Outranking a definition result
-
Hello,
I was just asked to help rank a keyword that has fairly low competition but the #1 result is a definition.
I do not want to post the keyword here but for an example type in "resting" and you will see that Google returns a definition of the word. Now, lets say the result directly below the webster definition is a company with the name "Resting".What type of tactics would you employ to outrank a definition?!
My first guess would be that I should establish this brand with Google by creating a Google Places listing for it. What else could I possible do? Should I just build standard relevant back links and optimize the content as normal?
Thanks in advance!

As others have said, that result is not, unfortunately, something you can outrank - it's not organic, and it doesn't have to compete with organic listings. Once Google determines the query requires a definition result, that one-box will be at the top. Why does Google determine this query needs a definition? Unfortunately, we're not entirely sure. It's possible you could do something to influence that decision, such as build a brand so powerful around the keyword that Google shifts the entire query to a different intent. Honestly, though, that's a tall order.
So, what are some more realistic options?
(1) Buy AdWords ads. Yeah, I know it's not the answer you expect from me, but the top 3 ads come above one-boxes (try a search for "assurance" to see what I mean). Sometimes, you do what you gotta do.
(2) Work on mid-tail keywords surrounding that keyword. There are probably variants on "resting" that are more advantageous to rank for and will convert better. If your client isn't a household name, then people searching for "resting" probably aren't looking for them, and this isn't really that great of a keyword to obsess over.
(3) Focus on "brand" signals like social accounts (especially Google+), get yourself into Freebase, and see if it's possible to get some kind of Knowledge Graph entity related to your brand. This is going to take some doing, but it's possible.

Could you provide a bit more context? If you are simply trying to outrank the definition of a keyword, it's not going to happen. Google is pulling that definition from its Knowledge Vault, and their algorithm has determined that result most likely to be related to that term is the definition. However, if, for example, you are trying to rank for the name of a business that is also simply a word (let's say "Twist"), you may be able to out rank it in local searches. Setup a Google My Business account and a Google Places page, and start optimizing for Local SEO (I've never done this, so I don't have great tips).
Unfortunately, if you are trying to outrank the definition of a word Google's algorithm believes most searches are looking for the definition, it's likely not going to happen. If it's the name of the business, then you may eventually be able to outrank it, but if it's just a keyword, it is almost certainly impossible.

I haven't successfully outranked it to be honest. I've never seen it done...
If it's for a phrase/questions, and you want to outrank the answer generated by google, try to be the one that is linked in the answer by analysing how the current one got there. That's the fastest (but still hard) way.

Search box within search results question
I work for a Theater news website. We have two sister sites, theatermania.com in the US and whatsonstage.com in London. Both sites have largely the same codebase and page layouts. We've implemented markup that allows google to show a search box for our site in its results page. For some reason, the search box is showing for one site but not the other: http://screencast.com/t/CSA62NT8 We're scratching our heads. Does anyone have any ideas?

How Google organic search results differ in Local Searches?
We all know Google displays nearby results by locating our ip address. My question is how does these results differ? For eg 1. If someone from Newyork search for "chinese Restaurant in Newyork" 2. Someone from California search for "chinese Restaurant in Newyork" 3. Someone from California changes his location to Newyork and search for "chinese Restaurant in Newyork" What are the factors the Google SERP looks into to display the result in local terms?

Customer Experience vs Search Result Optimisation
Yes, I know customer experience is king, however, I have a dilema, my site has been live since June 2013 & we get good feedback on site design & easy to follow navigation, however, our rankings arent as good as they could be? For example, the following 2 pages share v similar URLs, but the pages do 2 different jobs & when you get to the site that is easy to see, but my largest Keyword "Over 50 Life Insurance" becomes difficult to target as google sees both pages and splits the results, so I think i must be losing ranking positions? http://www.over50choices.co.uk/Funeral-Planning/Over-50-Life-Insurance.aspx http://www.over50choices.co.uk/Funeral-Planning/Over-50-Life-Insurance/Compare-Over-50s-Life-Insurance.aspx The first page explains the product(s) and the 2nd is the Quote & Compare page, which generates the income. I am currently playing with meta tags, but as yet havent found the right combination! Originally the 2nd page meta tags were focussing on "compare over 50s life insurance" but google still sees "over 50 life insurance" in this phrase, so the results get split. I also had internal anchor text supporting this. What do you think is the best strategy for optimising both pages? Thanks Ash

I have search result pages that are completely different showing up as duplicate content.
I have numerous instances of this same issue in our Crawl Report. We have pages showing up on the report as duplicate content - they are product search result pages for completely different cruise products showing up as duplicate content. Here's an example of 2 pages that appear as duplicate : http://www.shopforcruises.com/carnival+cruise+lines/carnival+glory/2013-09-01/2013-09-30 http://www.shopforcruises.com/royal+caribbean+international/liberty+of+the+seas We've used Html 5 semantic markup to properly identify our Navigation <nav>, our search widget as an <aside>(it has a large amount of page code associated with it). We're using different meta descriptions, different title tags, even microformatting is done on these pages so our rich data shows up in google search. (rich snippet example - http://www.google.com/#hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=http:%2F%2Fwww.shopforcruises.com%2Froyal%2Bcaribbean%2Binternational%2Fliberty%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bseas&oq=http:%2F%2Fwww.shopforcruises.com%2Froyal%2Bcaribbean%2Binternational%2Fliberty%2Bof%2Bthe%2Bseas&gs_l=hp.3...1102.1102.0.1601.1.1.0.0.0.0.142.142.0j1.1.0...0.0...1c.1.7.psy-ab.gvI6vhnx8fk&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.44442042,d.eWU&fp=a03ba540ff93b9f5&biw=1680&bih=925 ) How is this distinctly different content showing as duplicate? Is SeoMoz's site crawl flawed (or just limited) and it's not understanding that my pages are not dupe? Copyscape does not identify these pages as dupe. Should we take these crawl results more seriously than copyscape? What action do you suggest we take? </aside> </nav>

Local results vs Normal results
Hi everyone, I am currently working on the website of a friend, who's owning a French spa treatment company. I have been working on it for the past 6 months, mostly on optimizing the page titles and the link building. So far the results are great in terms on normal results : if you type most of the keywords and the city name, the website would be very well positioned, if not top positioned. My only problem is that in the local results (Google Maps), nothing has improved at all. In most of the same keyword where the website is ranking 1st on normal results, the website doesn't appear at all on the same keywords in local results. This is confusing as you would think Google think the website is relevant to the subject according to the normal results but it doesn't show any good ones in a local matter. The website is clearly located in the city (thanks to the pages titles and there's a Google Map in a specific page dedicated to its location). The company has a Google Places page and it has positive customers reviews on different trusted websites for more than a year now (the website is 2 years old). I focused my work concerning the link building on the local websites (directories and specialized websites) for the past 2 months. The results kept improving on normal results but still no improvement at all in the local ones. As far as I know, there is no mistakes such as multiple addresses for the same business etc. Everything seems to be done by the rules. I am not sure at all what more I can do. The competitors do not seem to be working their SEO pretty much and in terms of linking (according to the -pretty good- Seomoz tools), they have up to 10 times less (good) links than us. Maybe you guys have some advice on how I can manage this situation ? I'm kind of lost here 😞 Thanks a lot for your help, appreciate it. Cheers,
