Newby question about 301 redericts
-
I work for a design firm who has been updating a website for a client. In addition to a new look, we've consolidated redundant pages for a more streamlined site. My question is this: when I have replaced 3 somewhat redundant pages on the old site with 1 page on the new site, should I 301 redirect all the former pages to the one new page. I know this question is beyond basic but I'm pretty new to SEO, so be gentle.

Patrick,
Thanks for the info on disavowing backlinks. I'm just starting to dig into it.
Re: Running through backlinks, I read the article you referenced. It was pretty comprehensive but it wasn't clear to me how to redirect a backlink to the new page. Is this something to discuss with the person responsible for linking to you or is there a technology solution you have in mind. I feel like a bonehead having to ask, but I'm eager to learn here, so I'm ignoring the potential for looking pretty stupid and asking anyway.

Awesome. You've gone above and beyond! Thanks again. I look forward to digging into the details of these links just as soon as I can.

Hi Paul
Yes, you would, but the vast majority of the work is done with research.
Here are some resources:
Disavow backlinks (Google)
Your Start-to-Finish Guide to Using Google's Disavow Tools (Moz)
Disavowed: Secrets of Google's Most Mysterious Tool (Moz)Take a look at these as well as the backlink audit resources above. That should help you get started!
Hope this helps!

Thanks, Patrick. I certainly do appreciate the pointers. I've never done anything with disavowing backlinks although I've heard about it. Do you do this in GWT?

Hi there
If the information from those pages moved to the new page and are still relevant, you should 301 redirect those pages.
I would also update your sitemap and upload it to Google and Bing Webmaster Tools.
I would also make sure your internal links are up to date and and that you run through your backlinks to correct backlinks to the new page URL or to remove those that are relevant/spammy.
Hope this helps! Good luck!

301 Redirecting http to https
In the Moz Site Crawl issue, I was seeing an error that said we were temporarily redirecting our homepage to https URLs. So I changed the code in htaccess to make it 301 redirect but I'm still getting the same error. I implemented it last week and we just had a new crawl yesterday. Here is the new code: RewriteEngine on

301 redirect Question
Hi all, I have a client who has a domain lets say www.xyz.de which is redirected 301 to www.zyx.de. Now they're working on a relaunch and they want to use the www.xyz.de as their origibnal doman after that. So, at the end the www.zyx.de - which is indexed by Google - should be redirected to www.xyz.de. It vice versa. So the redirect becomes the original and the original becomes the redirect 😕 Is there anything we have to care off? Or will that run into the hell? Thanx. Seb.

Title Keyword Order Question
Hey there, Hoping someone could provide me with an answer / some insight into this. As an example, if I were to be targeting "Fish markets in" and "Fish shops in" as my keyword(s). And my site name was "The Fish Guide". I am trying to populate my title tags as best as possible without sacrificing readability and definitely making an effort to avoid the the spam-factor. Ideally I'd like to rank well (just focusing on titles at the moment, nothing else) when a user searches for "Fish markets in London" and **"Fish shops in London" **or "Fish markets in Los Angeles" or "Fish shops in Berlin" etc. If I were to use the following structure in my titles (in this case for London): "Fish markets and fish shops in London - The Fish Guide" Would this work as I hope? I.E. If a user searched for either "Fish shops in London" or "Fish markets in London" would the format of my title in this example work or would I need to have "Fish Markets in London" and "Fish Shops in London" grouped together? E.G. "Fish Markets in London - Fish Shops in London - The Fish Guide" Thanks!

Link juice and 301 redirects
Hi, I have a page with a lot of links going to it. I want to change the name of the page (thereby changing the URL). I can do a 301 redirect, but does a 301 send the "link juice" to the new page? The page in question is www.aerlawgroup.com/dui.html, and I want to change it to www.aerlawgroup.com/dui-lawyer.html. Thank you in advance for your time.

Where to put 301 redirects in Magento?
I will be changing the URL structure in a magento store from "base/category/subcategory/product" to "base/product" which means i have to make over 1000 URL 301 redirects so our old links still work. Should i put the redirects in a .htaccess file so they stay intact no matter what or should i just put them in with all the other rewrites (in Magento 's URL rewrite manager)? Thanks

How do I clean up this 301 disaster?
I launched my site, InternetCE.com, and blog, www.continuingeducationjournal.com, a few years ago. I then learned I should probably merge the content, and foolishly created a subdomain, http://blog.internetce.com, and 301 redirected the blog to it. As an aside, my site is on a microsoft server, thus cannot host my wordpress blog on it. After a bit more study, I realized that my blog wasn't helping me nearly as much as it could be, so I 301'd it again to http://internetce.com/blog. In just becoming a pro member (long overdue) I realize that my entire site needs to be 301'd to merge non-www and www versions. I read somewhere that mr. cutts says not to 301 more than twice for fear of mistakenly being construed as something a bit to spammy. So, here I sit..not sure what to do. Does anyone have any advice on how to most efficiently correct this spaghetti bowl? Many thanks!
