Lots of dublicate titles and pages on search page
-
I own a paiting website with a lot of searchable paintings.
The "search paintings" feature creates tons of dublicate pages and titles.
See here:
http://www.maleribasen.dk/soegmaleri.aspI guess the problem is, that the URL can actually be different and still return the same content.
First time you click the "Search paintings" the URL will shown as above. But as soon as users
begin to definere they search to the left and use the "Search button" the top URL changes. So, depending on how the top URL looks different results are shown. This is pretty standard in searches.
But it returns tons of dublicate pages and titles.
How, do you guys cope with that?
Is there a clever way to use ref="cannonical" or some other smart way to avoid this?
/Kasper

Yes, in an addition to the canonical tag you will need to setup the redirects. But am not sure how you would do that on microsoft server.
-
Ok, can u explain a bit more? I'm a programmer myself, so I might do it myself.
But i'm guessing that i need to install something on webserver to create those urls, and then use a permanent 301 redirect on the old urls to the new ones?
-
Your webmaster should as the tag for you.. your programmer would be able to handle the issue with the friendly URL's but that's a complicated process because they should redirect the old pages to the new...
-
Thanks for your answer. So, what do you recommend? I have access to programmers, so I can make the changes that needs to be done. Just not sure how to do it.
-
Yes you could use a canonical tag for every single page you have (which you have thousands as I discovered).
The other issue that you are facing is that your URL's are not user friendly. If you had some friendly URL's it would be easier for Google to understand your pages.
As for the canonical tag please use a sample as the below:

Schema Mark up - Product Listing Pages
Hi I know you can add product schema to a product page, but can you add mark up to a product listing/category page? If so, which one would you use? I saw the item list mark up but didn't think this was relevant. Thank you

Who else is noticing a shift in deeper pages ranking?
Without mentioning names, we're noticing a shift in many of our clients ranking pages. Previously many of them held page 1 positions with their home page. We've been building brand only anchor text to these pages for some time now and there's a noticeable change in visibility to the domain as a whole displayed in GWT and there's an uplift in organic traffic too. It just happens that some of our clients already had pages in the root directory that were very optimised for the clients' head terms, but all of a sudden, these sub pages with very few inbound links have started ranking in the place of the home pages. I've attached a screenshot of the landing page organic traffic. The pages in question have been there for at least 8-10 months. These inner pages would not normally have been able to hold their ground in this position and I'm concerned that this is a temporary change. I can see this going one of two ways; (i) home page beings to out rank sub page as before, (i) sub page loses ranking ability and home page rank does not come back. My questions to the community are therefore; **Has anyone else noticed this shift in ranking behaviour? ** What are everyone's thoughts on this? - Will it remain this way? From this query I can easily ask another wider question; Good advice across the internet says we should be building strong brand links and citations to our clients' domains. Typically brand links go to the homepage, which should provide the homepage and (to a lesser extent the domain) with a ranking/traffic/visibility uplift. However, as I'm noticing other pages now picking up ranking boosts as a result of this; **Should we still be trying to gain links to these more commercial landing pages? ** How are others building high quality links to pages full of commercial copy? I hope this can spark a little bit of a debate. I look forward to hearing everyone's thoughts. Thanks yPOEjVA.png

Does the Search Algorithm vary considerably locally?
Hey, i am from india and I just noticed that most of our searches are extremely different to those from the gooogle.com searches. Not some searches. I mean entire layouts. For instance, there were no google places in the search results in India. There was hardly any integration with the G+ for a long time after it launched, even though a large population on G+ was Indian. I got thinking on these lines. Any pointers?

How do I rank multiple pages for my busness/domain name?
When someone searches for our business's name (which is also the domain name) we have one listing (with sitelinks) at the top - however I would also like to rank 2nd, 3rd and 4th for this term. Any suggestions on how this might be done? Thanks.

Is it ok to repeat part of a meta-description across multiple pages?
For example, what if I was to conclude each meta-description tag with the line... "Free shipping for orders over $90." The rest of the meta-description tag on every page is unique, but the last sentence would be the same or at least similar. Thoughts?

Has anyone notice their website page rankings in Bing and Yahoo slipping lately?
My websites for the most part rank higher in Yahoo and Bing than in Google. Now, ranking within those search engines (Yahoo/Bing) are settling in to where my websites rank in Google. Any thoughts? Anyone else experiencing this? Thank you for your time!

HTML Not Validating META Title??!!
This seems pretty odd to me. HTML 5 is not validating lots of the typical META content - including, amongst others, the META title. This is typically seen as a standard 'must-have' for many SEOs, including the check-list on SEOmoz. Has anybody else had this issue? And of course, did you find a solution? Thanks, Mark
