Rel="canonical" or text link?

Lets say I have a commercial website that nobody will link to so I create a non commercial website with some awesome content that is highly linkable.
I then get 30 - 40 quality links pointing to this site which I then either rel ="canonical" back to my main site to the page with the replica content or do I simply add a text link from the new site to the old sites homepage.
Which would benefit my commercial site most?
We are seeing the strategy of building a non commercial site for links becoming more and more popular. The second question is is it worth the effort for in effect one backlink?

I would try both and see what happens
The problem with rel canonical though, is that your not using it as intended and could get caught out or have the link devalued
I dont see any problem with a plain text link. personally i would KISS and use the text link
As to whether its worth it, it depends how good the linkbait is and how many links/power it gathers. The only way you can know is to try and then see the effect on your rankings.
You could certainly get more value than one link out of it though; link out to other articles that link back to your ecom site.
When you have this type of powerful 3rd party site, you can then start swapping links from your site in return for links from theirs to your ecommerce site

Quote + Link from Associated Press
So almost everyone here has talked about the marvel (for a small business like me, at least) that is HARO. Recently, I was quoted in a story that was written by the Associated Press, by responding to a HARO inquiry. (story resides on their site here in case you want to look). Are links from charities really better than 'normal' links.
Hi Guys. Just wondering about this idea that links from Charities are particularly good. I've heard people say that links from .org sites are particularly strong. But anyone can get a .org domain, it's just that charities tend to use them more often. Right? I just don't get the logic. Can anyone give more detail about this? Is it a myth? Is there quality info on this topic I can check out? We're working with several charities at the moment, and they all seem happy to blog and link to us...so I just wanted to know a little more. I am determining the value of links we get. Is a link on a subdomain less valuable vs one on the root domain? How less valuable would you consider a subdomain link? For example blog.site.com vs site.com/blog What other metrics would you take into consideration for the value of a subdomain link?

Internal Linking - Post links vs Side Bar Links behaving differently
Hi, I have a question regarding the internal linking behavior. My website is www.hindimeaning.com which is approx 3 years old. I have approx 450 posts. Now i have a widget on right sidebar "Popular posts". A widget below my posts "Related Posts". And a simple html CSS menu above the posts (I removed menu around 6 month before so currently it will not show.) I crawled my site with moz crawler (same are the result from google crawler as well) and it shows menus links as internal links. While sidebar widget "Popular posts" and "Related Posts" are not showing as internal links. If we talk theoretically what i learn till now is "every link on a page behaves as internal link". Then why the widget links are not showing as internal links. Thanks, Mahesh Kumar

Www.partybox.co.uk - Why cannot improve the position for "party supplies"
About 4 Months ago I submitted a Disavow file to Google for www.partybox.co.uk which seemed to have improved the position across many terms. However the main term "party supplies" I cannot get to rank any higher than page 6 in the UK. I have no penalties in webmaster tools. Should I see if I can collect anymore links that could be holding the website back for ranking for party supplies or what should i be looking to do ? The website ranks well for other terms that the home page is optimised for such as party stuff but not for party supplies any advice would be great thanks Adam

Best way to create deep links - Building links to inner pages
