Can Anyone show me a site that has followed the seomoz seo rules
-
Hi i have been reading the seo information on here which is very interesting and i would like to know if anyone can point to any sites that have followed the rules and advice.
It is great when you can read the info and rules but i feel it is also better to see a site that has followed the rules and to hear from people who have followed the information and put them into practice and explain what results they have got.
I am currently building the following website http://www.womenlifestylemagazine.com
so it would be great to see a site that has followed all the rules and who can explain if they work or not.
-
I am not sure that it helps rankings yet, but it cannot hurt them and it will help at some point in the future. As search engines try harder to understand what sites are about, using contextual markup will help. These changes to HTML and also the schema.org rich snippets will be used in future and will help. SEO is evolutionally as are development practices and it is all about staying ahead of the competition when search engines change the playing field.
I do know following the guidelines here, getting strong relevent links built and ensuring a fast user experience helps rank on sites we built. Does it give us an advantage oer the competition? Maybe, only time will tell.
-
hi this is a good site. so does this help with rankings and google by showing what the articles are on the site. at the moment i use sef404 so would have to add this to the site. sef uses h1 and h2 etc
-
We are setting up a site at http://www,dreambuilders.com.au which uses all those tags to seperate articles from navigation and the aside. It is still in development but the HTML 5 tags are set up.
Brett
-
can you give me an example of a page where you put this into place please
-
Sure Diane, Thanks. If HTML5 there are specific tags to denote type of content.
-
- means that the content between these tages is main content
-
<nav>- is the navigation links</nav>
-
<aside> - is subsiduary content, such as ad content and general information</aside>
This allows for seperation of interests and allows your site to have a logical flow and still provide contextual infromation about the content. If you look at our markup you see content wrapped in these tags.
-
-
very impressed with your site, can you explain what you mean by the following. We tag to HTML5 where it is clear what an article or main section is and navigation or subsidary links are,
-
Hi, I am a developer and hire an external SEO to do the link building but we do the site optimization following guidelines pointed out here and using the Moz Tools for our site www.oznappies.com
We tag to HTML5 where it is clear what an article or main section is and navigation or subsidary links are, as these are defined in the standard. This means we have total control of content meaning that Google will index. I also noticed that Google is including site speed in their beta analytics and so we optimise for performance, using best practices and cdn for js libraries. It is worth running your site through www.gtmetrics.com to see where you have performance issues that will affect rank in the near future, as Google is aiming at 5sec load time for user experience.
We are a new site (3 months old) and have moved from 100+ to page 1 for all our targeted key phrases, including the most competitive ones. We have in-house content authors writing original content every couple of days and posting on relevant forums and blog comments. We are now in the process of taging as schema.org rich snippets to prepare for search engines factoring this in.
-
oh yes content is god
you need content first
for links refer to http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/growing-popularity-and-links
-
-
sorry what i mean ref the info is.. the seo info as far as i understand is saying that content should come first rather than links to other pages as otherwise google sees that the page as a link page http://www.seomoz.org/beginners-guide-to-seo/basics-of-search-engine-friendly-design-and-development
but i cannot see any sites who follow this rule.
the other question is the links that you gain from other sites, do you join link swapping sites or do you contact websites to request a link exchange or write articles to gain links or use other methods to gain good quality links to your site.
-
i was talking about links from other sites to your site?
actually i dont understand your question
-
just looked at your site which is a great site. i have a question. in the info that i have been reading it is basically saying that by having the links first google just thinks it is a link page and should have the content first so google understands what the site is about. but saying this, you have your links first according to cache and the tool that is recommended to use and 99 per cent of sites also have the links first which is understandable. now this confuses me because it is naturally that you want your menu bar at the top or at the side, so i do not understand why the seo information is saying basically that you need your description and content before your links unless i am misreading it.
-
thank you. i am just about to look at your site. what do you look for when you search for quality links. do you join a link exchange programme, ask for links or look for sites where you can gain a link.
-
hi there - well I have pretty much followed the advice on here for my website (at least tried)
feel free to take a look - Garden Beet performs very well in natural search - but then I spend oddles of time optimising - onsite and offsite
The best offsite SEO strategy is getting high quality links that point to your domain - I have seen my website perform well - the problem is getting the right anchor links poiinting to the correct page - that kind of task is what will give you a position in the top 3
The best onsite SEO tasks are all the meta tags, unique content etc BUT your site has to look good to get people to share or bookmark your site -while a sexy site is overlooked by the robots its what draws people in
What I find amazing is the gap in knowledge between SEO people and developers - and dont believe developers who says they know all about SEO - unless they are actually doing it regularly - I fail to see how they can keep up -
if you have a very large website sometimes developers do not understand the key terms you are optimising for a given page - and inadverntely apply a h tag to a non-optimised sub heading- you need to watch the developers for little issues like this to ensure you SEO objectives are being achieved for each page - even templates sometimes get assigned the wrong h tags - duplicating the error site wide - it is difficult to know whether fixings errors such as these has a direct impact on search straight away
but I do know when all my meta was incorrectly copied over to a new site I lost over 50 key search positions - as soon as they were restored my positions were reinstated - let me say that was not fun - but clearly demonstrates the importance of correct meta titles and descriptions.

As our content can be quite long at the top, we introduced js anchor scroll going straight to the products, by passing the banner and the content at the top. Can this have an issue on seo?

Will changing category URLs on site hurt SEO?
Hi Moz Community, We're looking to replace some URLs on our Wordpress site and I want to make sure we won't hurt our SEO with the changes. The site is lushpalm.com When we originally launched our site we created pages (which are linked to in our main menu) to essentially display our categories. We did this as a workaround because we didn’t like the URL to have the word “category” in it. Now we would like to make some changes and we want to make sure we’re not going to hurt our SEO in any way by accidentally duplicating content or otherwise. We want to fix our structure and now link to our category pages from our main menu, BUT we want to change the URL of the category page so that it doesn’t have “category” in it, essentially renaming it the name of the page currently linked to in our main menu. So basically, the category lushpalm.com/category/surf-trips, would be renamed with the URL lushpalm.com/surf-trips and the current page that is at lushpalm.com/surf-trips would be therefore replaced. My questions are: If we did this, would that mean that the previous “lushpalm.com/category/surf-trips” would cease to exist? Or is there some imprint of that out on the web? And if it is then would it re-direct to the new page? Would replacing the current page URL with a category hurt our current SEO in any way? Would this change cause any duplicate pages somehow? Thanks so much for your help!

I have an authority site with 90K visits per month. Now I have to change from non www to www. Will incur in any SEO issues while doing that? Could you please advice me on the best steps to follow to do this? Thank you very much!
Because I want to increase site speed, Siteground (my hosting) suggested I use Cloudflare Plus which needs my site to have www in order to work. I'm also using a cloud hosting. Im a bit scared of doing this, and thus decided to come to the community. I used MOZ for over 6 months now and love the tool. Please help me make the best possible decisions and what steps to follow. It would be much appreciated. Thank you!

SEO question regarding rails app on www.site.com hosted on Heroku and www.site.com/blog at another host
Hi, I have a rails app hosted on Heroku (www.site.com) and would much prefer to set up a Wordpress blog using a different host pointing to www.site.com/blog, as opposed to using a gem within the actual app. Whats are peoples thoughts regarding there being any ranking implications for implementing the set up as noted in this post on Stackoverflow: "What I would do is serve your Wordpress blog along side your Rails app (so you've got a PHP and a Rails server running), and just have your /blog route point to a controller that redirects to your Wordpress app. Add something like this to your routes.rb: _`get '/blog', to:'blog#redirect'`_ and then have a redirect method in your BlogController that simply does this: _`classBlogController<applicationcontrollerdef redirect="" redirect_to="" "url_of_wordpress_blog"endend<="" code=""></applicationcontrollerdef>`_ _Now you can point at yourdomain.com/blog and it will take you to the Wordpress site._

Link Building: What Can I Reasonably Expect from SEO Firm
Dear Moz Community: I am considering hiring the SEO firm that conducted a web site audit for my company. The audit was very serious and thorough. Out of 400 domains linking to my site, the audit identified 40% as toxic, 45% as suspicious and only 5% as good quality. The SEO firm believes the poor link profile is very much holding back organic ranking and traffic. I am considering signing a six month contract to have them remove the toxic and suspicious links and also, build new quality links. Basically I have the following questions: -The SEO firm hopes to build 5-10 very high quality incoming links to my site per month. Is this a reasonable number? They claim that quantity is much more important than quality. -In the six month campaign, I will be paying for one month of research by the SEO provider before the link building kicks in earnest. In fact I will only get five months of link building despite paying for six months of service. Is this fair? -Is the removal of toxic links and the development of 25-50 new quality links and enough to improve ranking and traffic over six months? The site currently receives 4,000 visitors from organic search results per month.

Note that at the moment the site has only about 20 "quality" links. I would hate to exhaust my budget after six months with no tangible improvement! I would very much like to hear of anyone's experience or input regarding reasonable expectations regarding hiring an SEO firm for link building campaigns. Thanks!!!

New site now links disappearing in Open Site Explorer and GWT
We launched a new site at the beginning of December 2012 and carefully 301'd all URLs from the old site to the new (custom CMS on old site wordpress on new). Our rankings have slipped quite badly but the most worrying thing is that we used to have about 1200 backlinks according to GWT/OSE before the new site launched and now we're down to about 30. Can anyone help shed some light on this please? The site is www.littleoneslondon.co.uk A few things that might help: 1. We were getting a lot of links through our job feeds (it's a nanny recruitment site) on indeed and trovitt, for some reason no new ones from these have appeared in site explorer and all the old jobs are gone completely. 2. We had 1000s of not found errors in google webmaster tools and once these were redirected and marked as fixed this is when the links disappeared. 3. We are getting quite a few 504 errors on the site due to an old proxy redirect (/blog was hosted on a different server on the old site and has not been removed yet), this will be fixed tomorrow but could this be a factor? 4. The developer seems to have redirected all the links through wordpress directly some how (I don't see any redirect plugins but there are lots of pages called 'redirect'). There are no references in the htaccess file for any redirects other than from the /blog folder that the wordpress instance sits in. Sorry for the long post, I hope I've given any details you'd need and I really appreciate any help anyone can give. Thanks, Karl

Can a Hosting provider that also hosts adult content sites negatively affect our SEO rankings on a non-adult site hosted on same platform?
We're considering moving a site to a host that also offers hosting for adult websites. Can this have a negative affect on SEO, if our hosting company is in any way associated with adult websites?

How can we get a site reconsidered for Google indexing?
We recently completed a re-design for a site and are having trouble getting it indexed. This site may have been penalized previously. They were having issues getting it ranked and the design was horrible. Any advise on how to get the new site reconsidered to get the rank where it should be? (Yes, Webmaster Tools is all set up with the sitemap linked) Many thanks for any help with this one!
