Is it easier to rank high with a front page than a landing page?
-
My product is laptop and of cause, I like to rank high for the keyword "laptop". Do any of you know if the search engines tends to rank a front page higher than a landing page?
Eg. www.brand.com vs. www.brand.com/laptop
-
I haven't experienced a home page outranking a product page for anything other than a branded search. Most often a home page is not optimized for a particular key term. It is optimized as an outline for the site and to display promotions or other important things about the site.

Thanks for the reply. It was only an example with the laptop as product
My question is about if any of you have seen a trend in the search results that google rank front pages higher than landing page? I have been ranking #1 for a competitive search term with a landing page like
company.com/keyword
But now I have dropped several positions and the competitors that now outrank me have the front page as landing page. It doesn't seem that the competitors have done anything SEO-wise that should outrank me. -
Hi Peter. One problem you're going to run into is that people searching for the term laptop have a higher percentage chance of their search being an informational search than purchasing search. This is partly why you'll see Google displaying news, image, and related search boxes for example afterwards. They know that the term is so broad that people will most likely need to refine their search before getting to a result you want. For you this means a few things as far as how competitive it is...
- You'll be competing with the news. Unless your site is a repository and producer of computer news (like pcmag, pcworld, cnet...) you're going to struggle to compete with them.
- You'll be competing with global brands. Dell, WalMart, Amazon.
- You'll be competing with Info hubs. Wikipedia...
As such, you'll likely want to refine your goal keyword. What makes your laptop unique? How would a customer interested in your laptop describe your laptop? Things like that will help you refine your term as well as prepare your site for your future customers. Cheers!

On such a generic term you are going to need to strategically target and build your site around that topic.
Your home page generally tends to rank better because it brings a lot of traffic from people searching for your brand name and your domain name.
As far as URL structure. You want to have a structure that will really target your key term as naturally as possible. For ecomm sites you would use domain.com/category/product. That would be the best way to accomplish a strong keyword targeted URL.

Is there a way to get Google to index more of your pages for SEO ranking?
We have a 100 page website, but Google is only indexing a handful of pages for organic rankings. Is there a way to submit to have more pages considered? I have optimized meta data and get good Moz "on-page graders" or the pages & terms that I am trying to connect....but Google doesn't seem to pick them up for ranking. Any insight would be appreciated!

Is it good to redirect million of pages on a single page?
My site has 10 lakh approx. genuine urls. But due to some unidentified bugs site has created irrelevant urls 10 million approx. Since we don’t know the origin of these non-relevant links, we want to redirect or remove all these urls. Please suggest is it good to redirect such a high number urls to home page or to throw 404 for these pages. Or any other suggestions to solve this issue.

Joomla creating duplicate pages, then the duplicate page's canonical points to itself - help!
Using Joomla, every time I create an article a subsequent duplicate page is create, such as: /latest-news/218-image-stabilization-task-used-to-develop-robot-brain-interface and /component/content/article?id=218:image-stabilization-task-used-to-develop-robot-brain-interface The latter being the duplicate. This wouldn't be too much of a problem, but the canonical tag on the duplicate is pointing to itself.. creating mayhem in Moz and Webmaster tools. We have hundreds of duplicates across our website and I'm very concerned with the impact this is having on our SEO! I've tried plugins such as sh404SEF and Styleware extensions, however to no avail. Can anyone help or know of any plugins to fix the canonicals?

Will getting backlinks to landing page from low quality sites negatively affect SEO?
I've recently started an initiative at my company to get our customers to publish a blog post about our company and to include a link to a landing page which sits on a subdomain attached to our main domain. The reason for directing visitors to the post to a landing page is to help with conversion. I've recently been thinking that couldn't the backlinks to this landing page from our customers' blogs (generally small sites) have a negative impact on the overall SEO of my companies domain? Thanks in advance.

Is the Authority of Individual Pages Diluted When You Add New Pages?
I was wondering if the authority of individual pages is diluted when you add new pages (in Google's view). Suppose your site had 100 pages and you added 100 new pages (without getting any new links). Would the average authority of the original pages significantly decrease and result in a drop in search traffic to the original pages? Do you worry that adding more pages will hurt pages that were previously published?

Page Over-optimized?
I read over this post on the blog tonight: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/lessons-learned-by-an-over-optimizer-14730 & it's got me concerned that I might be having a similar issue on our site? Back in March & April of last year, we ranked fairly well for a number of long tail keywords, here is one in particular 'Mio Drink' for this page: http://www.discountqueens.com/free-mio-drink-from-kraft-facebook-offer The page is still indexed, but appears back on page #3 for the search term. During this time we had made a number of different updates to our site & I can't seem to put an exact finger on what might have caused the problem? Can anyone see any issues that might have caused this to drop? Thanks, BJ
