Is it safe to link my websites together?

Hi Everyone,
I have 10 websites which are all of good standing and related. My visitors would benefit of knowing about the other websites but I don't want to trigger a google penalty by linking them all together. Ideally I'd also like to pass on importance through the links as well. How would you proceed in this situation?
Advice would be greatly appreciated,

If the pages that link to other pages are related, in the "OMG Bro, I can't believe just how topically related these pages are!", kind of way... then I'm sure you'll be alright.
Edited bit: If everything is under the same IP under the same registrant, than I'm somewhat sure the links will be discounted for the purpose of link juice/page rank. However, if you're funneling people to the good stuff, who cares?
The sites might not rank any higher, but if the sites are good in the first place, you may increase revenue across sites. Or you may decrease revenues. You kind of have to experiment with that sort of thing.

If each of the 10 websites are able to stand on their own, I think a strategy of slowly linking a few together might work, but I would be cautious.
I would avoid having each of the 10 websites link to each other. That's probably where you'll get into the most amount of trouble.
Instead, draw a diagram with the Websites that visitors would feel are the most similar. And test and watch the traffic. If you see a high bounce rate from one site to the other, you might want to reconsider.
I'd also evaluate if the sites that you are linking together are hosted at the same location, with the same C block of IP addresses. If so, that could raise a virtual eyebrow or two with an algorithm.
You might want to go with a strategy like this, where site 1 links to sites 2, 3 and 4:

Should I have multiple websites for my different brands or one main website with different tabs/areas?
My client creates apps. As well as the apps they create themselves, they have made some of their own that cover various different topics. Currently they have individual websites for each of these apps, and a website for their app making business. They are asking whether they should just have one website - their app building site, which also includes information about the two apps they've built themselves. My feeling is it's better to keep them separate. The app building site is trying to appeal to a B2B audience and gain business to build new apps. AppA is trying to help carehomes and carers to streamline their business, and AppB is trying to help workplace and employee welfare. Combining them all will mean lots of mixed messaging/keywords even if we have dedicated areas on the site. I also think it will limit how much content we can create on each without being completely overwhelming for the user. If we keep them all separate then we can have a very clear user journey. I would of course recommend having blog posts or some sort of landing page to link to AppA and AppB's websites. Thoughts? Thank you!

API to power all websites
I spoke to one of my lead web developers and we are planning on powering all of our desktop, mobile and tablet sites with our new API. Everything will be populated through javascript and is cloud-based rather than through actual HTML. How do we incorporate all of our SEO?

Is cross-linking websites bad? What is your experience?
Today, I was watching video about Is cross-linking websites bad? on Google Webmaster YouTube channel. I've big confusion on this subject because, I have made big changes on this factor. I have removed my website link from two websites. Both websites are top to link my website. But, I have removed it due to certain issue. I have hyperlink following page with Patio Umbrellas keyword. http://www.vistastores.com/patio-umbrellas I know that, I have to maintain my inbound link statistics and that's why I'm going to add my website link with Patio Umbrellas text link to my clients' websites. I have already added it to certain clients' websites and going to add in another clients' websites. Dynamic Links vs Static Links
There are under 100 pages that we are trying to rank for and we'd like to flatten our site architecture to give them more link juice. One of the methods that is currently in place now is a widget that dynamically links to these pages based on page popularity...the list of links could change day to day. We are thinking of redesigning the page to become more static, as we believe it's better for link juice to flow to those pages reliably than dynamically. Before we do so, we need a second opinion.

How should I handle these links?
I recently purchased a site which is in the same niche as my personal blog. MANY of the keywords which I want both sites to rank for, they are already ranking well for (Eg I rank #1 with one site and #5 for the other). I haven't started linking the two sites to each other yet (waiting to announce the acquisition before I do). I have 2 questions for you all... How powerful do you think linking between these sites could be? How do you think I should handle the linking between these two sites?

First Link Priority question - image/logo in header links to homepage
I have not found a clear answer to this particular aspect of the "first link priority" discussion, so wanted to ask here. Noble Samurai (makers of Market Samurai seo software) just posted a video discussing this topic and referencing specifically a use case example where when you disable all the css and view the page the way google sees it, many times companies use an image/logo in their header which links to their homepage. In my case, if you visit our site you can see the logo linking back to the homepage, which is present on every page within the site. When you disable the styling and view the site in a linear path, the logo is the first link. I'd love for our first link to our homepage include a primary keyword phrase anchor text. Noble Samurai (presumably seo experts) posted a video explaining this specifically http://www.noblesamurai.com/blog/market-samurai/website-optimization-first-link-priority-2306 and their suggested code implementations to "fix" it http://www.noblesamurai.com/first-link-priority-templates which use CSS and/or javascript to alter the way it is presented to the spiders. My web developer referred me to google's webmaster central: http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?answer=66353 where they seem to indicate that this would be attempting to hide text / links. Is this a good or bad thing to do?
