Ranking problem.

Hello,
Using Moz I can see that my ranks for my site ZenPlugs.com for keywords such as 'ear plugs' and 'molded ear plugs' and several other keywords aren't as high as other sites with similar DAs. I can't see why, am I missing something?
Many thanks,
Toby

There are two parts to optimizing titles and meta descriptions. Deal with the later first - Meta descriptions should firstly be optimized for clickability as they hold no significant SEO value. So use your 156 characters to create a great CTA.
Titles however are a different beast as they hold significant SEO value. In creation of the perfect Title you need to weigh two competing factors - SEO -v- Clickability.
In the title SEO has the priority or should come first - hence identify the keywords chasing. Then you work out the most clickable way to present those words. Here is a link to another post that answers your question. http://moz.com/community/q/how-should-be-a-perfect-seo-title-description-h1-and-h2
Moz has a snippet tool you can use. https://moz.com/blog/new-title-tag-guidelines-preview-tool Before getting to that use Semrush or another keyword tool your prefer to identify the keywords you are chasing and than start playing with the snippet tool.
Let me know if you have any questions. If you create a title and a description - happy to review it for you.

I have been working my way through the Technical Site Audit Checklist by Geoff Kenyon which tells me to make sure 'Important pages have click‐through rate optimized titles and meta descriptions'. How would you do this?
-
Hey Toby,
So many possibilities as to why this could be.
However, I would not use SEMrush right at this second because they recently changed their algorithm and with that, they show a lot of site pages that have low content ratios, when they actually aren't too bad.
An example... I am doing some work on a client site this week and next. 2 weeks ago, they ran a crawl and it showed just over 300 pages with low content ratio. Last week it showed over 1,400. After they spoke to them, it does indeed seem to be down to their update.
I would instead suggest trying Deepcrawl. Why? Because you are able to adjust thresholds (as shown in the attachment) that give you control over a healthy threshold rather than something that is just too sensitive. You also get a lot more useful data (IMO) so at a glance, you can see what is going on.
Outside of this, it is always difficult to try and put your finger on why someone ranks above you and if you put two identical sites side-by-side who have identical DA, then you can start by looking at the trust the site has within Google. The article at Backlinko is a very interesting read and I suggest grabbing a coffee and going through it.
If you haven't already, download ScreamingFrog because this is seen as a de-facto standard for any SEO. Something every SEO has in their toolbox.
I would also suggest reading this article by Bill Slawski on how Google may classify sites as low quality. Some great insights in there.
Let me know if there is anything else.

Thank you! I'll get cracking.

Thanks for linking to my post even 2 years on. I should really do an updated version.
But you're essentially right - there are many reasons beyond PA & DA why a site ranks or doesn't rank, outranks you or simply doesn't show up. PA & DA have a place in ranking sites and pages against each other but not for how they rank based on a particular keyphrase.
Think about it like this. Moz.com is a very authoritative domain, right? Not so much about pizza and learning French, though.
So we can start with PA & DA but we need a lot more information to determine how a site will rank for a given keyphrase in a specific version of Google searched by a particular user.

A conundrum we face daily. Working through the long lists detailed above is arduous work and I will suggest a start.
If you have access do a site audit with moz or semrush. If access to moz review the moz trust score. After a site Audit you should have a better understanding of some technical issues but there are two factors that I address asap page speed. Just checked your on tools.pingdom and it was below 2 seconds which is excellent.
The second aspect which I suspect has high relevance is bounce rate. I would imagine bounce rate could be a factor for your site from a quick look at the home page. I am not sure whether the site is a shop, info brochure on ear plugs etc. I did not see a CTA. So if your bounce rate is above say 50% I would be studying GA for behavior on the site. Work out what page customers are dropping off, and then dedicate your self to getting the customer to move to the next page. Follow them all the way through to a conversion. If not enough traffic ask family or friends - though they can be brutal.
There are plenty of other items on your list - but understanding your customer and how they are interacting with your site is vital - and creating a deep connection with the right customer is integral to sustained success. If people have a good on site experience they will talk about your site and come back.
Ask away for clarity on any point.

Thank you, very helpful!

Hi Toby,
There are various other factors that affects ranking apart from DA & PA so it is not the best way to judge ranking only on the basis of same or similar DA.
Please check similar below thread so you can get whole idea on this.

Does RSS Feed help to rank better in Google?
Hello, I heard RSS Feed helps in ranking. However, I am not sure if I should enable RSS Feed or not. Whenever I publish an article on my site , I see that many other websites have leeched my Feed and get's the same article I written published with a nofollow backlink to my website article. The worst part is that my article doesn't appear in Google search, but the website which copied my article gets ranked in Google. Although the article gets index on google (checked by using site:website.com). Although some articles show up after 24 hours by ranking higher from the sites which copied my article. Any idea what should I do? Thank you

Problem with getting a site to rank at all
We pushed this Word Press site live about a month ago www.primedraftarchitecture.com. Since then we've been adding regular content, blog posts 3 times a week with social posts on facebook, twitter, G+ and LinkedIn. We also submitted via Moz Local about 3 weeks ago. Yext about two weeks ago and have been adding about 5 listings to small local directories a week. Webmaster tools shows that the site map is valid and the pages of the site are getting indexed and it shows links from 7 sites, mostly directories. I'm just not seeing the site ranking for anything. We're getting zero organic traffic. I though we did a good job not over optimizing the pages. I'm just stymied trying to figure out what's wrong. Usually we push a site live and see at least some low rankings after just a couple of weeks. Can anyone see anything that looks bad or where we've gone wrong?

Google ranking is HORRIBLE. Following SEOMoz suggestions and just can't climb.
First of all, the URL is stores.dhsequipment.com. In January, this online store switched from Homestead to Big Commerce. Since the store updated, we decided now is the time to update our product descriptions, URL's, title tags and meta descriptions. (For the first time, we had the ability to customize our URL's.) Product Description: I went through 2,500 products and updated the product description. I added an H1 & H2 to each description, and included pertinent information such as part numbers. Each product also received a new page title, meta description (which is usually the first line of the product description, don't know if this is bad or not) and a new URL, (which did redirect). Once I would complete a section, I would submit a new sitemap to Webmaster Tools. After a month and nothing happening, I started using SEOMoz which helped me rebuild some of my more important pages, such as the home page and main category pages such as: http://stores.dhsequipmentparts.com/stihl-ts420-parts/

http://stores.dhsequipmentparts.com/stihl-ts700-parts-stihl-ts800-parts/ I fetched these pages in Webmaster Tools after completion. However, it's been several weeks since and I'm still on page 4 or 5 in the SERPs. Just a little history on the store; this store has been in operation for more than 6 years. Previously, we ranked on page one for 75%+ of our products. My belief is because our URL's had history, probably more so than our competitors. I'm not sure what I should do. Business is super slow and we can't afford to wait much longer.0 -
Duplicate Content when Using "visibility classes" in responsive design layouts? - a SEO-Problem?
I have text in the right column of my responsive layout which will show up below the the principal content on small devices. To do this I use visibility classes for DIVs. So I have a DIV with with a unique style text that is visible only on large screen sizes. I copied the same text into another div which shows only up only on small devices while the other div will be hidden in this moment. Technically I have the same text twice on my page. So this might be duplicate content detected as SPAM? I'm concerned because hidden text on page via expand-collapsable textblocks will be read by bots and in my case they will detect it twice?Does anybody have experiences on this issue?bestHolger

Website redesign and it's impact on ranking
Hey Everyone, I have had a website in place for over 7 years and I am now at the point where I need to implement a redesign in order to sell our product more effectively. -URL's will stay the same
On-Page Optimization | | Justin45
-Content will change but be very similar page-to-page
-Title & Meta tags will remain the same I'm planning on taking the site from a non-backend site to a wordpress site so the navigation will change. Does anyone foresee that this change will have any dramatic effect on site ranking? Thank You!0 -
Replacing website, same URL, lose ranking
We had to do a rush job for a client and get a website up very quickly. We had to just replace the existing files on the server, but URL stayed the same. Now "teeth whitening glasgow" which they were number #1 for isn't coming up. Know there is still some on page work to be done - but the link profile should still remain the same? Just looking for some advice to get back to where they were - should we do a website change of address or just verify the site in Webmaster and get all the on page done? Thanks, Laura

Does hosting server location affect my local google page rank
Hi All, This is my first (of many I would say) questions. My clients site is in Ireland but the hosting service is in Canada. So when i use the MozBar it states that the IP is in Canada. Will this affect my page ranking in Dublin, Ireland? The company is a plumbing service so we would only want local Dublin customers. Thanks so much and I hope someone can help me out. cheers, Aidan

Does a page's url have any weight in Google rankings?
I'm sure this question must have been asked before but I can't find it. I'm assuming that the title tag is far more important than the page's url. Is that correct? Does the url have any relevance to Google?
