2 eCommerce stores that are identical 1 for US 1 for CA, what's the best way to SEO?
-
Hello everyone! I have an SEO question that I cannot solve given the parameters of the project, and I was wondering if someone could provide me with the next best alternative to my situation. Thank you in advance.
The problem:
Two eCommerce stores are completely identical (structure, products, descriptions, content) but they are on separate domains for currency and targeting purposes. www.website-can.com is for Canada and www.website-usa.com is for US. Due to exchange rate issues, we are unable to combine the 2 domains into 1 store and optimize.
What's been done?
I have optimized the Canadian store with unique meta titles and descriptions for every page and every product. However I have left the US store untouched. I would like to gain more visibility for the US Store but it is very difficult to create unique content considering the products are identical.
I have evaluated using canonicals but that would ask Google to only look at either the Canadian or US store, , correct me if i'm wrong.
I am looking for the next best solution given the challenges and I was wondering if someone could provide me with some ideas.

Thank you Gianluca! This was very helpful.

I disagree with cross domain canonical (see Moosa answer below).
Moreover, never canonicalize a URL if it has an hreflang implemented, because you will just cause big confusion for Google (what I must obey to?).
The hreflang solves the nearly duplicated content issues in International SEO, because currencies, measuring metrics, phone numbers, contact email are tiny but huge small things that make two URLs very different, as Google itself says in its hreflang help page https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/189077?hl=en

See my answer above and the one by Moosa below.
Cross canonical in International SEO is a no no in the 99% of the cases.

Hi Moosa,
Thank you for your input! Thank you for clarifying the repercussions of using canonicals in this situation.

If you have two different domain contact exact same things (products, descriptions, contact and more), there is no other way other than the possibilities mentioned by Dmitrii.
Even the canonical version will only allow Google to index one domain and remove other one from the index so from the SERP point of view you will only have one domain instead of two.
Hope this helps!

Hi Dmitri,
Thank you for your suggestions. With regards to the exchange rates, we have looked extensively into all the possible options and the conclusion is that we cannot combine the two stores under one domain. There are more details to this problem such as matching prices with local vendors etc. But thanks for your suggestion.
I will consider using canonical links as I do agree that is the next best alternative.

Hi there.
Due to exchange rate issues, we are unable to combine the 2 domains into 1 store and optimize.
I think that this is not good enough reason. There are somewhat easy ways to adjust price depending on where the product is being shipped to. So, I'd recommend to look into combining those two domains into one a little bit more.
Now, as for your situation. Since the websites are in the same language, and you pretty much is saying that you have to have exact content, then no, there is no any other way of handling this situation, rather than using canonical links.
So, to sum up:
- Combine those domains OR;
- Have completely different content OR;
- Use canonical links.
P.S. You might look into hreflang, but I don't think it'd help, since it's all in one language.
Cheers.

SEO friendly H1 tag with 2 text lines
Hi everyone, I am trying to add span tags in H1, break tag on 2 lines and style each line of H1 differently: Example: Line 1Line 2 I might add a smaller font for line 2 as well... Is this SEO friendly? Will crawlers read entire text or can interfere and block it. Thank you!

Best way to do site seals for clients to have on their sites
I am about to help release a product which also gives people a site seal for them to place on their website. Just like the geotrust, comodo, symantec, rapidssl and other web security providers do.

I have notices all these siteseals by these companies never have nofollow on their seals that link back to their websites. So i am wondering what is the best way to do this. Should i have a nofollow on the site seal that links back to domain or is it safe to not have the nofollow.
It wont be doing any keyword stuffing or anything, it will probly just have our domain in the link and that is all. The problem is too, we wont have any control of where customers place these site seals. From experience i would say they will mostly likely always be placed in the footer on every page of the clients website. I would like to hear any and all thoughts on this. As i can't get a proper answer anywhere i have asked.0 -
How to target slight variations in ecommerce store
Hi friends, I'm trying to target a variety of keywords for an e-commerce/woocommerce store. These keywords have slight differences, and I have a writer to come up with a paragraph or two of unique content for each SEO landing page. I plan on making them with WordPress pages, and linking them with in the content to other related blog posts and product categories. Would it be best to make individual landing pages for terms that vary like: mens wallets under $100 mens wallets under $50 mens wallets under $25 mens leather wallets qaulity mens wallets affordable mens wallets buy mens wallets online shop mens wallets online Should these each be individual pages? How should I link these to the main navigation? or Should I interlink them elsewhere?

HTML5: Changing 'section' content to be 'main' for better SEO relevance?
We received an HTML5 recommendation that we should change onpage text copy contained in 'section" to be listed in 'main' instead, because this is supposedly better for SEO. We're questioning the need to ask developers spend time on this purely for a perceived SEO benefit. Sure, maybe content in 'footer' may be seen as less relevant, but calling out 'section' as having less relevance than 'main'? Yes, it's true that engines evaluate where onpage content is located, but this level of granular focus seems unnecessary. That being said, more than happy to be corrected if there is actually a benefit. On a side note, 'main' isn't supported by older versions of IE and could cause browser incompatibilities (http://caniuse.com/#feat=html5semantic). Would love to hear others' feedback about this - thanks! 🙂

Best way to noindex an image?
Hi all, A client wanted a few pages noindexed, which was no problem using the meta robots noindex tag. However they now want associated images removed, some of which still appear on pages that they still want indexed. I added the images to their robots.txt file a few weeks ago (probably over a month ago actually) but they're all still showing when you do an image search. What's the best way to noindex them for good, and how do I go about implementing it? Many thanks, Steve

Best E-commerce CMS from a SEO perspective
Hello fellow mozzers, I have a lot of experience with Magento and a little bit of experience with Prestashop and i am quite aware of their strengths and weaknesses regarding SEO. I was wondering which E-commerce CMS is the best for SEO. I am talking about the CMS as you download it. There are hundreds of plugins for the popular systems which improve their SEO power tremendously, but i'm interested in which CMS is the best right out-of-the-box. Let me know what you think and why you think so. Thanks in advance 🙂

Maintaining SEO with Ecommerce Search Refinement
Hey Everyone, i have an interesting scenario I'd appreciate some feedback on. I'm working on restructuring a client site for a store design, and he had previously built a bunch of landing pages mostly for SEO value- some of them aren't even accessible from the main nav and contain a lot of long-tail type targets. These pages are generating organic traffic but the whole thing is pretty not user-friendly because it's cumbersome to drill down into specific categories (that many of the landing pages fulfill) without going through 3 or 4 pages to get there. For example, if I want to buy orange shoes, i can see specific kinds of orange shoes, but not ALL the orange shoes, even though there is an SEO page for orange shoes that is otherwise inaccessible from the main navigation. If that wasn't too confusing, essentially the usability solution to this is implementing some search refinement so that the specific sub categories can be drilled into easily with less steps. My issue is that I'm hesitant to implement this even though I know it would be an overall benefit to the site, because the existence of these SEO pages and being wary of destroying the organic traffic they're already receiving. My plan was to see to it that the specific category pages are built with the necessary keywords and content to attract those organic visits, but I'm still nervous it might not be enough. Does anyone have any suggestions for this circumstance, but also just maximizing SEO efforts on a site with search refinement and how to minimize loss. From a usability standpoint, search refinement is great, but how do you counter the significant SEO risks that come with it? Thanks for your help!

Best way to host multiple sites for maximum seo
We have over 100 websites we built for clients that we currently host on 1 shared godaddy hosting account. They each have a link to us but since they are all under one shared account, we feel that we are not maximizing the inbound link potential. I've looked into c class hosting but found that either the ip's were flagged as spam, or they shared nameservers which defeats the purpose. I've also been told that since the c class ip's a hosting company gives to you are all owned by them, that also defeats the purpose. Anyone have any solutions besides opening 130 accounts with different hosting companies? Also, will it make any difference changing existing sites onto different hosts now or are they already tainted?
