Remove Old Poor Quality Links Proactively?
-
I'm working with an ecommerce site where various predecessors have created 5 Wordpress.com blogs containing 5 links on each back to the site. Should I disavow those links and take down those sites if I can get access?
Should I close a second YouTube channel and Google Plus account under another name set up to create links back to the site?
No penalties yet.
Advice much appreciated.

Great advice. Thank you very much for helping me think this through.

Oh that does make a significant difference - yes, in that case I think it might be best to take them down, especially if they 404. I was operating on the assumption there was originality in the blogs.
With copied content there is no penalty but you are not gaining the benefits that original content would provide you. This may change in the future as algorithms are altered but for now there is no penalization for copy/pasting content like that. I have an ecommerce client that previously used this strategy and it didn't "hurt" them, per-say. However, when we adjusted with updated, original content, their rankings jumped considerably.
If you have control of/access to these blogs, it still might be more useful to your cause to update with new content and build up the links' authority. However, if you do not want to put the time and effort into creating a legitimate fix on the issue, then disavowing is probably a better option - just as long as you are aware that you are likely to suffer some short-term ranking drops.
In order of preference, I would say:
- Build up blogs to create relevance
- Disavow links
- Ignore problem
You might also take a middle route and disavow broken/404 links and continue with others - in the grand scheme of things if your link profile is generally strong, this shouldn't hurt you too much either way.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments. Let me clarify. Each piece of "content" is single product photo and copied product descriptios. Products may even be out of stock so links may 404. Could links like this hurt, as they are so blatantly linking strategies? Is there any reason to keep these sites? Just ignore ? Or disavow?

Hello Peg,
For best results, here is what I would do:
- Retain Wordpress.com blogs and build them up with new content to generate further links and traffic - closing them will only hurt you unless the links or content are poor quality and likely to be penalized in the near future. If you are on a large budget, try boosting them simultaneously. If not, try working on one at a time per month until they are each built up. This will help you more than disavowing them, which will land you back at square one.
If they are producing traffic and are quality content/link producers, keep them.
- Close one of the YouTube accounts unless both are generating fair amounts of traffic. Consider the value of a YouTube channel and if only one (or neither) are generating any value, then you only need one active. The same goes for the Google+ Accounts - if both are successful in generating leads/clients, then keep them (there is no penalty associated as long as they are under separate names). If only one is successful, remove the other. If neither is successful, then remove either one.
This isn't too big of a deal - there won't be huge penalties either way. However, you do stand to gain if you build on the previous work, assuming it was well-conceived and structured.
Hope this helps!

We had a blog that has been inactive since 2011\. Now since the website is redesigned and we are working on link building, is it advisable to use the old blog content in the new blog?
The content of the old blog belongs to the company, hence no issues of copied content. The options I have are: 1. Use old content as is 2. Re-use old content in more interesting format i.e use info-graphics and the likes 3. Do not use any of the old content. Create new content

Any benefits to having Wikipedia links now they are 'no-followed' (apart from traffic and natural link prof.)
I see that Wikipedia outbound links are all no-followed, is there any benefit (aside from the traffic) for having links here now ? For example is their co-citation and co-occurance benefits. I know there is without the links since from seeing previous Moz content about this saying Google getting good at connecting brand/s and topic mentions on a page (without any links) so appreciate Wikipedia is still good for that sort of thing. And a no-followed link is obviously good for the potential traffic. But is there any additional SEO benefit to having a no followed link on a wikipedia entry/stub too ? (aside from its contribution to your no-followed links which in turn contribute to a natural looking link profile) Cheers Dan

How can I check were are the no-follow links on my site? I have found some tool online but it shows me that there are only 2 no-follow links on my website which are both www.cloudflare.com while SEOmoz report shows me that I have 1031...where can i view this links?

Link exchanges
I have quite a few legal clients and 90% of my clients top competitors are doing 1:1 link exchanges and they have been doing it for years. Other industries Dont seem as prevalent. I am just boggled every time someone says link exchanges don't work, will get penalized, or value is not passed. Its been working for my competitors....Legal SEO's seem to focus heavily on link exchanges. I have yet to do link exchanges, but am about to get started with a resourceful directory of local businesses on my clients site. Some will be linking back, but not all. Fear of penalization is lurking in my mind. Does anyone have any real data on this? Does anyone have an example of doing this properly and an example of how not to do it? I appreciate any feedback you can give. Thank you,

Internal Linking - 100 plus links
Hi Everyone, I have a question of how the on-page links are being counted. Say you have a page with a warning of having too many on page links (100+). How are all of these links counted? Let's say there are only 5 links on that page. Do the links on each of those pages count too and so on and so forth? I just want to make sure I have wrapped my head around this correctly. Thanks!

Link building
I have two separate websites on different servers and was wondering that since reciprocal links effectively eliminate each other, I'm curious if this link strategy will keep the links counting. Here's the strategy: I will have someone link to my site A and if i link to their site from my site B in a three way link strategy, will the links count even though both my site A and B have me listed as the Whois so Google knows that both sites are owned by me? Or will the links be discounted as reciprocal? Thanks in advance for your feedback! Take care, Ron

Links on the same keyword
When is linking from one particular keyword to much. At what point could link building from one keyword be considered spam and potentially delist a site ? Is it possible for a site to be delisted for having to many links from the same keyword ? Heard linking from the website name is more important following recent changes. I try and link from a selection of 3 to 4 keywords. Thanks for your help
