Can ht access file affect page load times

We have a large and old site. As we've transition from one CMS to another, there's been a need for create 301 redirects using our ht access file.
I'm not a technical SEO person, but concerned that the size of our ht access file might be contributing source for long page download times.
Can large ht access files cause slow page load times? Or is the coding of the 301 redirect a cause for slow page downloads?

It definitely can, I saw once a site that had hundreds of redirects and it was definitely slowing the site down as they had to run through all the redirects first on the server side to see where the user should be forwarded to.

Yes. My brain has been in local SEO mode this week, and my first question should have been to ask about site size. If the file is huge, then it's a huge file. Huge and fast seldom go hand in hand.

Hi Austin,
The server needs to process the .htacess file to resolve those redirects so if there are a lot of them it would take more time, and latency will be increased. Don't you agree?

Yes, huge .htaccess files will delay your page load.
A couple of tips:
- File size: keep the number of rules to a minimum by using regular expressions.
- Execution: if it is applicable make .htaccess smarter by using the L tag to stop the process once a rule is matched.

The size of the htaccess file shouldn't really affect a page's load speed. With a 301 redirect, if someone goes to the new page, I don't see why it would load more slowly. If you went to the old page, you're adding on the time of the redirect. Since hopefully the old page shouldn't be rendering anything, it should be near instant.

Our website for my olansi company in London, China has hundreds of pages dedicated to every service we provide to China local areas. The total number of pages is approximately 100. Google caters pretty well for long-tail searches when it indexes all these pages, so we usually get a fair amount of traffic when this happens. Page not cached
Hi there, we uploaded a page but unfortunately didn't realise it had noindex,nofollow in the meta tags. Google had cached it then decached it (i guess thats possible) it seems? now it will not cache even though the correct meta tags have been put in and we have sent links to it internally and externally. Anyone know why this page isn't being cached, the internal link to it is on the homepage and that gets cached almost every day. I even submitted it to webmaster tools to index.

How to determine which pages are not indexed
Is there a way to determine which pages of a website are not being indexed by the search engines? I know Google Webmasters has a sitemap area where it tells you how many urls have been submitted and how many are indexed out of those submitted. However, it doesn't necessarily show which urls aren't being indexed.

Page feedback
We recently wrote a new website page to cover the direct mail services our organization offers. We kept the title tag to 70 characters, the meta description under 150 characters. H1 tag has what we feel is the most important term. If anyone out there has time to review & provide a little feedback, we'd really appreciate it. One bit of content I am contemplating is a short paragraph - What is Direct Mail Marketing? Literally providing a short definition of it. The page was activated last Thursday and showing up in some Google results on the 4th/5th page but I am thinking this is probably just a temporary bump for now. Anyway, thanks in advance for any advice!!!

Will a drop in indexed pages significantly affect Google rankings?
I am doing some research into why we were bumped from Google's first page into the 3rd, fourth and fifth pages in June of 2010. I always suspected Caffeine, but I just came across some data that indicates a drop in indexed pages from 510 in January of that year to 133 by June. I'm not sure what happened but I believe our blog pages were de-indexed somehow. What I want to know is could that significant drop in indexed pages have had an effect on our rankings at that time? We are back up to over 500 indexed pages, but have not fully recovered our first page positions.
