Woocommerce ULRs & SEO
-
My company is in the process of converting from a .net site to a wordpress site using Woocommerce. We are #1 in Google SEO ranking and have spent a lot of time getting to this point. My currents URL is /smithco.com/rotating-widgetsbecause of the way wordpress works - I'm going to have /product/ in the URL in the new siteThew new URL will be/smithco.com/product/rotating-widgetsShould I be worried about this ?thanks in advance

Well, you’re definitely going to lose your rankings if URLs are changed. Luckily, there’s such thing as 301 SEO redirects that let Google know your pages are being permanently moved to another addresses. As the result, your SEO rankings won’t be affected, even though URL structures will be altered (in your case by adding /product/ part).
If you’re interested in automated migration of your store, I’d recommend you using Cart2Cart. For a moderate additional price, it allows to migrate 301 SEO URLs of categories and products, as well as all your products, customers, orders, review etc automatically, securely and swiftly.
Good luck!

This plugin (http://litextension.com/seo-urls-migrations-plugins/woocommerce-seo-urls-plugin.html) perhaps helps to keep seo urls after converting from old cart to new site.

There's nothing to worry about in regards to having /product/ in the new URLs. However (with any site upgrade) you need to be sure to individually 301 redirect all the old pages to the matching new pages. Do you have a plan in place for that?

Have I chosen the wrong SEO consultant?
Hi all I've very recently started a small chimney sweeping business for which my friend has designed and built a website, kembersembers.co.uk. Not approaching this from a tech-savvy background I have learnt a lot over the past month but am still an utter novice and as such require some form of help to get me up and running. My main and immediate priority (sweeping season starts soon!) was to have it so when my company name, kembers embers, was googled I would come up at the top of the results. I understand this can take a little time but it has been a month now since I indexed and I have been told my domain authority is 0.1% so I have sought help. I don't want to sign up to a 3/6/12 month contract with a firm so I found an SEO consultant local to me who said they could spend a couple of hours doing the right things to hopefully help jump this initial hurdle. I parted with £120 for this which I deemed to be the going rate and they do/did seem honest and professional enough. Upon meeting the consultant he has since told me that he would like to set the website up under a Wordpress template and has cajouled me into changing my hosting over to one he uses also. He says it will take a couple of hours work to do this (there goes my £120) but without this he would hit walls which would be timely to get past and so will save me money in the long run. Do these kind of suggestions ring an alarm bell to anyone? It didn't seem right that a good SEO couldn't work with what I already have so it leads me to the question is this one to avoid? On a side note I have also received bad advice from friends of friends/family who claim to know SEO but have, for example, put me in the direction of a link scheme through fiverr.com which I understand may have done me more damage than good. I am now more aware of white hat vs black hat and wish to proceed with the development of my online presence in an ethical way growing organically. Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Would a free PDF download diminish SEO benefits of HTML content?
Dear readers, This post is a duplicate of one I just put up. Sorry about that. If you are interested in commenting or seeing other responses, please go to http://moz.com/community/q/would-a-free-pdf-download-diminish-seo-benefits-of-html-content. Thanks. Hello, I am doing SEO for a company that, as a sideline business, sells four books written by the principals; the content is directly relevant to the company's primary business focus. Book sales are a tiny fraction of our overall revenue, and we don't expect that to change, although we will continue to sell the books. In addition to selling them, we have decided to convert the books to HTML and post them for free on our website (laid out by chapter and section). The hope is that this will result in goodwill, links, traffic, and ultimately improved search rankings. My question: Would offering free PDF downloads of the books (in addition to posting the HTML content) diminish the SEO benefits of the HTML content? If we don't offer the PDF option, people would have to visit our site to read the content (unless they bought a hard copy). If visitors were able to download a free PDF, they wouldn't need to return to our site to read it. If our corporate clients (nearly all of our clients are corporations) could download a PDF, they could then post it on an intranet instead of posting a link to our site. In general, do you think a visitor would be less likely to link to our site if he or she were able to download the PDF? Or would the appeal of the PDF option make it more likely that people would visit and link to the site? Also, if we offer the PDF option, are there any SEO issues related to duplicate content? Finally, if we did offer the free PDF download, would you recommend that we ask for an email address before giving the PDF? Thank you very much!

A Bazaar 10 Days In WMT & Moz
Hey All, Just wondering if anyone else has experienced anything like this or has any idea what happen to one of my sites last week. I have a lot of question and unanswered weirdness that seems to be occurring in the data. It kind of plays out like this. Noticeable drop off in organic SE traffic WMT kicks out 70% of my structured schema data Moz drops DA to 14 from 17 Moz MR drops from 3.50 to 2.74 Total Indexed pages (as per SEOQuake tool bar) Drops from 500 to 224 All the images submitted via a sitemap have been unindexed according to WMT. This only a 3 month old web site with a minimal back linking profile, we're talking less than 100. No one has been working on the site, the only thing that has happen in the last month is blog post being posted. All unique content and well formatted. Then at the beginning of this week I saw traffic increasing again, and this was confirmed when WMT updated and I got my Moz update. All schema data back in WMT, with no acknowledgement of the drop; the graph just continues in a steady rise as tho nothing happened. Traffic back up to normal levels, as tho nothing happened. I have noticed a 100% increase in the amount of pages being blocked by robots.txt, I haven't changed it, nor has anyone else, it has been the same since the site was launched. I'm hoping that Moz will put the DA and MR back to where they were, and no damage will be done.\ But my question is, What the hell happened? It nearly wiped the site of the face off the earth for 10 days, how do I find out what did it, why and stop it from happening again? I have noticed the number of pages indexed by google, as quoted by SEOquake tool bar not WMT regularly jumps from anywhere from 200 to 500, Any ideas? I know their are many different elements at play here, where do I start, I can't sit back and hop it never happens again. Thank you to anyone that wants to roll their sleeves up and have ago at this one. Best, IAn

Local SEO Title-Tag Optimization
Hi Everyone! A bit of a greenhorn SEO here, and I'm trying to learn a bit more about some of the best practices in local SEO. I'm wondering if anyone can help me with the following scenario: Business: Dental Care & Surgery Location: Springfield IN Name: Springfield Dental Care Experts (example) Website: 18 content pages, pages dedicated to each service Since there are 18 pages to work with, there are plenty of places for us to mix-up the title tags. However, I am still unclear as to what the best way would be to do this. I understand that the Geo-modifiers should go at the front, and that the brand name is considered optional. Would tags such as this make sense? Springfield IN Dentist | Springfield Dental Care Experts Nearby town Mountainview IN Dental Care | Springfield Dental Care Experts Last question: The website has pages for each of the services offered by the dentist, ex: Dental Cleanings, Consultations, Fillings, Surgery, etc. Should each of the pages be included in the title tag? Springfield IN Dentist | Springfield Dental Care Experts - Dental Surgery My concern is that buy adding this, the title tag would be too long. Thank you for taking the time to read and respond!

Does it make any difference to your SEO if the homepage infrequently updates.
Hi everyone! Working on a site and the homepage hardly ever updates. Probably 3/4 times per year. The only page on the site which does is the blog page which updates 4 times per week. Is this a bad thing? Is there anything I should attempt to do?
