Internal 404 Error
-
Hi sorry for the newbie question, I have a few 404 pages on my moz crawl report. so for example this one : http://www.dwliverpoolphotography.co.uk/blog/www.coraclecomm.wordpress.com. How can I find the page that is linking to it so I can fix the link or delete it?
Best wishes.
David.

As an FYI for anyone else reading this as well as your future knowledge - the Broken Link Finder may take a day or two to catalog your whole site based on how many pages, how many links in your theme, etc. So while it may have missed it today, I would bet that after 2-3 days it finds every broken link. I've never found one it missed, especially with the above issue (no http).

thanks guys!
The broken link plug missed one that screaming frog found so I will use both tools in the future.
Best wishes.

Screaming Frog handles this really well. Just do a scan of your site and sort the columns by Status Code. Find the page in question and there is a tab at the bottom for "In Links" that will tell you which pages it is linked from.

Looks like a broken comment link. You are on Wordpress, right? Just install the Broken Links plugin and run through the links it finds. You can fix or delete straight from the plugin.
What happened was someone left you a comment using "www.mydomain.com" instead of "http://www.mydomain.com" - the link then gets messed up.

We´re in trouble with our on site internal link optimization - please help
Dear Moz community, We have made a great mistake. Looking at keyword search volumes somehow Moz showed volumes for two keywords which only differentiate by an '**s (plural) as same. **Now we optimized our internal links (all links have the keyword) for the singular word. Now looking at other search volume estimations from competitors we see, that the plural has 5 times bigger volume. Our issue: If we change some of the category links now to another keyword, we will loose our ranking with the singular word. Correct? If we do not change any of our internal links, we will never rank in top 6 with the keyword. (currently singular is 6 and plural is 15) What would you reccomend?

When trying to sculpt an internal link structure, is there any point in placing text links to top level pages that are already in the main menu?
Does Google recognise a link in the content if there is already a link in the menu? My understanding is that Google only counts the first link it finds.

Whether to open a new window for an internal link
I'm aware of the advice to add internal links between pages and so I always add links as and when appropriate. However, my website builder allows me the option to open the link in a new window or in the originator. I invariably choose the former but don't know if this is best practice. Could anyone advise?

After HTTPS upgrade, should I change all internal links, or a general 301 redirect is better?
I recently upgraded to https. Of course most internal links of my old posts are still http. So I set up a 301 redirect in order to make the old link works. In terms od SEO this is good or it is better to update all the internal links to https, manually? In that case can I do it in batch with a search/replace command in the phmyadmin database? any other suggested method? thank you

Understanding why our new page doesn't rank. Internal link structure to blame? + understand canonical pages more.
Hi guys. Sorry it's an essay...BUT, i think a lot of you will find this an interesting question. This question is in 2 (related) parts, and I imagine it would be an 'advanced' SEO question. Hoping you guys can help bring some real insight 🙂 Always amazed at the quality for this forum/ community. **Context... ** We had a duplicate content issue caused by this page and it's product permutations, so we placed canonical tags on all the product permutations to solve it. Worked a treat. However, we now have more **product ranges. **We now sell Diaries, Notebooks & Music books, which are clearly different from one another. So...we've placed canonical tags on all the product permutations leading back to the 'parent' theme. In other words, all the diary permutations 'lead back' to the diary page. All the notebooks permutations 'lead back' to the main notebook page. So on and so forth. Make sense so far? Context end..... Issue. Amazingly our Diary page outranks our notebook pagefor the search term 'Design your own Notebook'. The notebook page is well optimised for this search term, and the diary page avoids the word 'notebook' altogether (so no keyword cannibalisation going on). Possible reason? Our Diary page has a vast amount of internal links to it throughout our site. The notebook page has only a few. Could this be the issue? If so, what reading/ blogs/ content/ tools would you recommend to help understand and solve this problem? i.e) Better understanding internal link structure for SEO. 2nd part of the question (in the context of internal linking for SEO). When there are internal links to a page with a conical tag does that 'count' towards the 'parent page', or simply towards that specific page? I really hope that makes sense. If it's clear as mud just shout. Isaac. EDIT: All pages in question have been indexed since we added these changes to the site.
