Exchanging Follow/No-Follow Links with Parnter Site
-
Hi all,
Wondering how Google would interpret the exchange of a no-follow link for a follow link between partner websites. I have a potential referral relationship with a business in my niche and we are hoping to cross-market.
The goal would be for my link on his page to be a follow link, while the link to his business on my page would be a no-follow. Would my site get the benefit of a natural link in that scenario or would the two essentially 'cancel each other out' regardless of the follow/no-follow nature of the link?
Thanks in advance for any help!

RIch,
A lot of theory goes into link building because many aspects of it can be hard to measure consistently across the board and too many factors can come into play to even account for. An exact answer to your question would need to take into account many factors which you have not described in your question. What is the strength, age, authority of the domains? Is there any relationship between those who have registered these two domains or do they own other domains together? What do their respective link profiles look like and recently, how have links been added to each domain?
When you say "If two sites (follow)link to each other, clearly that does not offer any link juice.", your "clearly" isn't necessarily so. For example, if a high domain authority site and a low domain authority site followed-linked to each other, the one might expect that the low domain authority site would benefit most.
Don't confuse technicalities with absolutes. Many of those who have are now battling the Penguin.

Any link that is followed will provide some level of link juice - even if it is reciprocal. The algorithm just views the reciprocal link as having less value. They do not void each other out to use your terms in my opinion.
I think the way you are going about it is the best way for this practice.

Thanks, Robert. My question is more of a technical inquiry rather than a theoretical link-building question.
If two sites (follow)link to each other, clearly that does not offer any link juice. But if one site agrees to host a link as a no-follow strictly for visibility/leads/etc while the other partner hosts a follow link, would that provide an added benefit to the site with the follow link from an SEO perspective or do they still void each other out in the eyes of the algorithm?

Rich,
If this was the only link coming to your business it might have some plus or minus effect, but a single link from a single site is probably not good or bad for you. With links it is the overall picture that matters more. I would do it if it makes business sense; if it is being done just to exchange links I would not.

When/ What Links to Disavow?
We have an older website started in 2000. We have thousands of backlinks which we believe are hurting us. Starting with Panda our site has been devastated, traffic wise, from a million + page views a month to 1/3 of that now. We've never solicited links, never paid for them, they just happened. It seems every "search engine" and spammy site on the web has links to us. Hundreds if not thousands from sites like , 29searchengines.com, 55 searchengines.net, and on and on.. 1. How does a site know when the links are harmful?

Best On-Site Internal Linking Practices?
Hi everyone, Our company works extensively with ecommerce website, and we're beginning to wonder with all of the impending Google updates what our best bets for internal linking practices will be, in particular when it comes to menu options. We typically set up our navigation with top-level categories in the main menu, then drop downs to the sub-category level pages. Our question is, should the links in the drop-down menus be followed, and if so, should they be followed links across all pages of the website, or just on the homepage menu list, or not at all? We're trying to figure out what will pass the most internal linking power without being too much and overly "spammy," I guess. Thanks for your input!

Does Open Site Explorer show juice passing links
I'm a little confused between all the link types. Internal / External - easy Linking Root Domain - easy Followed / No followed - easy But then there's talk about "juice passing links" and I can't quite get how this is defined, and why it's something you can get from the API, but not from Open Site Explorer... or can you get that info from OSE?

My best links not showing in Open Site Explorer
Why is it that OSE does not display my strongest backlinks, including those from Wikipedia, a legitamite .edu, Squidoo, etc.? Some of those links have been live for a long time, and some (not all) are "dofollow". Impossible to do a thorough backlink analysis in this situation.

Linking to a site in the US from a site in the UK - Good, bad or not important?
Would linking to a site in the US from the UK do harm or good if the site being linked to is industry related? i.e. a UK web design company linking to a US web design career site.

Links from Domain Portfolio Advertising Sites
I recently purchased a domain from a someone with a large portfolio and my site's link is still found on thousands of his one page/low quality sites. I find these links on Open Site Explorer but not in WT. Should I ask the portfolio owner to remove the link from his low quality domain advertising sites?

So I ran into a site that was not ranking 4 days ago and has over 2 million links to it on some keywords. My guess is this is a link bomb, but the issue is this is pushing one of my sites down. Does anyone know a good way to over come a bomb like this?
So I ran http://www.riogrande.com/ into this site not that long ago and wanted to see if any other SEO's have an opinion on it. I've seen a Google bomb before, but the amount of links going into this URL is insane. The thing is how does one over come a Google Bomb? Do you just wait to see what Google does or do you just hope to rank under that URL? I should also note that it appears that all the keywords to it are relevant to the sites content. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks
