Hi there, there's a few things to bear in mind here.
First - Domain Authority ISN'T a part of Google Algorithm. I'm assuming you're using Moz's DA, there's an article here explaining how DA is a way to try to PREDICT rankings but it does not AFFECT rankings:
https://moz.com/learn/seo/domain-authority
So in terms of seeing a drop in your DA, I wouldn't worry that your rankings are likely to drop as a result. It's just as likely that Moz has updated the number to more accurately reflect what was always the truth.
In terms of improving rankings, you mention a specific target keyword. In my experience, the steps to take to make sure you're ranking for a keyword are:
- Make sure your site ranks for anything (is indexed)
- Make sure you have a page specifically targeting the keyword
- Make sure you don't have LOTS of pages targeting that keyword (if you have pages competing for the same keyword it can confuse Google and harm your rankings overall, tools like Stat are a great way to check that)
- If the keyword is important enough, consider targeting it with the homepage and only the homepage
- Make sure your site doesn't have weird technical issues
- Once you've covered EVERYTHING else, then worry about DA.
The reason I order the steps that way is to focus on the things you can most easily change and most quickly see the results of. Changing Google's perceived authority of your site is actually quite hard to do, very hard to reliably measure, and often not the main factor at play.
Just in case you were hoping posts to Moz would help impact authority - links posted to this forum are automatically nofollowed to avoid people trying to manipulate rankings by posting links. That's quite common for forums and is just one of the ways the modern internet is quite resistant to link building

Purchasing an existing domain + redirecting to company's domain
Let's pretend that competitor.com ranks well for certain search terms and generates some traffic from organic search. If a company were to acquire the competitor (or their domain), what's the smartest way to redirect that SEO value to the acquiring company's website? Does a 301 redirect work between different root domains? Even if it does work, is that the smartest approach? Thanks for your help!

301 old site to new site?
I have client with an old site - www.bestfamilylawattorney.com - which had a lot of spammy links (and bad rankings). Instead of fixing those issues, we started a new URL - www.berenjifamilylaw.com - with new content and redesign. Should I do a 301 redirect from old to new domain? If the old site was being penalized, would a 301 transfer that penalty? I just want to make sure I don't end up hurting the new site after doing all the work to start fresh. Thanks.

New site causes massive drop off in ranking, old site restored how long to recover?
Hello, We launched and updated version of our site, mainly design changes and some functionality. 3 days after the launch we vanished from the rankings, previous page one results were now out of the top 100. We have identified some of the issues with the new site and chose to restore the old well ranking site. My question is how long might it take for the ranking to come back, if at all? The drop happened on the third day and the site was restored on the third day. We are now on day 6. Using GWT with have used fetch as Google and resubmitted the site map. Any help would be gladly received. Thanks James

Site's disappearnce in web rankings
I'm currently doing some work on a website: http://www.abetterdriveway.com.au. Upon starting, I detected a lot of spammy links going to this website and sort to remove them before submitting a disavow report. A few months later, this site completely disappeared in the rankings, with all keywords suddenly not ranked. I realised that the test website (which was put up to view before the new site went live) was still up on another URL and Google was suddenly ranking that site instead. Hence, I ensured that test site was completely removed. 3 weeks later however, the site (www.abetterdriveway.com.au) still remains unranked for its keywords. Upon checking Web Master Tools, I cannot see anything that stands out. There is no manual action or crawling issues that I can detect. Would anyone know the reason for this persistent disappearance? Is it something I will just have to wait out until ranking results come back, or is there something I am missing? Help here would be much appreciated.

A website was built and launched eight months ago, and their domain authority is 1. When a site has been live for a while and has such a low DA, what's causing it?

Changing domain extension to detoxify a domain
Hi there, A linkbuilding company that has been building links for us has not gained any sustained results. They have advised that our domain may be toxic, and that we should consider permanent redirecting from .co.uk to another domain extension in order to remedy this. Is this a recommendation worth considering?
