Help me understand the gap between DMOZ and the Google Directory?
-
I have seen other sites showing up in OSE with backlinks from both DMOZ and Google Directory. We are in DMOZ, and our backling is showing for that in OSE, but i don't understand how to get added to the Google directory? When i go to the appropriate category, and click "submit link" it just takes me back to DMOZ!
Is there something i'm doing wrong here?
This is the page we are on in DMOZ
And this is the page i believe we should be on in the google directory
As a side note, i would love to hear your opinions if this really even matters? does google really use it's own directory as part of its search algorithm?

Hah! first they take the "more about this place" out of the places pages, and now this. I feel like I've wasted so much time chasing after citations and directory links!!
Lesson learned the hard way i guess.

Google just discontinued the Google Directory, so it's now a bit of a moot point. There's a post at http://searchengineland.com/final-nail-in-the-google-directory-coffin-86505 with more information.

I don't believe there is much correlation between being listed in the Google directory and rankings. Quality content, design, and links from more relevant local sites will be worth spending effort on and yield more immediate results. Very nice site. I noticed one of your competitors had this link, might be worth pursuing: http://www.packagingsupplies.com/links.cfm

Well i think i just figured out the answer to part one of my question:
"Getting Your Site Into Portals and Search Engines Using ODP Data
If your site has been accepted into the Open Directory, it may take anywhere from 2 weeks to several months for your site to be listed on partner sites which use the Open Directory data, such as AOL Search, Google, Netscape Search, Yahoo Search, and hundreds of other sites. We make updates of the data available weekly, but each partner has their own update schedule."
Would still like your opinions on if you have any experiance with speeding up this process??? Because we've been in DMOZ for a couple months now, but still no google directory.

Before submitting to a directory, what do you look for?
I'm going through one of my competitors links and of course I'm coming across some directories. Just wondering what you might look for in a quality directory. I'm looking at one right now called SoMuch.com and it appears to be a quality directory but then I look down at the footer and I see "Search Engine Friendly Free Link Directory". The domain authority is 80. Thanks

Regarding Google Reconsideration
Hi Webmaster, Our website recent affected after the panda update. We got the mail from Google webmaster tools regarding the unnatural backlinks for our website. Due do this update we have edited most of the backlinks with natural way. Our question is we had submitted more free directories, from free directories we are getting more backlinks, like from a single domain we are getting more than 50+links, those are coming from the tags pages, also those are one way links, so we can’t edit that. Is it good for the website? After that edit we had sent couple of Google reconsideration report. But we got the reply like still you have the bad neighborhood links. Previously it was ranking well before the Google panda update. Could you please help me? Thanks

Google Display Network
Hello! Ive been analyzing my competitors backlinks and see a large number of their google display ads shows as (alt text). I do have a google adwords account but stayed away from it in the past opting to use the search network only to keep cost down. Do the images count as a backlink if I can see them in the Seomoz tool? Thank You!!

How to understand Link Detective results
When running my website on link detective I found that 40% of my links were unknown and 41% were dead. I have a very strong affiliate network and it seems like most of the unknown are from affiliates. How should I interpret the dead links - is this harming my site? Thanks!

Directories are Paid links right ?
How are directories ok for buying links ? How can the funds be claimed to be used to review your submission when everyone knows you are basically buying a link ? What experiences have you had god and bad with directories ? Is it a free for all any directory will do or should you be more selective in your approach. If so what are the signs to look out for on a top quality directory.

When is Google going to sort their act out?
I work with a couple of clients in the finance and debt area. I've been doing loads of work examining the link profiles of the commercial sites at the top of the rankings and 70% of the links I am seeing are low value directories and sites obviously built for links with multiple outgoing links to completely unrelated sources! When I examine the other links their isn't enough value in them to outweigh what looks to me like very obvious and spammy low quality link building. Why can't Google see what I'm seeing - it's so obvious? I know there are multiple factors at play but links like these should offer no value or get a site penalised (isn't that what Google tell us) but these sites still seem to be ranking because of them rather than despite them!

Listings, paid profiles and directories
Hi, In the industry I am working in (education), we do have a lot of portals offering paid listings (for example profiles featuring a school, the courses you offer, sometimes with reviews etc). Almost all big competitors and big names normally do have these kind of listings. Besides from having to decide if these sites really bring the relevant conversions, I am wondering about their impact on SEO. An example for an offer:

Our Top Picks listing is a 40 word listing and logo we put on any 30 pages of our web site, example.com for 12 months, for $595 US. You can choose the pages you want, or we can put you on all our [category] pages, or certain continents/countries you want to target. Now, I am wondering: Do I have to worry about my linking profile ? (All of sudden a bunch of links with the exact same anchortext and content embedding to our site?) Or can I just decide to go with a paid listing based on the link value the page offers me? Looking forward to reading what you think!
