Do search engines take into account the location of a sight with regards to links?

Hey everyone!
I have a local company and I am just starting my link building campaign. I have a question in regards to how search engines work. If I want to receive web traffic from only the New York area would I want to receive links from sites located in Arizona, Utah or even England and Sweden? Assuming these sights are high in popularity and centered on the same content? Or would it be wiser for me to target smaller, local sights and blogs that are in the New York area?

In addition to all of the above from Miriam and David, I am wondering if it makes sense for you to have traffic from Arizona, Utah, England and Sweden. Like, is your business something that tourists would be interested in? If so, then yes, it makes total sense to get links from those places. On the other hand, if your business is only of interest to locals, then it might not make much sense to chase links so far removed from your service area.
My approach to Google is often more philosophical than technical, and I'd expect Google may be more trusting of links originating closer to the business. Even if they aren't currently favoring local links algorithmically, it's what I would expect their goal to be since local authority would be a trump card in the real world. If you asked someone in Madrid and someone from New York where to find the best dry cleaner in Manhattan, whose opinion would you trust more? Even if the guy in Madrid actually was a dry cleaner but otherwise had no ties to Manhattan? Why wouldn't Google be trying to think the same way?

I think, in addition to the advice David has given you regarding starting your work with ensuring that your citations are in good order (do a quick check to start you out on moz.com/local/search) on the major citation sources, there are two categories of links that would be most helpful to you:

A presence on any locally-relevant site of high quality

A presence on any industry-relevant site of high quality, regardless of its location
So, for example, you could aim to get a good profile going on your city's chamber of commerce. In addition to that, let's say you're in the fence building business. In that case, a presence on any contracting industry sites would be helpful to you. This might include places you're accredited or otherwise associated, regardless of if they are physically located in your city or a completely different state.
A two-pronged approach to examining your opportunities should cover the waterfront.

For your link building, start with largest and most popular ciatation sites (Yelp, Yellow Pages, Foursquare, Merchant Circle, etc). Google will treat those sites with more weight and authority than a small local directory. That's not to say that you shouldn't target local directories, but only to state that you should target the trusted and validated networks first.
If you want to speed up the process you could always use Yext or Moz Local. For the differences between the two your can view this page: https://moz.com/community/q/does-anyone-use-moz-local-yext
Also, when targeting small local link directories, make sure it is a validated or trusted source. You wouldn't want to do your site more harm then good. Hope this helps!
EDIT: If you were to focus on the big local sites, see if you can get into large news sites through press releases. Getting a backlink from the New York Times or someone like that.
To answer your question, yes it can help if the directory is local, but more often than not it depends on who is doing the linking. If you got a link from the home page of Moz that would be more valuable than any small local directory. Make sense?

Google My Business right had side block disapeared for a brand search
Hi Just redeveloped my site and went live end of April Since then whenever i do a branded search the GMB 'pack' has always shown on the right hand side whenever i do a branded search but it has disapeared as of the last couple of days. Any ideas why this can happen ? and is it anything to worry about or just a google 'glitch' that should right itself soon? If not any ideas how to fix ? (accounts and website all properly linked) etc When i go to GMB dashboard and click 'View on Search' it does show up as it should, but not when i go to do a google search for the brand name !? Paid review service stars in search ads - why is that allowed?
I'm looking at paid review services like Trustpilot, FeeFo and others. I'm told I can filter out bad reviews, which I can't do with my Google Certified Stores reviews. I'm struggling to understand why Google include these in the reviews it uses for the star ratings in search ads. I know it's a different thing, but surely these reviews are in breach of the rules that Google apply to their own "My Business" reviews? They talk about "Conflict of interest: Reviews are most valuable when they are honest and unbiased" here: https://support.google.com/business/answer/2622994?hl=en Does anyone have a take on whether Google will drop these as the momentum builds in collection of their own reviews? Rich Snippets (Rating stars) not showing up on website in search results
Hello, I have All in One Schema.org Rich Snippets plugin installed on my WP websites for the star snippets to show up in google search results. I used the Item Review property in this plugin for the homepage and under Reviewer’s Name (added name of author), Item to be reviewed (added brand/business name) and Your Rating (of course 5 :)). Now, the problem occurring is that instead of stars showing up in search results, the date when the respective page was published is showing up in search results. This is happening with all the websites I added plugin in. Am I doing something wrong or what is happening. Please help as i want those stars to show up on the websites. Please help me with any plugin or useful info that can help me with this. Thanks!

Rich snippets are not showing in search
We have a new real estate website. It was launched some 3-4 months back. Search results are not showing rich snippets. Although as per Google testing tool everything is just fine(All Good) As per Google webmaster they deduct 0 pages with structured data. Please suggest. Not able to see star ratings Rich Snippet in Google SERP with use of keyword search
Hello, I am webmaster of http://www.bannerbuzz.com and i have applied google rich snippet http://schema.org/aggregateRating for review star ratings in google SERP. I have checked my link in rich snippet tool, i have attached screenshot, you can see it in screenshot no 1 So according to this result i have implemented code properly. When i have checked site:www.bannerbuzz.com in google, then i can see star rating in some of my website's categories, but when i check some of those keywords in google SERP, then i can not see star rating in those keywords.i have attached screenshot below. with search terms : site:www.bannerbuzz.com you can see it in screenshot no 2 with search terms : vinyl banners you can see it in screenshot no 3 So anyone check the same things and let us know the solution if it possible to see star ratings in specific keywords. Google Places - Main Location Change = New Page?
I have my main Google Places / Google+ Local page in Detroit where I've had it for probably 5 years and have 10 5-star reviews. It shows up pretty well in the local listings. I recently moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota and while I'm still doing business in Detroit and have an office location, my main location is now Sioux Falls. I've started a new Google+ page here, but it's not doing very well and I don't have many reviews. Which of the following should I do? 1. Create New Page and Leave the Old page where it is Create a new page for Sioux falls and leave the old page in Detroit. It will take some time to build up the new location profile. 2. Change the Address of the Old Page (Detroit) to my new address in Sioux Falls Could I change the address of the old page (Detroit) to my new address in Sioux Falls, then create a new page for Detroit? This would hopefully have my page with all of the reviews, which has been around for awhile, in my new main location and I could create a new page for Detroit. Does anyone have any experience with this? What do you think would be the best approach?

Why ratings (no. of reviews & stars) still not showing in search results?
We implemented Schema and submitted the pages (with actual ratings and reviews) to Google Webmaster's Structured Data Markup tool a few weeks ago, but the ratings (stars and no. of reviews) are not showing yet. How long do I need to wait? TIA!
