Optimizing Forums
-
Hello Moz Team,
I'd like to inquire about our forums section on how to optimize them the best way. So, we started a forums section and our audience likes them very much, we were able to get a few hundred subscribers and it has been very active http://violintutorpro.com/forums/
I created a campaign in Moz Analytics and it came back that we had tons of dupe content, all coming from the tags in the forums. We can remove the tags just so we won't have dupe content, but, how can we use each topic as a content on their own. We currently have a few hundred of dupe content.

Hi Jac!
Are you concerned about the category pages themselves being indexed? If not, you can block crawlers from accessing them with robots.txt. You might even try adding "noindex, follow" to them, to ensure crawlers move through their links without indexing the "duplicate" content.

I think a lot with this is going to come down to what is powering the forums.
That said, looking at one of your pages: http://violintutorpro.com/topic/shoulder-rest-search/, it has a friendly URL & the page Title is what you would expect it to be. Also, the page is indexed.
The page isn't set to noindex and I don't see anything else that would concern me. From here, it's going to be about building up trust and, ideally, links as well.

Optimize homepage or category for main keyword?
Hello, we have an advertisements website. Usually in each country we have this one "main" keyword which has the largest amount of searches. Now we have done both ways in different markets. Sometimes optimize the homepage www.example.com for the keyword, sometimes optimize **www.example.com/thekeyword **the category page. I do not have solid data which works better, as Keyword difficulties are too big to compare. The good thing with category is that i would have internal links pointing to it and keyword in the url. Questions: 1. Which do you recommend better?

Optimizing a Forum (phpbb3)
Hi all, Over the last 6 months our small forum has be getting a tiny bit of traffic. We would like to make the forum a larger part of what we are offering (content wise). Regardless, I am wondering if anyone had any recommendations for optimizing a phpbb3 forum as Moz seems to keep telling me that I have 70,000 pieces of duplicate content, duplicate pages, etc. While the site crawl by moz outputs varying results week to week, it appears to be tagging posts and responses to posts as duplicate content. I am concerned that Google may be doing the same. Additionally, are there any recommendations for best practices related to forum meta descriptions and page titling as well? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Jared P.

Disavowing Links: Over-optimized Anchor Text
If a site has been effected by Penguin, and the main issue is over-optimized anchor text. Would the disavow file take care of this? If there is a no-follow added to the link when Google next crawls the site, wouldn't you still have the optimized anchor text in your profile?
