. Does the PR is passed to the second link ?

Link Share Matrix
Our developers have requested our "Link Share Matrix" - does anyone know what a Link Share Matrix is? Google and the Wiki haven't provided any decent results so I still don't know exactly what it is. Thanks in advance 🙂
