Would merging a site with strong DA with one that has weak DA be a smart move?
-
I am working on a project for a client that has two ecommerce sites each with several thousands of products.
Site A has a strong DA, is ranking well on Google for thousands of competitive keywords and generating high traffic and conversions. Site B has a poor DA, ranking poorly and much less traffic. We are considering the idea of merging the 5,000+ product pages from site B into site A.
How can we evaluate whether this would be a wise move with the least risk to site A?

Since DA and PA are rather logarithmic, if there is a small difference in DA or PA between the sites then merging them will be a nice benefit. If there is a big difference in DA and PA the merger will probably not make the stronger site more competitive.
An important thing to look at is the number of links that these two sites share. If they have very similar linking domains and linking pages then not much will be gained by the merger. If they have diverse and very different linking domains and linking pages that is when the most will be gained, based upon link metrics only.
Another important thing to consider is the traffic producing assets. Does the site being redirected have unique, substantive, well-written and well-ranking articles. If it has lots and they are supreme quality then it will be a good asset gain for the site that receives them.
Finally, will the site being 301ed contribute new products, new keyword reach, improved rankings. These are what might be improved on the weaker site if they are placed on the stronger site. Also, will the merger give current shoppers a greater selection of products, greater selection usually means larger average shopping carts.

DA would remain the same on Site A. However PA would be distributed between all of the new pages. Could you give the url to each site?

Mass HTTP to HTTPs move
Hi, As as part of an on-site SEO optimisation process, we've identified moving over from http to https - this is also in part to ensure our on-site forms are secure. In our industry our website has a high traffic volume (top 2 in the industry), we are concerned what impact the 301-redirecting from http to https would have on our organic traffic, both in terms of how Google would react to this mass-301 redirect plus the loss of 'search value' of inbound links. Privacy issues aside, would the minor quality-signal improvement be worth the move? Anyone have experience with such a move - was the outcome positive? Many thanks, Jason

Merging Domains
Hi, Everyone, My company is currently working with a client that has multiple websites and is interested in merging them into one. One is a primary corporate site, the other is a site for a single line of products. They obviously want to merge the product site into the corporate site. The interesting thing is that the product site outperforms the corporate site. It has the highest traffic, and it has far more links/linking domains, a higher domain authority (although only by two points), and much more social activity. However, their reasons for wanting to merge the two are completely valid - less management, URL would match print collateral, etc. They're asking our opinion on whether or not to move forward with the merger. I'm leaning toward no simply because of the fact that the site they want to merge is outperforming the other. I'm curious, though, to get some other opinions on this. Would a merger be worth the work in this case? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Best way to retain banklink values when moving site?
Hi all, I want to get some opinions on what the best practice is when transferring backlink values from an old site to a new one. On the old site, I currently have a product page and this particular product has multiple models all listed on the one singe page. However on the new site, every model of this particular product has its own page. These product model pages would have relatively similar content apart from several key details which differentiates the models. Firstly would you guys recommend this splitting of models of the same product to different pages? If so, my initial thought process is to 301 redirect the old product page to the new model page that is most popular, and adding rel canonical tags to the other model pages. Would you consider this best practice? Or are there better ways I can be doing this to retain backlink values without also getting penalised due to possible content duplication? Thanks! Jac - sent from my manager's account.

Cross links between sites
hi, We have several ecommerce sites and we cross linked 3 of them by mistake. We realize that the sites were linked through WMT, We have shut down 2 of the sites about 2 months ago, but WMT still shows the links coming from those 2 sites. how do we make sure that google will see the sites are shut down. Is there a better of way resolving this issue. We are no longer using those sites, so do not need them to be active. whats the best solution to show google that the links are no longer there. Crawler shows that it was able to crawl the site 45 days after it is shut down. thanks nick
