How to provide value when clients slow at executing
-
Hi guys,
Been working at a large media agency for the last couple of years, on quite big brands doing their SEO_._
Its getting to the point where i'm becoming frustrated by the lack of action taken by my clients in executing simple things like - basic 301 redirects, creating new content/pages, improving existing content, implementing basic meta descriptions, push back against CRO, etc. It can take 6+ months to a couple years for them to implement our recommendations.
I literally feel like my role has become simply reporting on a monthly basis or doing audits (content, technical, etc) which i know won't even get implemented.
I love getting result and providing value. But unfortunately its difficult and SEO becomes uninspiring when clients are slow at executing.
I was wondering if anyone has similar experiences, or suggestions.
Cheers.

Hello Mike,
This is definitely a situation where proper analytics and consistent reporting that show losses when changes are not implemented (and gains made when they are) is necessary. If you can prove that slow action (or inaction) on their part is hurting their bottom line, then they will be spurred to make the necessary changes. It can be a challenge to maintain willpower and work ethic when you know that small changes on the part of your client will make discernible differences to their success.
I have a client that followed this same pattern - small alterations such as additional content or meta tags were multi-month endeavors. The action we took was a combination of the ideas offered by Martijn and EGOL - we began by making monthly analytics reports for 3-month periods showing the cost of inefficiency (noting changes and the average amount of time they took compared with revenue figures before/after said changes were made). After 3 months, we made the alterations ourselves at no cost to see what kind of difference it made. Within 2 months of the changes we made, their bottom line had increased by 18% when compared to their average monthly earnings.
When we showed them this, we made the argument that we could be responsible for their ongoing updates (for a fee) and they were happy to move ahead with that system. 2 years later and we still have a great working relationship with them. As marketers and SEO's, it is our job to lead our clients to revenue, even if they don't understand how it works or place little value on it. We have to provide value and get their buy-in. After that, we can take on more challenging (and inspiring) projects to keep ourselves entertained.
Hopefully this gives you some ideas for moving forward. Keep plugging away and feel free to fire any questions you have my way.
Best regards,
Rob

Jobs like these might go undone for many reasons.... lack of time... other pressing work... lack of skill... IT guys are cranky... afraid of making errors.... forgetfulness..... somebody on the staff nixing your work. So, offer to do these jobs for them, charging a fee, of course.
Tell them that you will implement immediately so that they get the full time value of your recommendations done correctly. Explain the loss of potential revenue by not getting the improvements on the site right away.
They might be very happy to get this work done quickly. I would pay extra for implementation.

But are you also reporting on the results that certain SEO changes have an impact on? Otherwise it will never be clear what the changes of anything will result on the bottom line. I'm an SEO, moving a bit more to general online marketing though, and love talking about all these geeky SEO things and implementations but as long as I can't even prove for myself that it will influence the bottom line why would I pick these things up. It's same working for bigger companies, they don't care about links and domain authorities probably but revenue and more visitors.

Value of EDU Links?
Greetings: We are considering hiring a firm specializes in developing .EDU links. Is the ROI on EDU links better than non EDU backlinks from reputable domains? Will obtaining EDU links results in greater domain authority and improved ranking for search engine results? Thanks, Alan

Building a product clients will integrate into their sites: What is the best way to utilize my clients' unique domain names?
I'm designing a hosted product my clients will integrate into their websites, their end users would access it via my clients' customer-facing websites. It is a product my clients pay for which provides a service to their end users, who would have to login to my product via a link provided by my clients. Most clients would choose to incorporate this link prominently on their home page and site nav.

All clients will be in the same vertical market, so their sites will be keyword rich and related to my site.
Many may even be .org and ,edus The way I see it, there are three main ways I could set this up within the product.
I want to know which is most beneficial, or if I'm missing anything. 1: They set up a subdomain at their domain that serves content from my domain product.theirdomain.com would render content from mydomain.com's database.
product.theirdomain.com could have footer and/or other no-follow links to mydomain.com with target keywords The risk I see here is having hundreds of sites with the same target keyword linking back to my domain.
This may be the worst option, as I'm not sure about if the nofollow will help, because I know Google considers this kind of link to be a link scheme: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/66356?hl=en 2: They link to a subdomain on mydomain.com from their nav/site
Their nav would include an actual link to product.mydomain.com/theircompanyname
Each client would have a different "theircompanyname" link.
They would decide and/or create their link method (graphic, presence of alt tag, text, what text, etc).
I would have no control aside from requiring them to link to that url on my server. 3: They link to a subdirectory on mydomain.com from their nav/site
Their nav would include an actual link to mydomain.com/product/theircompanyname
Each client would have a different "theircompanyname" link.
They would decide and/or create their link method (graphic, presence of alt tag, text, what text, etc).
I would have no control aside from requiring them to link to that url on my server. In all scenarios, my marketing content would be set up around mydomain.com both as static content and a blog directory, all with SEO attractive url slugs. I'm leaning towards option 3, but would like input!0 -
What is the value of Google Crawling Dynamic URLS with NO SEO
Hi All I am Working on travel site for client where there are 1000's of product listing pages that are dynamically created. These pages are not SEO optimised and are just lists of products with no content other than the product details. There are no meta tags for title and description on the listings pages. You then click Find Out more to go to the full product details. There is no way to SEO these Dynamic pages This main product details has no content other than details and now meta tags. To help increase my google rankings for the rest of the site which is search optimised would it be better to block google from indexing these pages. Are these pages hurting my ability to improve rankings if my SEO of the content pages has been done to a good level with good unique Titles, descriptions and useful content thanks In advance John

Client has been COPYING blog posts to wordpress.com for years. Now what?
Just discovered my client has been copying all her blog posts over to her wordpress.com blog account. So she has duplicate content to what is on her site. She has roughly 700 posts on her main site but doesn't look like that many on the wordpress site. There are no inbound links coming off the wordpress site that I could find. Here's an example: http://thevanillaqueen.wordpress.com/2013/01/30/is-canola-oil-a-healthy-choice/ http://vanilla.com/is-canola-oil-a-healthy-choice/ What are you recommendations for what should be done? Thanks!

Can Someone Provide an Example of a Site that Indexes Search Results Successfully?
So, I know indexing search results is a big no-no, but I recently started working with a site that sees 50% of its traffic from search result pages. The user engagement on these pages is very high, and these pages rank well too. Unfortunately, they've been hit by Panda. They already moved the section of the site with search results to a subdomain, and saw temporary success. There must be a way to preserve their traffic from these search result pages and get out from under Panda.
