Google is showing 404 error. What should I do?
-
Dear Experts,
Though few of my website pages are accessible, Google is showing 404 error. What should I do? Even moz reports gives me the same.
Problems:
1. Few of my Pages are not yet catched in Google. (Earlier all of them were catched by Google)
2. Tried to fetch the those pages, but Google says, page not found.
3. Included them in sitemap, the result is the same. Please advice:
Note: I have recently changed my hosting server.

You're welcome!
-
Everything is perfect now. The pages I mentioned are indexed now. Thank you Monica.
-
Yes rectified the problem. Accidentally our developers had included a php code on the header and we didnt notice. Finally identified and removed them.
BTW, thanks for your suggestion.
-
Hey There
Are you all set? One thing to consider is sometimes browsers see things differently then search crawlers or web crawlers. Try a header checker like http://urivalet.com/ _and make sure to test different user agents _- like Chrome, Googlebot etc. Check the response code for each user agent. Maybe your browser sees a 200 but Googlebot sees a 404.
-
If you are logged into your admin panel, the one for your website, you will see every page most of the time.
Have you no followed those pages? Did you change the URL? If you changed the URL without redirecting the old URL you will get a 404 error. Make sure that when you changed your hosting solution that the URL structure didn't change for some reason.

I am very sure that, the page "A" is working perfectly.
Sure, Let me try Screaming frog crawl and keep you posted on the result.
BTW, thank you so much for your time and response as well.
-
Screaming frog crawls your site "live" Moz & Google don't so it should show you any current 404 errors. the 404 is showing because the page is not there, you would 301 a 404 page to change it from a 404 to a 200 code.
IN short a 301 is to make it so a user lands on the page and rather than find nothing they find something.
Are you sure Page "A" is working and are you sure its page A that's the problem not something odd like page "A.php" etc. ?
Run screaming frog and see if that helps with finding 404's

Hello Pixel,
Thank you for the response. My question is, when the pages are working, why do you want me to go with either 301 or other options. I am very sure that the page are working. After changing the hosting service only I am into this problem.
For ex: I have a page named "A". And this page is working perfectly when I tried to access it. And the same file is found on the server as well. But the tools are saying the page not found. What could be the reason.
Thank you.

You can use Screaming frog to find the 404 pages, from there you can either 301 them into the correct pages or a very similar page to help prevent the issue. You should also create a soft 404 page this is a page that shows a message like "opps we can't find your page" and then directs users (and bots) to a similar page or a homepage so its not such a dead end.
I'm a bit confused as what you mean by "what to do" You can either fix them by putting content on them or 301 them to the correct page.
Hope that helps.

Google Update
My rank has dropped quite a lot this past week and I can see from the Moz tools that there is an unconfirmed Google update responsible. Is there any information from Moz on this?

Productontology URLs are 404 erroring, are there alternatives to denote new schema categories?
Our team QA specialist recently noticing that the class identifier URLs via productontology are 404ing out saying that the "There is no Wikipedia article for (particular property)". They are even 404ing for productontology URLs that are examples on the productontology.com website! Example: http://www.productontology.org/id/Apple The 404 page says that the wiki entry for "Apple" doesn't exist (lol) Does anybody know what is going on with this website? This service was extremely helpful for creating additionalType categories for schema categories that don't exist on schema.org. Are there any alternatives to productontology now that these class identifier URLs are 404ing? Thanks

Google is not honoring my descriptions
I finally got our title tags honored and now Google is just making the descriptions whatever it wants. This is happening on pretty much every one of our pages. An example: http://www.sqlsentry.com/products/plan-explorer/sql-server-query-view SERPS = SQL Server MVP Aaron Bertrand shares a demo kit for Plan Explorer to give you better insight into the advantages of the tool, and to help you share its virtues ... Description tag = SQL Sentry Plan Explorer is a free query plan analysis tool that will allow you to find the most expensive operators by CPU, I/O, or both. I can see the description tag when I view source so I know that it is pulling it from the table correctly. What can I do to fix this?

Homepage not ranking in Google AU, but ranking in Google UK?
Hey everyone, My homepage has not been ranking for it's primary keyword in Google Australia for many months now. Yesterday when I was using a UK Proxy and searching via Google UK I found my homepage/primary keyword ranked on page 8 in the UK. Now in Australia my website ranks on page 6 but it's for other pages on my website (and it always changes from different page to page). Previously my page was popping up at the bottom of page 1 and page 2. I've been trying many things and waiting weeks to see if it had any impact for over 4 months but I'm pretty lost for ideas now. Especially after what I saw yesterday in Google UK. I'd be very grateful if someone has had the same experience of suggestions and what I should try doing. I did a small audit on my page and because the site is focused on one product and features the primary keyword I took steps to try and fix the issue. I did the following: I noticed the developer had added H1 tags to many places on the homepage so I removed them all to make sure I wasn't getting an over optimization penalty. Cleaned up some of my links because I was not sure if this was the issue (I've never had a warning within Google webmaster tools) Changed the title tags/h tags on secondary pages not to feature the primary keyword as much Made some pages 'noindex' to try and see if this would take away the emphases on the secondary pages Resubmitted by XML sitemaps to Google Just recently claimed a local listings place in Google (still need to verify) and fixed up citations of my address/phone numbers etc (However it's not a local business - sells Australia wide) Added some new backlinks from AU sites (only a handful though) The only other option I can think of is to replace the name of the product on secondary pages to a different appreciation to make sure that the keyword isn't featured there. Some other notes on the site: When site do a 'site:url' search my homepage comes up at the top The site sometimes ranked for a secondary keyword on the front page in specific locations in Australia (but goes to a localised City page). I've noindexed these as a test to see if something with localisation is messing it around. I do have links from AU but I do have links from .com and wherever else. Any tips, advice, would be fantastic. Thanks

Google Fetch Issue
I'm having some problems with what google is fetching and what it isn't, and I'd like to know why. For example, google IS fetching a non-existent page but listing it as an error: http://www.gaport.com/carports but the actual url is http://www.gaport.com/carports.htm. Google is NOT able to fetch http://www.gaport.com/aluminum/storage-buildings-10x12.htm. It says the page doesn't exist (even though it does) and when I click on the not found link in Google fetch it adds %E@%80%8E to the url causing the problem. One theory we have is that this may be some sort of server/hosting problem, but that's only really because we can't figure out what we could have done to cause it. Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and Happy Holidays! Ruben

Google places keyword variations
Hi all, I have a site that is ranking #1 in Google Places for its main <city><keyword>search... but it does not rank for any of its basic keyword variations, which I find very confusing.</keyword></city> ie (just an example) Chicago Caterer (ranked #1 in google places)
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | x2264983x
Chicago Caterers (not ranked in google places)
Chicago Catering (not ranked in google places)
Chicago Catering Company (not ranked in google places)
Chicago Catering Companies (etc..) How can I secure a google places ranking for these simple keyword variations? Do I build links to the google plus page using that anchor text? Do I get citations that contain that keyword somewhere on the page? Do I optimize for these keyword variations on the actual website itself? (not the places listing). Obviously I don't stuff these keywords into the google places listing. Any help would be much appreciated!0
