Moving from www.domain.com/nameofblog to www.domain.com/blog
-
Describe your question in detail. The more information you give, the better! It helps give context for a great answer
I have had my blog located at www.legacytravel.com/ramblings for a while. I now believe that, from an SEO perspective, it would be preferable to move it to www.legacytravel.com/blog.
So, I want to be able to not lose any links (few though they may be) with the move. I believe I would need to do a 301 redirect in the htaccess file of www.legacytravel.com that will tell anyone who comes knocking on the door of www.legacytravel.com/ramblings/blah blah blah that now what they want is at www.legacytravel.com/blog/blah blah blah
-
Is that correct?
-
What would the entry look like in the htaccess?
Thank you in advance.

Well, it sounds like it may not be worth the brain damage to make the change. Is that what I'm hearing?
If that's the case, I'm good with that!

I am not sure if there is any big of a SEO different in having your own blog name or the word blog itself. It is only important when you have lot of audience who is linking back to you and you have witnessed that as a standard they link your blog section by adding /blog to your domain name in any other case having a blog name or a word blog will make no big difference.
If you ideally want to redirect just go to your .htaccess file and include the following one line code.
Redirect 301 / ramblings /blog (code valid for your blog)
Once you will do that the browser will read the instructions and take you to the new URL instead of the previous one and your link juice will also transfer to the ne domain.
Hope this helps!

You didn't ask about this but I think that it is worth considering... Let's say that you have a wordpress install on somedomain.com/blog/ and another one on somedomain.com/anythingelse/.
The install at somedomain.com/blog/ is going to attract a lot more weasels and is almost askin' people to throw wrenches at you.
Just my two cents.

You are spot on.
RewriteRule ^subdirectory/(.*)$ /anotherdirectory/$1 [R=301,NC,L]

Hi cathibanks,
I don't foresee you getting a significant SEO impact by switching from /ramblings to /blog. If users easily understand that /ramblings is your site's blog, then that is all you need.
Will you get a ranking boost because you now have 'blog' in your URL? No.
Continue to concentrate on creating value-added, unique content and your blog pages will naturally increase rank.
If you think it would help user experience by switching to /blog, then I do suggest making the switch. Since you're on WordPress, you don't need to access your .htaccess file, instead you can usually use your SEO plugin (Yoast) to create a custom redirect for any page.

Worth redirecting non-www to www due to higher page authority with www?
When checking my domain I receive higher page authority for www vs non-www. I am considering moving to the www url and applying the necessary redirections but wanted to quickly check if this is worth it. The root page authority https://www.diveidc.com : PA 40 https://diveidc.com : PA 35 By redirecting would I just be transferring over negative signals to the www domain, thus voiding the point for doing any redirect at all?

Moving Blog and 301 Redirect Advice
Hello Moz Community, We recently moved our blog from its own domain to a directory on our website. We do not plan on moving over all the old blog posts because a majority most of them are based on events or time-sensitive information that has passed. We need advice on what to do with all of the old blog URL's? Should we just 301 all of them to the new blog directory on our website (www.domain.com/blog)? Should we take the time to move over all the old blog content and put the appropriate 301's in place? Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Link building to ROOT domain OR to WWW.?
Hello, Here I come with one more 'sensitive' question, hoping that you SEO gurus could give some input on. My title explains pretty much what I'm wondering about, but let me give you some short data. I have from .htaccess file set that all traffic goes to WWW.mydomain.com. I know that it is 'better' for search engines not to have duplicate destinations as that can give decreased page rank because of 'double content'. As for search engines http://domain.com and http://www.domain.com is totally different domains. Now wondering one thing: If I build a several thousands of backlinks at various sources, blogs, directories, web sites etc etc. - shall I link to domain ROOT or shall I include WWW prefix? When looking at Moz Keyword Analysis for my domains, I can see a block about 'Linking Root Domains' and 'Page Linking Root Domains'. But no 'www' variable (sub-domain) there. As I have already set canonical part so everything shows with WWW on my website - what logic shall I use when building backlinks? How will search engine translate the link juice in regards I wrote above? Thanks in advance, great forum!

My beta site (beta.website.com) has been inadvertently indexed. Its cached pages are taking traffic away from our real website (website.com). Should I just "NO INDEX" the entire beta site and if so, what's the best way to do this? Please advise.

Domain forwarding
Hi Is it ok or bad practice to domain forward shorter more memorable snappier domains used for promoting a website to a longer domain where the website actually lives, such as: Promoting in social media profiles, emails and offline literature a domain with forwarding set up like: www.brand.com To the main website: www.brandincludingprimaryproductrelatedkeyword.com And if ok (not bad practice), since its the forwarded domains that are being promoted they are hence the links most likely to be shared on social media and other websites so will they be treated like 301's and 'link building' for those will pretty much equate to link building for the main domain (or not) ? Many Thanks Dan

Business/Personal Blog Duplicate Content
Quick Question. I am in the process of launching a new website for my IT business which will include a blog. I also want to start up my personal blog again. I want to publish some blog posts to both my business and personal blogs but I don't want to have any duplicate content issues. I am not concerned with building the SERPs of my personal blog but I am very focused on the business blog/site. I am looking for some ideas of how I can publish content to both sites without getting hurt by duplicate content. Again, I am not concerned with building up the placement of my personal site but I do want to have a strong personal site that helps build my name. Any help on this would be great. Thanks!
