Moving to https - Webmaster Tools
-
Okay so I've moved a site I work on to https finally... wasn't easy, but I won't go into the whys and hows of that.
Everything is working fine on the site and my rankings are holding steady but when I went into the GWT today I noticed that my main site (www.domain.com) has lost inquiry and traffic data almost entirely.
So I quickly added and verified the https://www.domain.com URL (even though it doesn't ask for the protocol when adding a site) and saw the traffic.. kind of. Only 2 inquiries and a few pages indexed.
Now I realize I need to submit a new sitemap and am currently working on that but don't know which account to upload it to. Do I really need two GWT sites separately and why is the other one still getting the impressions and clicks?
Basically I'm looking for somebody to shed some light on how to handle this migration from a GWT standpoint. I've attached 3 screenshots to illustrate what I'm talking about. Should be obvious what's what to those who read this post.
The Analytics shot is to show that I haven't actually lost traffic in this time and eliminate the fear of penalty or anything of the sort.
Thanks!

I just converted a site to HTTPS as well. The easiest thing for me to do was create a new property altogether. The change of address process takes forever and is a pain in the butt all the way around. I had no issues creating a new property. As all of the 301 redirects start working, the old site will begin to "disappear".

Google Webmaster Tools has a blog post about this very subject:_"In order to see your data correctly, you will need to verify all existing variants of your site (www., non-www., HTTPS, subdirectories, subdomains) in Google Webmaster Tools. We recommend that your preferred domains and canonical URLs are configured accordingly.__Note that if you wish to submit a Sitemap, you will need to do so for the preferred variant of your website, using the corresponding URLs. Robots.txt files are also read separately for each protocol and hostname." _So:
- Add all 4 existing variants as Fede and GWT guys mentioned above.. and as have you have done already..
- .. but also: set your preferred domain to be https://www..
- .. and finally: don't forget to set your canonical URL-s to be https://www.. on all pages
**My solution if the above doesn't work: thinking out of the box — have you connected the the preferred domain, https://www... with your Google Analytics property for the https://.. site? **
What Google writes in their official documentation seems to imply that your GA and GWT site share information between each other. Among other things, for search queries. Now for that to happen successfully both of them must establish in their algorithms what is the real preferred domain / site where the queries go right? Maybe that will force GWT to work.
Reference: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1120006?hl=en
Final risky way too force GWT to track your preferred domain (at least the main page and it's direct descendants of your site):
- 301 redirect all your http:// to https:// See for example with htaccess, if you are running Apache and not Nginx: https://sites.google.com/site/onlyvalidation/page/301-redirect-https-to-http-on-apache-server
- For your http://.. site in Google Webmaster Tools user interface under "Crawl" go to "Fetch as Google". Leave the URL field blank to fetch your main index or homepage and click on Fetch for it to fetch for http://.. main index.
- After it has fetched your http:// homepage and displayed an icon with the word "Redirected" — you can click on the "Submit to Index" button that appears next to the "Redirected" sign and from there choose "Crawl this URL and it's direct descendants" — that may result in Google Webmaster Tools knowing that you really want your preferred domain to be tracked.
I offer this solution only as a thought experiment and because it seems you have replaced your http:// site completely with the https:// version.

When you make the switch and "unplug the plug" from the new site to plug it in the new site, they are basically different sites to Google, so you need a new GWT site for the https version (you also need the www and non-www. versions, and wouldn't hurt to have both for both https and http.
What you are seeing now, is Google reindexing your content. Totally normal. It takes a while while Google removed all your HTTP pages and add the HTTPS pages to their index, there's nothing you need to worry about.
Do the other variant verifications and submit a new sitemap with the HTTPS pages to the version that is now being indexed.
I did about 7 switches so far and all went well with exactly the same pattern. Impressions start dropping on the HTTP while increasing in HTTPS (takes longer to start showing numbers in the HTTPS than what it takes for the HTTP to lower those).
Hope that helps!

Will changing the property from http to https in Google Analytics affect main unfiltered view?
I set my client up with an unfiltered view in Google Analytics. This is the one with historical data going back for years, so I don't want to do anything that will affect this view. Recently, the website moved from HTTP to HTTPS. There's a setting for the property that will allow me to change the property name to https://EXAMPLE.com and change the default URL to https://EXAMPLE.com. Questions: 1. If I change the property name and the default URL, will this somehow affect my unfiltered view in a way that I'll lose historical data or data moving forward? 2. I have heard that changing the default URL to HTTPS will help me avoid a common problem others have experienced (where they lose the referrer in Google Analytics and a bunch of their sessions go to direct / other). Is this true?

Backlink Tool Finding Links That Aren't Visible
I'm using a variety of backlink toolsl; OSE, SEM Rush, Link Research Tools and Google Webmaster Tools. On some occasions the tools are telling me there is a link to my site on a certain page, however when I open that page I can't see any mention of my company. I have run all these reports today, so I think it is unlikely that Google is using old data. Does anyone know why this happens and if I should still be concerned about links that I cannot see but backlink tools are telling me are there? Thanks guys.

Is google too volatile to rely on? Should I move to PPC? (screenshots attached)
I've attached 2 analytics screenshots of sites of mine. I can't believe how volatile google has been this year for no apparant reason. The on site of my sites has not changed much throughout the year and I've not spent any serious amount of time on link building after initially building some links when the sites where first launched. As you can see from Screenshot 1 show gradual growth throughout the year but in August google completely killed all traffic from my site. Disheartened I pretty much gave up and didn't spend any time on the site at all. The for no reason in September the site bounced back with more traffic than ever. The second screenshot for another of my sites shows intial growth and the google kills the visits again in April. It's not until June that the site starts to see growth again but after it reaches its peak mid October google kills all traffic again! Does anyone else think that google is far to volatile for any serious business to rely on it for generating customers? I'm considering moving to PPC which is probably the end game for google but early tests show conversion rates are much lower on adwords which I don't really understand as it's essentially the same traffic source. I've been careful to create relevant landing pages for keywords in adwords. Any thoughts greatly appreciated. 3Itysj1.png ijoarzV.png

Is Google turning Off Webmaster Tools Search data
My Webmaster Tools account has stopped showing data past 9/23, which is a full week old. Typically it is just a few days behind schedule. Is Google cutting this off?

Webmaster tools traffic on one keyword dropped through the floor - ideas?
Hi there, We design and sell our own product range in a narrow niche, and we are also stocked by Amazon and a lot of other big retailers in the UK. During the first two weeks of Dec 2012 the position of one of our main keywords, which was in google SERPs on page 1 (8 or 9), dropped to page 4. The keyword describes the niche we're in. The drop is shown in the webmaster tools traffic report for that keyword. But it's the only one of our keywords where this has happened, and furthermore it hasn't happened for variations of the keyword. And in Adwords our quality score for the keyword is 10 For example say we were making and selling shopping trolleys - our keyword "shopping trolleys" has dropped through the floor, but "shopping trolleys (on) wheels" is just fine. Can anyone shed any light on what's going on here? Losing this one keyword has cost us some good organic traffic. i1uxSlB.png

SEOMoz & Google Webmaster Tools crawl error conflicting info
Site im working on has zero crawl errors according to SEOMoz (it did previously have lots since ironed out) but now looking at GWebmaster Tools saying 5000 errors. Date of those are not that recent but Webmaster Tools line graph of errors still showing aprox 5000 up to yesterday There is an option to bulk action/tick them all as fixed so thinking/hoping GWT just keeping a historical record that can now be deleted since no longer applicable. However i'm not confident this is the case since still showing on the line graph. Any ideas re this anomalous info (can i delete and forget in GWT) ? Also side question I take it its not possible to link a GA property with a GWT account if created with different logins/accounts ? Many Thanks Dan

Does prevent links from being included in Google Webmaster linking sites report?
My client has clean links in edit from nytimes.com. The links do not have nofollow tags. Google Webmaster stopped including links from nytimes.com in the external linking domains report and we don't know why since the URL is still live. The nytimes.com URL includes this tag in the source code: Are links on pages with NOARCHIVE still counted in Google Webmaster linking domains reports?

Why are Seemingly Randomly Generated URLs Appearing as Errors in Google Webmaster Tools?
I've been confused by some URLs that are showing up as errors in our GWT account. They seem to just be randomly generated alphanumeric strings that Google is reporting as 404 errors. The pages do 404 because nothing ever existed there or was linked to. Here are some examples that are just off of our root domain: /JEzjLs2wBR0D6wILPy0RCkM/WFRnUK9JrDyRoVCnR8= /MevaBpcKoXnbHJpoTI5P42QPmQpjEPBlYffwY8Mc5I= /YAKM15iU846X/ymikGEPsdq 26PUoIYSwfb8 FBh34= I haven't been able to track down these character strings in any internet index or anywhere in our source code so I have no idea why Google is reporting them. We've been pretty vigilant lately about duplicate content and thin content issues and my concern is that there are an unspecified number of urls like this that Google thinks exist but don't really. Has anyone else seen GWT reporting errors like this for their site? Does anyone have any clue why Google would report them as errors?
