Domain switch planned - new domain accessible - until the switch: redirect from new to old domain with 307?

Hi there,
We are going to switch our local domain oldsite.at to newsite.com in November.
As our IT department wants to use the newsite.com already for email traffic till then, the domain newsite.com has to be accessible for public and currently shows the default Apache page without useful content. The old domain has quite some trust, the new domain is a first time registered domain (not known by search engines yet and no published anyhow). The domain was parked till now.
I am aware of the steps to take for the switch itself, but: **what to do with the newsite.com domain until everything is prepared for the switch? **I suppose users or search engines find the domain and as there is no useful information available it harms us already.
My idea was to 307 redirect newsite.com to the oldsite.at but the concern is that this causes problems as soon as we switch the domain and redirecting with 301 from oldsite.at to newsite.com?
Do you have any objections or other recommendations?

Thank you a lot for your input. I think our changes to brand and website will not be that significant as we do not change anything regarding our brand - it will remain the same. Same for the design and content.
I like the idea of collecting email addresses, but I am not sure what to tell them when we switch domains - as there will be nothing new, apart from the domain URL
The major issue what was bothering us was the fact that our main domain was country specific (.at) and we are an internationally operating company. That is why we planned to switch the main domain to a .com.
I will definitely follow your suggestions about some PR before the domain switch and get SEs to crawl the site before the switch.

Andy's suggestion would work just fine - but you might also consider building some kind of landing page for the new site to preview the change (if it won't wreck your brand launch strategy to do so). When we did the switch from seomoz.org to moz.com, we had a page up teasing the new brand and even collected email addresses for our community to be notified when the new site launched. Not only would this solve your current issue, it would also allow Google to start crawling your new site sooner. You could even do some PR to build some links to the new domain in advance of the switch!

Do you mean create a pre-launch page within your current site? I would prefer to do this myself, but if they are wanting to make use of the new domain to form an e-mail campaign landing page, then as long as it is done nicely, I can see no problem with this.

So you would suggest to create a simple HTML page for the new domain, noindex it and as soon as we move get the 301 in place? Your suggestion was my second option, but as I thought we are just moving the domain without changing too much of the content/design it is not worth creating a pre-launch page. But I definitely want to get rid of the default Apache page

There is no harm in using the new site as a pre-launch kind of thing, but I would be noindexing it until you are ready to make the switch. At that point, remove the noindex and ensure 301's are in place for the move. Without the noindex, it leaves it open for Google to pass judgement on - not something you want on a pretty empty page.
If your IT department just want to use it to form the basis of an e-mail campaign, then just don't try to do any SEO and you will be good. However, at least ensure the page is branded and has some content and a nice page for someone to land on. You don't want an empty Apache holding page with a sign-up form.

Going from 302 redirect to 301 redirect weeks after changing URL structure
I made a small change on an ecommerce site that had big impacts I didn't consider... About six weeks ago in an effort to clean up one of many SEO-related problems on an ecommerce site, I had a developer rewrite the URLs to replace underscores with hyphens and redirect all pages throughout the site to that page with the new URL structure. We didn't immediately update our sitemap to reflect the changes (bad!) and I just discovered all the redirects are 302s... Since these changes, most of the pages have a page authority of 1 and we have dropped several spots in organic search. If we were to setup 301 redirects for the pages that we changed the URL structure would there be any changes in organic search placement and page authority or is it too late?

Hi Moz, Here's more info on our problem, and thanks for reading! We’re trying to Create 301 redirects for 44 pages on site.com. We’re having trouble 301 redirecting these pages, possibly because they are AJAX and have hashbangs in the URLs. These are locations pages. The old locations URLs are in the following format: www.site.com/locations/#!new-york and the new URLs that we want to redirect to are in this format: www.site.com/locations/new-york We have not been able to create these redirects using Yoast WordPress SEO plugin v.1.5.3.2. The CMS is WordPress version 3.9.1 The reason we want to 301 redirect these pages is because we have created new pages to replace them, and we want to pass pagerank from the old pages to the new. A 301 redirect is the ideal way to pass pagerank. Examples of pages that are able to 301 redirect hashbang URLs include http://www.sherrilltree.com/Saddles#!Saddles and https://twitter.com/#!RobOusbey.

Manual action penalty revoked, rankings still low, if we create a new site can we use the old content?
Scenario:

A website that we manage was hit with a manual action penalty for unnatural incoming links (site-wide). The penalty was revoked in early March and we're still not seeing any of our main keywords rank high in Google (we are found on page 10 and beyond). Our traffic metrics from March 2014 (after the penalty was revoked) - July 2014 compared to November 2013 - March 2014 was very similar. Question: Since the website was hit with a manual action penalty for unnatural links, is the content affected as well? If we were to take the current website and move it to a new domain name (without 301 redirecting the old pages), would Google see it as a brand new website? We think it would be best to use brand new content but the financial costs associated are a large factor in the decision. It would be preferred to reuse the old content but has it already been tarnished?0 -

Hi, I just 301 redirected my 3 year old domain to a new domain which was created yesterday. Now i want to start link building to my new domain. Multi domain redirect to single domain
Hello, all SEOers. Today, I would like to get some ideas about handling multiple domains. I have a client who bought numerous domains under purpose of prevent abuse of their brand name and at the same time for future uses. This client bought more than 100 domains. Some domains are paused, parked, lived and redirected to other site. I don't worry too much of parked domains and paused domains. However, what I am worrying is that there are about 40 different domains are now redirected to single domain and meta refresh was used for redirections. As far as I know, this can raise red flag for Google. I asked clients to clean up unnecessary domains, yet they want to keep them all. So now I have to figure out how to handle all domains which are redirect to single domain. So far, I came up with following ideas. 1. Build gateway page which shows lists of my client sites and redirect all domains to gateway page. 2. Implement robots.txt file to all different domains 3. Delete the redirects and leave it as parked domains. Could anyone can share other ideas in order to handling current status? Please people, share your ideas for me.

Purchased a high ranking domain and want to transfer my site to the new domain
I recently purchased a highly ranked domain. The link profile is very good and I don't want to lose to many links however I want to transfer my site to that domain. What is the best way of doing this without losing the current rank on search engines? Also how much does the transfer of registrar information impact my SEO?

Redirecting One Page of Content on Domain A to Domain B
Let's say I have a nice page of content on Domain A, which is a strong domain. That page has a nice number of links from other websites and ranks on the first page of the SERPs for some good keywords. However, I would like to move that single page of content to Domain B using a 301 redirect. Domain B is a slightly weaker domain, however, it has better assets to monetize the traffic that visits this page of content. I expect that the rankings might slip down a few places but I am hoping that I will at least keep some of the credit for the inbound links from other websites. Has anyone ever done this? Did it work as you expected? Did the content hold its rankings after being moved? Any advice or philosophical opinions on this? Thank you!
