What is the importance of root domains linking to your website in Google's rankings? I notice our competition has a much higher number on keywords I'm analyzing. Thank you!

I've noticed our competition has a much higher number of "root domains" linking to their page than we do. Is this simply a result of more websites linking to them? How long does it normally take to build up these numbers/rankings? (I'm assuming it's a concerted effort, which I'll be researching.) Thank you!

Wonderful, thanks Ryan!

Hi Miriam. Root domains are the first two extensions of a domain name, working right from left, so in the example www.google.com, the root domain is google.com. It's a handy metric because sometimes you get links from mobile versions of sites that are like m.google.com so by removing the third level (m, www, etc) you get a better idea of how many individual websites are linking to you or your competition. Like you've said, it's basically more websites linking to your competition.
Time to build varies! Some sites explode onto the web via viral content, product releases, huge funding, etc, but in your research you can likely get a decent idea of timeline by looking at dates on when various articles were written, how long a site's domain name has been registered, and their presence in archive.org's way back machine.
The Moz Learn center (http://moz.com/learn/seo) will definitely help you on your way. Cheers!

Links in other language than site's language
I have a quick question regarding usage of links in my articles or website. As I already told in my last night question, I drive 2 french blogs. I'm wondering if putting on english sites links in my articles or pages to add complimentary infos on a particular topic would be useful or messy for my SEO. In other words, will Google be misled by the fact that I write in french and that I put english links ot ressources in my texts even if they are on a related topic

Is there a ranking delay for highly competive Keywords?
Is there still a delay in ranking highly competitive keywords with commercial intent. If so how does it work exactly and how do you determine which keywords are highly competitive. Thanks

I found a link to my customer's site with an over-optimized
I found a link to my customer's site with an over-optimized anchor text using the OpenSite Explorer tool, but when I opened the link, my customer's link is nowhere to be found. Here is the link Opensiteexplorer gave me: http://www.derbymadness.com/my-profile/demolition-derby-groups/viewgroup/12-web And here is my customer's link: 1896omalleyhouse.com The link is not on the cached version of the page either. Can anyone tell me how this might happen? Thanks!

Copying Competitor's Link Backs?
Hello, Is it a viable idea to copy competitors link structure? Imagine we manage a new site with low page and domain authority. Is okay to use the Link Tool and filter domains that link back to our competitor and then work our way up from low ranking directories and related sites? Currently I am using RoboForm and trying to 'catch up' to a competitor in terms of link backs. Additionally, I've been reading articles about whether submitting to directories is good, but if we see they have alright domain and page authorities, does it make sense to apply to them when our competitors are in them? Much appreciated

301 to main page or deeper page for best 'link juice'.
I have two rafting websites. One ranks high for one set of keywords. The other ranks okay for a different set. I want to redirect the whole second site to the first to give the first more link juice and hopefully lift the first site even more in the rankings. Would it be better to link to a deeper page of the 1st site. I have a page that does well for some long tail keywords or would it be better to link to the main page. Or is it a bad idea over all.
