Best ways to build up Page Rank (PR)
-
What are your sure fire ways to build up page rank, quickly and effectively for long term gains.
Do you have a check list?
-
High PR alone does not mean much, so don't waste your time. Evidence for this is the fact that you can buy expired high-PR domains, and they will give no juice.
mozMetrics (PA & DA) are far more telling. To build up your credibility, it all boils down to 1) original content and 2) how well you are able to distribute this content on the net.
-
Your best bet is to learn how to find dofollow links from high page rank sources.
A good way to do this if you have limited experience is to find a forum or registry required site that allows you to comment while getting a link to your profile with each comment. Also make sure that the profile allows you to have a dofollow link to your site. It is not too hard to post comments on pages and threads with 4PR+ which will boost your profile a great deal and thus boost your site's PR while being a legitimate way to provide value and get good results for yourself too.

buying and selling links is frowned upon by google.
-
Since I've become a Pro member of SEOMoz and started using the SeoMoz toolbar and rank parameters I've become obsessed with MozRank, MozTrust and Domain Authority much more than with PageRank.
Moreover, when estimating a site as a potential link source I always look at it's domain authority first, even if the individual linking page has low PA. I may be mistaken, but my strategy is to build good overall authority for my domain, getting links from other sites with good DA.
-
You need to create unique content, then attract relevant organic links to the page. Over time google will reward your website with a higher page rank
-
If you are still focused on PR then the quickest and best way to do it is quite simple through original and relevant content with an ongoing link building strategy.
Simple eh?
-
I used to be obsessed by Page rank, thats before i discovered SEOMOZ! I havent looked at my PR for over a year now! .... hmmm maybe out of interest i should check!!!!?!?!
-
I would say try to educate the client but I know where you're coming from, some clients simply don't want to be educated on it. They heard from their mate or read in some forum that something is important and that's all that matters... I've had a couple like that lol. Thankfully though, they seem to be few and far between, with the majority of clients wanting to understand it all as much as possible which is great
-
Well I guess it will be a while before enough awareness really spreads about PR not doing a lot... but, I would assume most of those requests are from people who don't know that link acquisition should be based on a lot more than PR (and PR being at the lower end of the links value). Possibly those same people who are still trying to trade links based on PR... the ones that send the spam emails lol.
-
No offence taken. And I understand and agree there are no fast gained sustainable shortcuts to long term SEO - I have this conversation daily! However unimportant it is with grand scheme of things, sometimes you get a new client who will no be educated and only cares about PR - Hence to keep said client you go get some PR for them!
-
I don't agree. Link selling can be a very lucrative business. In fact I believe it's more the other way around. High PR sites attract more buyers e-mailing you requesting for links, and you they're simply willing to spent more, wether it's justified or not. And in terms of getting higher PR, which was OP's question, the answer can't be easier: get more quality links and keep updating your site. IMHO the PR game hasn't changed.
-
Sorry Mark, neither of us meant to offend. It's just that as Ryan said there really aren't any shortcuts with it, so when you ask for quick ways to build PR it's easy to assume you're looking for a shortcut. So Ryan was just trying to give you some good sound advice there, since a lot of people do ask similar stuff and don't understand about there not being shortcuts. Plus PR building really shouldn't be anywhere on the agenda for an SEO anyway since it's of such little consequence to any outcomes.
-
I'm not really going to start selling links on sites with PR that I have created! Thanks for the advice though
-
Then you'd be selling links based on PR, which doesn't make much sense. I get spam emails offering links from high PR sites, but we all know that it doesn't work that way. A site may have high tool bar PR but really have very little trust and authority, with links that are next to worthless. At the same time, a site may have fairly low PR but pass great link juice.
PR isn't up to date, and it's a single metric (a quite unimportant one) among hundreds. I would look at MozRank over and above PR every time, along with the age of domain, the site's own rankings, the number of links already coming off the site, where my link would go, and so on...
People do buy links from high PR sites but only because they don't understand that it's almost meaningless nowadays. It's kind of a scam selling them on that basis.
-
I have a great deal of SEO knowledge and I have a few ways of getting a site to have PR but I'm always hungry for more knowledge, hence the question on this SEO q+a site!
-
But what if my business plan was to build sites gain PR then sell links?
-
Steve is absolutely correct.
I know it is not what you want to hear, but there is no magic bullet. Your question is right up there with "How can I build muscles fast" or "how can I get rich fast".
There is a long road of acquiring SEO knowledge and best practices, then applying them slowly over time. If you want anything faster, you need to hire a SEO specialist and be prepared to spend a lot of money on all aspects of building your web presence.
-
The check list is below:
1. Don't worry about PR
That's it
Honestly, don't think about building up page rank, think about your business objectives and goals, then create strategies based upon them... no strategy would include building up Page Rank, and Page Rank really doesn't mean a lot anyway so there's no purpose that a campaign in building up PR can serve really.

How to best add affiliate links in a way that minimizes panda risk?
We have a site of about 100.000 pages that is getting several million of visitors per year via organic search. We plan to add about 50.000 new pages gradually in the next couple of months and would like to add affiliate links to the new pages. All these 50.000 new pages will have unique quality data that a team has been researching for a while. I would like to add in the area under the fold or towards the end of the pages in an unobstrusive way affiliate links to about 5 different affiliate programs with affiliate links customized to page content and of real value to visitors. Since affiliate links are one of the factors that may trigger panda I am a bit nervous whether we should add the affiliate links and if there is any way of implementing the affiliate links in a way that they may be less likely to trigger panda. E.g. would you consider hiding affiliate links from google by linking to intermediate URL (which I would mark as noindex nofolllow) on our domain which then redirects to the final affiliate landing page (but google may notice via chrome or android data) ? Any other idea?

Why is Google ranking irrelevant / not preferred pages for keywords?
Over the past few months we have been chipping away at duplicate content issues. We know this is our biggest issue and is working against us. However, it is due to this client also owning the competitor site. Therefore, product merchandise and top level categories are highly similar, including a shared server. Our rank is suffering major for this, which we understand. However, as we make changes, and I track and perform test searches, the pages that Google ranks for keywords never seems to match or make sense, at all. For example, I search for "solid scrub tops" and it ranks the "print scrub tops" category. Or the "Men Clearance" page is ranking for keyword "Women Scrub Pants". Or, I will search for a specific brand, and it ranks a completely different brand. Has anyone else seen this behavior with duplicate content issues? Or is it an issue with some other penalty? At this point, our only option is to test something and see what impact it has, but it is difficult to do when keywords do not align with content.

Optimized pages ranking lower than homepage with keywords
Ok, I know this question has been out there before, but i don't know how fo search for it specifically enough. I have several keywords that rank higher on my home page. As you know MOZ assigns keywords to whichever page on your site popping up in search first. So even though i have A-grade optimized pages for a particular keyword, that page may not pop up BEFORE the homepage for instance, on searches. In many cases, the homepage is grade "F" for a particular keyword, yet its pulling up first for most of my keywords. I know that my homepage has more rank because it gets the most visits and i'm sure we can't really optimize the homepage for EVERY keyword. What is the best thing to do in this situation? Do i just need to wait for my optimized page to catch up in rank, or is there a trick to optimizing homepage to ALL key words at grade "A" level? Do i need to keep back-linking to my optimized page directly to get the juice up? I created all these great optimized pages for specific keywords, but my homepage which shows "F" grade is the one pulling up 4th or 5th on searches Help??

Best way to link 150 websites together
Fellow mozzers, Today I got an interesting question from an entrepreneur who has plans to start about 100-200 webshops on a variety of subjects. His question was how he should like them together. He was scared that if he would just make a page on every website like: www.domain.com/our-webshops/ that would list all of the webshops he would get penalised because it is a link farm. I wasn't sure 100% sure which advise to give him so i told him i needed to do some research on the subject to make sure that i'm right. I had a couple of suggestions myself. 1. Split the amount of pages by 3 and divide them into three columns. Column A links to B, B links to C and C links to A. I realize this is far from ideal but it was one of the thoughts which came up. 2. Divide all the webshops into different categories. For example: Webshops aimed at different holidays, webshops aimed at mobile devices etcetera. This way you will link the relevant webshops together instead of all of them. Still not perfect. 3. Create a page on a separate website (such as a company website) where the /our-webshops/ page exists. This way you only have to place a link back from the webshops to this page. I've seen lots of webshops using this technique and i can see why they choose to do so. Still not ideal in my opinion. That's basicly my first thoughts on the subject. I would appreciate any feedback on the methods described above or even better, a completely different strategy in handling this. For some reason i keep thinking that i'm missing the most obvious and best method. 🙂

On Page vs Off Page - Which Has a Greater Effect on Rankings?
Hi Mozzers, My site will be migrating to a new domain soon, and I am not sure how to spend my time. Should I be optimizing our content for keywords, improving internal linking, and writing new content - or should I be doing link building for our current domain (or the new one)? Is there a certain ratio that determines rankings which can help me prioritize these to-dos?, such as 70:30 in favor of link-building? Thanks for any help you can offer!

Home page mysteriously not ranking at all
Hey everyone, I'm baffled by a situation. I started working on www.hushabyephotography.com almost 3 months ago. The first thing I did was changed the address (was previously blog.hushabyephotography.com) and updated all of the links pointing from the old name to the new "www" and used 301 redirects for canonicalization. Have also built some additional links, added content to the site, and performed on-page optimization to rank for the primary key phrase "san diego newborn photography". But ranking is no where to be found, I searched for the key phrase, and at rank 190 is a random subpage, not even the home page. The listing had also disappeared from Google Places a few weeks ago after the client updated their listing (which I believe was the result of the known Places bug (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/why-you-may-need-to-hide-your-google-places-address-asap). I'm at a loss here for ideas, as I've never failed to at least have a site on the radar. There aren't any spam links so I don't think any penalties are the result. One last thing, it ranks on page 2 in both Bing and Yahoo... Please help me out Mozzers!!! 😕

Is there a way to redirect pages from an old site?
I have no access to an old wordpress site of a client's, but have parked the domain on their new site, gone into webmaster central and requested a change of address and wait... the old domain still shows in the search listings in place of the new site domain and the log files show 404 errors from links to the old site which go nowhere - can anyone suggest a way of managing this on the new site - is there a workaround to what should have been done - 301 redirects on the old site before it was taken down. many thanks

What is the best way to consolidate two websites into one?
Someone within our company's IT department just sent me some SEO advice that I believe is bogus. Can someone let me know if my initial gut-check is correct? We have two websites selling two identical catalogs of products but branded differently (color scheme, wording, etc.) like this: www.one.com
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Ryan-Ricketts
www.two.com We want to shut down the second website. I think we should set up 301 redirects from all pages on the second site to corresponding (relevant) pages on the first. In theory, this would pass over 90% of the earned link juice from one to the other. Here is what my IT peer said: "We could keep www.two.com set up indefinitely and just have it as the same web site as www.one.com (so two URLs but one site). This would help alleviate any issues with search engine results, etc. (Although I believe Ryan would agree this does impact www.one.com's rankings a bit, but shouldn't be a problem as long as we don't advertise both.) Google doesn't know they are on the same site, so you could technically get away with it. And it helps in indexing multiple pages on our sites." ... but wouldn't this be a big no-no because of the massive amounts of duplicate content it would create?0
