Are businesses still hiring SEO that use strategies that could lead to a Google penalty?
-
Is anyone worried that businesses know so little about SEO that they are continuing to hire SEO consultants that use strategies that could land the website with a Google penalty? I ask because we did some research with businesses and found the results worrying: blog farms, over optimised anchor text. We will be releasing the data later this week, but wondered if it something for the SEO community to worry about and what can be done about it.

Thanks for the answer Marie. That is true about the SEO in the middle who can talk the talk and can get away sounding like a pro. It's also true that many small businesses, especially those online, have little budget but have the desire, if not the need, to rank and just can't afford big budgets, so they are at the mercy of the cheaper SEOs.

At my office we have two people working almost 40 hours each per week on content and one person filling the sales. That, in my opinion, is what is required to produce rain when you don't have a big brand name generating automatic traffic. (We also make a little money from ads.) Most business are not willing to spend that kind of time on content. The only SEO that we do is on-site.

Yes.
A few years ago there was a massive pool of people who called themselves SEOs who could generally accomplish decent rankings by using techniques that are not in line with the quality guidelines. Now, that pool has gotten a lot smaller. In my opinion the "good SEOs" are those who are extremely knowledgable about on-site SEO and know how to properly create content and promote that content.
Those are skills, however that take years to learn. Gone are the days where someone can take a quick course, buy a few links, slap up some spammy microsites and rank. Yet, some people are still trying because that's all they knew. And sadly, business owners are still buying this crap.
What bothers me the most though is the type of SEO provider who is borderline. They promise that they are "white hat" and don't make spammy links, but they'll happily post links on their private blog network and submit guest posts to hundreds of sites that will publish them. The business owner often hears "white hat" and is easily convinced that this stuff is going to work.
I had a client recently contact me to ask me my opinion on the new SEO work they were getting done. I had removed a link penalty for them a couple of years ago and thought I had educated them well on what type of SEO is acceptable. They interviewed several people for an in house SEO job and had me sit in on the interviews so that I could ask them questions to make sure that they were within Google's guidelines. They didn't have one candidate whom I felt understood Google's guidelines. They all wanted to guest post, but just do it on "authoritative sites". A little bit of guest posting is ok...but if that's your main SEO strategy, that's not good. I lost touch with this client until they just recently contacted me. They had hired a great guy who had "white hat" strategies and asked if I could review 150 links he built for them. That's a red flag, isn't it? Any time you can build 150 links you're probably crossing into unnatural territory. Well, these links were all comment spam and forum profile spam. I couldn't believe it.
I think though that the main problem is cost. Anyone who thoroughly understands the technical aspects of SEO and can legitimately build a site's traffic is going to cost $3000+ a month (perhaps less, depending on the niche). So, if I'm a small time small business and can't afford $3000+ a month, I'm going to be looking for the $500 a month type of package...and sadly, this is usually not going to move the needle much.

The problem with many websites is a lack of content.
The business owner doesn't want to write the content (can't write, doesn't have time, can't afford, etc.). The SEO has a hard time finding someone to write content that fits the business and satisfies the owner.
So, the SEO is left trying to promote and optimize a turd.
This is what creates demand for low quality SEO and links that are bought or provided but never earned.
Are businesses still hiring SEO that use strategies that could lead to a Google penalty?
Yes, as explained above.

Yes. Serious SEOs have the analytics to show business their worth, showing that SEO is more than just keyword research etc etc. However, many there has been a rise in small online business opening with little budget. Online start ups can be up and running with little budget. They are creating the demand for low quality SEO providing links but not earning them.

There is nothing to be done about it, but stay the course. Unfortunately their are no credentials for SEO as such. So anyone can claim to be an expert. Ironically it would be difficult to create a course as there are so many potential solutions given most sites have unique criteria.
All that said the new Search Analytics has given me hope in setting identifiable dashboards for clients - ie simply clicks per page. We are introducing that. Measurable and identifiable tangible results.
On worried - not at all, though some give SEO a bad name, good quality work leads to more work from word of mouth than is almost achievable...

What penalty would cause this traffic drop (Google Analytic Screenshot)
This ecommerce site was hit (mostly) slowly by updates but there is nothing in GWT. Below is the graph. Keep in mind that most of our traffic is return customers, so the drops don't look dramatic, but they are. "New Visitors" doesn't show the drop. This is a "Daily" Google Analytics setting. The drop I've circled is May 23-May 24, 2013. It was a huge hit in non-return customers. This graph is "Unique Visitors" I don't know why the "New Visitors" graph is not showing the dip Although we had some big drops, a lot of the drop was gradual. Any help in identifying what could be causing the problem is appreciated. ga.png

Has google done well with these search results?
I am struggling to grasp the new logic behind google, my understanding was that they wanted to return more related searches so that the search matched the results giving people exactly what they are looking for from trusted suppliers. However I work in the vacation rental niche and I have found that the individual long tail searches have started to become less valuable as they are no longer giving the exact property. Here is a screenshot of the top 10 results for the key phrase "10 bedroom villas in quinta do lago" Position 1 & 2 are good results and would be expected however the next 7 positions are completely not related to the search, yes it is quinta do lago. But I am looking specifically for a 10 bedroom villa, none of these pages offer 10 bedroom villas. I actually found my listing outside the top 20 and mine is a 10 bedroom villa in quinta do lago. Does anyone have anything that can enlighten me on this? Thanks Andy 0bqdRJi

Identifying a Negative SEO Campaign
Hi A friend/clients site has recently dropped 2-3 pages (from an average #2 - #3 position on page 1 over last few months) for a primary target keyword & suspects a Neg SEO campaign hence asked me to look into it. I checked on Removeem and the KW does not generate a red (or even a pink) result. I looked at Ahrefs & MajSEO, backlinks and referring domains have dropped over the period the KW dropped hence presume i can be sure its not a neg campaign since this would show an opposite pattern (as per articles like this: http://moz.com/blog/to-catch-a-spammer-uncovering-negative-seo ) ? Also site has very few site wide backlinks. The keyword is a 3 word phrase with 2 of those words being in the domain and brand name hence presume such kw are relatively safe from neg seo campaigns anyway I would have presumed the backlink/ref-domain drop may well explain the ranking drop but site still in first field of view of page 1 for the other keyphrases which 2 out of the 3 are words are same as effected keyphrase (and also in the domain/brand name) so would have thought these would have dropped too if a neg campaign. Also many of the anchor texts in the disapeared backlinks are for one of the other partial match variant keyphrases which are still top of page 1. Anchor text is at 4.35% for the effected kw according to MajSEO Im pretty confident from the above that i can conclude no negative seo campaign has occurred, nor other type of penalty and probably just a 'wobble' at Google that may well right itself shortly Would appreciate feedback though from others that im concluding correctly just for confirmation ? Many Thanks Dan

Penalty for all new sites on a domain?
Hi @all, a friend has an interesting problem. He got a manuel link penalty in the end of 2011...it is an old domain with domainpop >5000 but with a lot bad links (wigdet and banners and other seo domains, but nothing like scrapebox etc)...he lost most of the traffic a few days after the notification in WMT (unnatural links) and an other time after the first pinguin update in april´12. In the end of 2012 after deleting (or nofollowing) and disavow a lot of links google lifted the manuel penalty (WMT notification). But nothing happened after lifting, the rankings didn´t improve (after 4 months already!). Almost all money keywords aren´t in the top 100, no traffic increases and he has good content on this domain. We built a hand of new trust links to test some sites but nothing improved. We did in february a test and build a completely new site on this domain, it´s in the menu and got some internal links from content...We did it, because some sites which weren´t optimized before the penalty (no external backlinks) are still ranking on the first google site for small keywords. After a few days the new site started to rank with our keyword between 40-45. That was ok and as we expected. This site was ranking constantly there for almost 6 weeks and now its gone since ten days. We didn´t change anything. It´s the same phenomena like the old sites on this domain...the site doesnt even rank for the title! Could it still be an manuel penalty for the hole domain or what kind of reasons are possible? Looking forward for your ideas and hope you unterstand the problem! 😉 Thanks!!!

UK SEO Agency Recommendations
Hi, I am currently looking for a new SEO agency to manage strategies on 3 websites, budget of about £15k pm in total. Any recommendations would be really appreciated as trying to navigate through all the usual sales waffle and hollow promises of most SEO agencies is becoming rather difficult. Thanks

EXPERT CHALLENGE: What link building strategies do YOU think will work after the latest 3/29/2012 Google algorithm change?
FOR ALL SEO THOUGHT LEADERS...What link building strategies do YOU think will work after the latest 3/29/2012 Google algorithm change? NOTE: My hope is that the responses left on this thread will ultimately benefit all members of the community and give recognition to the true thought leaders within the SEO space. That being said, my challenge is a 2 part question: With the 80/20 rule in mind, and in light of recent algorithm changes, what would YOU focus most of your SEO budget on if you had to choose? Let's assume you're in a competitive market (ie #1-5 on page 1 has competitors with 20,000+ backlinks - all ranging from AC Rank 7 to 1). How would you split your total monthly SEO budget as a general rule? Ex) 60% link building / 10% onsite SEO / 10% Social Media / 20% content creation? I realize there are many "it depends" factors but please humor us anyways. Link building appears to have become harder and harder as google releases more and more algorithm changes. For link building, the only true white hat way of proactively generating links (that I know of) is creating high quality content that adds value to customers (ie infographics, videos, etc.), guest blogging, and Press Releases. The con to these tactics is that you are waiting for others to find and pick up your content which can take a VERY long time, so ROI is difficult to measure and justify to clients or C-level management. That being said, how are YOU allocating your link building budget? Are all of these proactive link building tactics a waste of time now? I've heard it couldn't hurt to still do some of these, but what are your thoughts and what is / isn't working for you? Here they are: A. Using spun articles edited by US based writers for guest blog content B. 301 Redirects C. Social bookmarking D. Signature links from Blog commenting E. Directory submissions F. Video Submissions G. Article Directory submissions H. Press release directory submissions I. Forum Profile Submissions J. Forum signature links K. RSS Feed submissions L. Link wheels M. Building links (using scrapebox, senukex, etc.) to pages linked to your money site N. Links from privately owned networks (I spoke to an SEO company that claims to have over 4000 unique domains which he uses to boost rankings for his clients) O. Buying Contextual Text Links All Expert opinions are welcomed and appreciated 🙂
