Lost 24 places with one keyword
-
Hi All,
Hope I could get some help. Moz has just finished crawling 1 of our 4 business sites and one of our keywords has dropped 24 places (21st to 45th).
Is this the new algorithm at play? (our site is responsive)
Cheers

First of all David, I would wait until the next refresh before making any decision on what could / couldn't have caused this. The MOZ tracker might have just caught the SERP in the middle of a bit of a Google dance, so it may return to where it was originally.
If not, then we can look at other alternatives - it certainly doesn't sound like changing the page title as you suggest, could do this.
Cheers,
Andy

Hi Andy,
Im using the keyword rankings tool in Moz. I first saw the drop today after the crawl compared to last week. I have made a change yesterday as the Page title wasnt correct (it was some random content) and the meta descirption was the same content as the page title - neither which included the keyword that im targeting.
Hope this is the right direction ?
Cheers

Great - Thanks as always mate

Hi David,
Very difficult to say with any degree of certainty. There is so many reason why this could be but if you are seeing the drop in rankings on a desktop machine rather than mobile, it won't be the mobile algorithm.
When did you first see the drop? What are you using to do your tracking? Have you made any changes to the site recently or undertaken any off-site work such as link building?
Cheers,
Andy

Hi David
I would line up the drop with the algorithm history; from there you can assess the following:
-
Do I need to do a content audit?
-
Do I need to do a backlink audit?
-
Are my issues mobile related?
-
Just because a site is responsive doesn't mean there arent other issues
-
Do I need to look into my local SEO?
If it was a recent drop (within the last week) I would say it's probably based on mobile, but you would have to check your mobile traffic in your Google Analytics.
I would specifically look into that page and check your Google Webmaster Tools to see if any other issues have been happening or seen. Make sure your on-site SEO is on point, content is well kept and optimized, look into your backlinks (and your competitor's who may now be ranking - this is to be used as a guide - not a copycat), and you should find out pretty quick where the issue is.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

Trouble making up a keyword map
I’m starting my first blog and I’m in the phase of making a keyword map. Now I’m not sure about how it done and if it is done right. I would be thankfull if you’d be so kind to check it out and tell me if it’s good or not and what should change. PM me if you wanna help me, I'll send out the excel file. P.S.S.: For those who help out, don’t mind the almost empty transactional column, ignore that, just advice on how it is ordered.

What do I do with an old site when a new one is built?
I have a customer that has a PR 4 website with over 3000 pages of content. He decided to build a brand new website with a new domain and it now has a PR of 2. Our question is, what do we do with the old site? Do we migrate all the content over to the new site and do redirects on all the pages? Do we keep the old site up and put links over to the new site? He was just planning on shutting it down but that seemed like a complete waste of PR and SEO. What is his best course of action? Thanks for your replies.

URL paths and keywords
I'm recommending some on-page optimization for a home builder building in several new home communities. The site has been through some changes in the past few months and we're almost starting over. The current URL structure is http://homebuilder.com/oakwood/features where homebuilder = builder name Oakwood Estates= name of community features = one of several sub-paths including site plan, elevations, floor plans, etc. The most attainable keyword phrases include the word 'home' and 'townname' I want to change the URL path to: http://homebuilder.com/oakwood-estates-townname-homes/features Is there any problem with doing this? It just seems to make a lot of sense. Any input would be appreciated.

Could Having Blog Posts as Home Page Cause Keyword Dilution?
Something I've never been a fan of is having a blog as the home page of a site. I've always thought that it's a bit like walking into someone's house through the kitchen out back.

If it's a vistors first time, it can be a little disconcerting or ackward even if they are not familiar with the writers style. But something just dawned on me, and I'd love a second opinion on this. For websites that focus on multiple keywords (in my most of my client's case it's usually a mix of Wedding Photography, Engagement Photography, Portrait Photography, Family Photography, etc). A lot of these clients will include the photos in a blog post along with a snippet of text that may talk about the people they're photographing and maybe a bit about where they photographed. But they're usually optimizing for the overarching keyword (Wedding... Portrait..., etc as per above). Now I'm wondering if having three or 5 posts on the home page, where most of them are focusing on a specific keyword like New York Wedding Photographer, is actually diluting the keyword they are trying to rank for. My theory is that if I have them move their blog to a domain.com/blog, and solely focus on the desired keyword on the home page, that they would do substantially better in the SERPs. Can anyone subtantiate this? Thanks!0 -
Meta Title Keywords and Company name
Currently our meta title says "Network Security Audit | Pivot Point Security" which is pretty broad considering how many services we offer. In trying to restructure our keywords, marketing and SEO focus, I came up with a new title. The problem I have is figuring out which keywords to use in the title, and with a company name with 3 words - I am running out of room. The new title idea is "Information Security Assessments - Penetration Testing | Pivot Point Security" So my questions are the following. Do I need to put the company name? Should I choose different keywords? I'm sort of at a stand still trying to figure out the best possible title since meta keywords or description won't really help ranking.

Keywords Ranking Dropped from 1st Page to Above 5th Page
Hello, My site URL is http://bit.ly/161NeE and our site was ranked first page for over hundred keywords before March, 30. But all of a sudden, all the keywords on first page dropped to 5th or 6th page. When we search for our site name without ".com", the results appeared on first page are all from other sites. And our page can only be seen on 6th page. We think we have been penalized by Google. But we don't know the exact reason. Can anyone please help? Some extra info on our site: 1. We have been building links by posting blog, articles and PR. All the articles are unique, written by the writers we hire. It has been working fine all the time. We also varied the anchor text a lot. 2. We didn't make any change to the website. But one real problem with our site is that the server is very slow recently and when google crawl our website, many errors were found, mostly 503, 404 errors. And the total number of errors have reach to over 50,000. Do you think this might be a problem for Google not displaying us on first page? Our technicals are working hard to solve server problem. And if it is solved, shall our rankings be back? Please advise. Thanks.
