404 Pages. Can I change it to do this without getting penalized ? I want to lower our bounce rate from these pages to encourage the user to continue on the site
-
Hi All,
We have been streaming our site and got rid of thousands of pages for redundant locations (Basically these used to be virtual locations where we didn't have a depot although we did deliver there and most of them was duplicate/thin content etc ). Most of them have little if any link value and I didn't want to 301 all of them as we already have quite a few 301's already
We currently display a 404 page but I want to improve on this. Current 404 page is - http://goo.gl/rFRNMt
I can get my developer to change it, so it will still be a 404 page but the user will see the relevant category page instead ?
So it will look like this - http://goo.gl/Rc8YP8 . We could also use Java script to show the location name etc...
Would be be okay ? or would google see this as cheating.
basically I want to lower our bounce rates from these pages but still be attractive enough for the user to continue in the site and not go away. If this is not a good idea, then any recommendations on improving our current 404 would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
Pete

Many thanks both
I previously had locations in these places but now we don't hence the 404's.
thanks

There's no law that says a 404 page has to be dull and unengaging. Back in the palaeolithic era of the web if we saw a lot of hits to the 404 page in the server logs we rarely knew why (finding broken links was a lot harder in those days) so we tried to capitalize and added engaging graphics and search boxes, copy designed to improve the retention of all these poor lost souls.
Working on your 404 page can actually be a really good experience. With the tools at developers disposal today it should be super easy to work out the context of the 404 error and show something useful to the user and win them over.
All that said if you find yourself relying on this technique in 2014 it is probably a sign something has gone wrong with the site's information architecture. Restoring the category page but serving a 404 is probably a no-no - you're essentially saying "no, this doesn't exist" to automatons (user agents and search crawlers) but you are showing the user the page they were presumably looking for. Finding yourself in a situation where you are sending deceitful HTTP headers is a clear sign something is wrong.
If the pages are useful and visited, restore them and work on making them better. If they aren't useful enough then you should probably 301 to a relevant useful page. Don't worry about having too many 301s, redirecting is the technically correct thing to do in such situations and your search engine of choice can hardly penalize you for using HTTP features correctly.

Just curious…
How would you get the 404 page content to reflect the category related to the search?
-
I can't see a problem with changing it. Seeing that you removed a lot of pages due to cleaning up the site i would think that the normal thing to do is not to show a 404-page, but either redirect to the proper page/category, or show something like the example you linked to.

External 404 pages
A client of mine is linking to a third-party vendor from their main site. The page being linked to loads with a Page Not Found error and then replaces some application content once the Javascript kicks in. This process is not visible to users (the application loads fine for front-end users) but it is being picked up as a 404 error in broken link reports. This link is part of the site skin so it's on every page. Outside of the annoyance of having lots of 404 errors being flagged in a broken link report, does this cause any actual issue? Eg, do search enginges see that my client is linking to something that is a 404 error, and does that cause them any harm?

How much change should you make to your site in one go?
Hey everyone, So we are currently working on a new website and are in the final stages right now. We have some plans for a brand name change too and there is some debate internally whether we should: a) roll out the new site now and hold off on the rebrand - let the redirects kick in and the site bed in so to speak. Then when the dust settles look at a domain name change b) Roll out the new site with the domain name change too - an all in change A bit of background on the changes being made: The new website will have some structural changes but the main blog content will remain the same - this is where we get the majority of our traffic. The blog will have a slight page layout change but the core content, structure, urls, etc. will be exactly the same. The core website surrounding the blog will change with 301 redirects from old out of date content pages consolidated to fewer, more relevant pages. I hope I've explained enough here, if not please let me know and I'll add more detail

How to get a page re-crawed quickly
Does anyone know a way to get Google to re-crawl a webpage that does not belong to me. There are a bunch of pages that I have had links removed on and I want Google to re-crawl those pages to see the links have been removed. (current wait time is way way too long) Can anyone suggest some ways to get the page re-crawled. (I am unable to get the website owners to use WMT to do anything). Suggestions like good ping services and various other techniques would be very much appreciated. Thanks

Does Google make continued attempts to crawl an old page one it has followed a 301 to the new page?
I am curious about this for a couple of reasons. We have all dealt with a site who switched platforms and didn't plan properly and now have 1,000's of crawl errors. Many of the developers I have talked to have stated very clearly that the HTacccess file should not be used for 1,000's of singe redirects. I figured If I only needed them in their temporarily it wouldn't be an issue. I am curious if once Google follows a 301 from an old page to a new page, will they stop crawling the old page?

Advice on Getting this site ranking?
Hi there I'm looking to optimise this site for SEO -> Gets about 3,000 visits per day but all from branded searches. Gets virtually no 'keyword searches' It's just a landing page at the moment. Would you recommend I integrate a blog with it, so we can start targeting more long tail keywords (free football game etc) Any thoughts/advice appreciated 🙂 Thanks Howard

Has anyone found a way to get site links in the SERPs?
I am wanting to get some site links in the serps to increase the size of my "space", has anyone found a way of getting them? I know google says that its automatic and only generated if they feel it would benifit browsers but there must be a rule of thumb to follow. I was thinking down the line of a tight catagorical system that is implimented throughout the site that is clearly related to the content (how it should be I guess)... Any comments, suggestions welcome
