Home page duplicate content...
-
Hello all!
I've just downloaded my first Moz crawl CSV and I noticed that the home page appears twice - one with an appending forward slash at the end:
http://www.example.com
http://www.example.com/For any of my product and category pages that encounter this problem - it's automatically resolved with a canonical tag. Should I create the same canonical tag for my home page?
rel="canonical" href="http://www.example.com" />

Hi Liam,
If you have a mix of slash and no-slash URL's, just make sure that they all forward correctly.
If you go to www.example.com/product/, does that forward correctly to www.example.com/product, or what does it do?
If you wish to PM me your URL, I will happily do a quick crawl to make sure there is nothing else that might cause you issues.

No problem Liam,
You can safely canonical your home page to itself. I've had 2 sites setup that way for a few years now.
Good luck,
Don

I didn't want to force the removal or the append of a forward slash site-wide because "most" URL's (around 5,000 of them) don't use forward slash (products, categories, pages etc) - but there's a few pages that are part of the CMS such as account, billing, shopping cart etc that do use an appending forward slash. I think I'm going to give the canonical tag a shot for now - I can't see there being any negatives of using it on the home page to point to itself - it's just I've not heard of many people have to use it on the home page!
EDIT: Interesting. I viewed the source of http://www.moz.com/? - to see if they were using a home page canonical tag, and they were!

HI Liam,
Yes you can fix this with a canonical tag or you can do a blanket fix that redirects all "/" urls to the non-slash version with .htaccess.
This should work in the .htaccess file
RewriteRule ^(.*)/$ /$1 [L,R=301]
Hope it helps,
Don

Hi Liam,
To enforce a no trailing slash policy sitewide, you need to do this in the .htaccess file. You do this by adding the following:
**`RewriteCond%{REQUEST_FILENAME}!-d RewriteRule^(.*)/$ /$1 [L,R=301]`** If you wanted to enforce a trailing slash policy, you would instead add this.
RewriteCond%{REQUEST_FILENAME}!-f RewriteRule^(.*[^/])$ /$1/[L,R=301]

Page content not being recognised?
I moved my website from Wix to Wordpress in May 2018. Since then, it's disappeared from Google searches. The site and pages are indexed, but no longer ranking. I've just started a Moz campaign, and most pages are being flagged as having "thin content" (50 words or less), when I know that there are 300+ words on most of the pages. Looking at the page source I find this bit of code: page contents Does this mean that Google is finding this and thinks that I have only two words (page contents) on the page? Or is this code to grab the page contents from somewhere else in the code? I'm completely lost with this and would appreciate any insight.

Landing page video scripts - duplicate content concerns
we are planning to create a series of short (<30 sec) videos for landing pages for our clients PPC campaigns. Since our clients all offer the same services (except in different geographical regions of the county) - we were planning to use the SAME script ( approx 85 words) with only the clients business name changed. Our question is : Would these videos be identified as 'duplicate content' - if we are only planning to use the videos on landing pages and only for PPC? -in other words are we in any danger of any kind of consequences from the engines for repeating script text across a series of landing pages featured only at PPC campaigns?

Duplicate Content Issues - Where to start???
Dear All I have recently joined a new company Just Go Holidays - www.justgoholidays.com I have used the SEO Moz tools (yesterday) to review the site and see that I have lots of duplicate content/pages and also lots of duplicate titles all of which I am looking to deal with. Lots of the duplicate pages appear to be surrounding, additional parameters that are used on our site to refine and or track various marketing campaigns. I have therefore been into Google Webmaster Tools and defined each of these parameters. I have also built a new XML sitemap and submitted that too. It looks as is we have two versions of the site, one being at www.justgoholidays.com and the other without the www It appears that there are no redirects from the latter to the former, do I need to use 301's here or is it ok to use canonicalisation instead? Any thoughts on an action plan to try to address these issues in the right order and the right way would be very gratefully received as I am feeling a little overwhelmed at the moment. (we also use a CMS system that is not particularly friendly and I think I will have to go directly to the developers to make lots of the required changes which is sure to cost - therefore really don't want to get this wrong) All the best Matt

Are recipes excluded from duplicate content?
Does anyone know how recipes are treated by search engines? For example, I know press releases are expected to have lots of duplicates out there so they aren't penalized. Does anyone know if recipes are treated the same way. For example, if you Google "three cheese beef pasta shells" you get the first two results with identical content.
