Social widgets, iFrames, Duplicate content and more...
-
Hi guys,
I am thinking about embedding a widget on my website that pulls social content from a number of networks.
The script (javascript) creates and iFrame and serves up social content which is embedded in an external page ie:
Tweet --> embedded on widget-domain.com/page.html --> embedded on my-domain.com via an iFrame.
Questions:
1. Will this carry any SEO benefit? Will Google see this as "fresh + frequent" content?
2. Will this carry any SEO penalties? Will Google see this as duplicate content?I hope thats enough info to get some feedback - let me know if I can provide any more.

That is correct

Thanks Monica and Ryan.
My takeaways are that Google may or may not attribute iFrame content to the page its embedded on.
Assuming that it does, then normal content quality rules apply.
It's unlikely that duplicate content penalties will apply with embedded social content as Googlebot is smart enough to figure this as a legitimate source of embeddable content.

As Monica mentions, this is questionable as to whether or not it'll be seen as content on your page, since it's embedded in an iFrame. Here's Google's take on it: "Pages that use frames or iframes display several URLs (one for each frame) within a single page. Google tries to associate framed content with the page containing the frames, but we don't guarantee that we will." From: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/34445.
There's not much of a worry about duplicate content with this practice, and many white hat, legitimate websites import comments and twitter feeds. The only cautions on penalties would be the standard, "avoid bad neighborhoods" or spammy social profiles in your comment stream. Cheers!

If all you can see in the source code is the widget, then that is all that the bots will see. If this widget is helpful for your searchers, then that will be the benefit. Google will only see that there is a widget on your site. It will not see any content that isn't in the source code. If you want the content to be seen, an RSS feed might be a better option.

Social media signals and their roles in Google rankings
Hello, I keep on hearing that social media signals have a role in the way Google ranks pages and sites, but for now, I haven't seen any hard evidence of that. Like any other company, we have pages on facebook, linkedin, google plus and twitter, to which we post daily. No, there are no clients coming in from social media, so I was wondering if it's worth investing time in adding every day updates, unless those count in ranking on Google. What do you think, is there a link between social media and Google rankings, and how much does this weight in ranking my sites? Thank you

International Social Media Pages
If your going to target multiple countries but who have same language (such as US & UK) which of the main social media accounts should you set up a country specific version for ? I know some like Google+ allow for sub-pages/listings for different localities/outlets etc so I presume you only need the one G+ company page (but pls confirm if you agree or not ?). I keep hearing peeps say set up country specific Twitter and FaceBook pages, do you agree ? and what about other main social sites like Pinterest & LinkedIn etc ? Thanks Dan

Social Signals Inquiry Regarding Competitor
There is a competitor in my sites industry, and per various tools like opensitexplorer, quicksprout, and searchmetrics, they have an evenly amount of massive (100k+ per page) facebook social signals (likes, shares, comments) to around 25-50 of their top pages on their site. They have no social media presence in terms of a fan page, and they rank on the first page for almost every single keyword that is niche related. How could it be possible to naturally have the same number of facebook social signals to all of your top pages? What have they done to even accomplish this, and is it only a matter of time before Google recognizes the black hat tactics they've put in place to manipulate the search engines?

What do I do about old content on my blog?
I run a blog: www.b2bsocialmediaguide.com. It's been going for 2.5 years and some of the old content is, frankly, dated! What do you recommend I do about it? 1. Update old articles with new, more relevant content and change the date? 2. Write new articles with the relevant content and forward the URLs from old articles to the new ones? 3. Do nothing. 4. Just add links to new content from old posts? I don't want to lose link juice!

How to reach beyond main social accounts
My blog is still very young - and I feel like a total newbie, but I'm working at it consistently. I've got 21 posts that I've put up since the beginning of January (except for 2 from October) and another in the pipeline and of course, plans to continue on this way. I've been building up my confidence and feel like it's just about time to branch out farther than my Google+, FaceBook, Twitter and LinkedIn accounts (which I've been doing regularly). My hope is to gain more visitors by publicizing the posts in some other environments. I would so appreciate some suggestions on how I might do that. And also, is it too soon? I don't want to jump the gun before there's an respectable/acceptable amount of content.
