Is there an SEO advantage to blog content being a child of /blog/ rather than the homepage?
-
I'm working on a website where all the blog content is listed as separate pages from the homepage, eg:
www.domain.com/first-blog-post
www.domain.com/second-blog-postHowever, it would make my life easier if all blog content was listed under /blog/ so that I could analyse it better in Google Analytics. Eg I'd like it to be:
www.domain.com/blog/first-blog-post
www.domain.com/blog/second-blog-postThe developer is not keen because it would create extra work for him, and he's also said it's a bad idea from an SEO point of view. But is this the case? Presumably with 301s in place it wouldn't make a difference?
Thanks for your help!

While I agree with the concept of Danny's answer (the farther content is from the root the lower the possibility of ranking) - there is no relationship between the depth of an article & the structure of the url.
To put it extreme - a url like mydomain.com/folder/subfolder/subsubfolder/page could be at 1 click from the homepage & a url like mydomain.com/page could be at 5 clicks from the homepage.
I would migrate to the structure you propose:domain.com/blog/post.htm, mainly because it's easier for reporting purposes. You can find an interesting article from Bruce Clay here on why it's good to have a well structured url: http://www.bruceclay.com/blog/structured-urls/

A small amount of Page Rank will be lost for each extra level the page is from the root domain.
So, there may be a small advantage in using the format www.domain.com/first-blog-post as opposed to www.domain.com/blog/first-blog-post
The effect is likely to be more noticeable if the home page of the site is the page with most link authority

What is the process for allowing someone to publish a blog post on another site? (duplicate content issue?)
I have a client who allowed a related business to use a blog post from my clients site and reposted to the related businesses site. The problem is the post was copied word for word. There is an introduction and a link back to the website but not to the post itself. I now manage the related business as well. So I have creative control over both websites as well as SEO duties. What is the best practice for this type of blog post syndication? Can the content appear on both sites?

Spam pages / content created due to hack. 404 cleanup.
A hosting company's server was hacked and one of our customer's sites was injected with 7,000+ pages of fake, bogus, promotional content. Server was patched and spammy content removed from the server. Reviewing Google Webmaster's Tools we have all the hacked pages showing up as 404's and have a severe drop in impressions, rank and traffic. GWT also has 'Some manual actions apply to specific pages, sections, or links'... What do you recommend for: Cleaning up 404's to spammy pages? (I am not sure redirect to home page is a right thing to do - is it?) Cleaning up links that were created off site to the spam pages Getting rank bank // what would you do in addition to the above?

Duplicate Content Caused By Blog Filters
We are getting some duplicate content warnings based on our blog. Canonical URL's can work for some of the pages, but most of the duplicate content is caused by blog posts appearing on more than 1 URL. What is the best way to fix this?

Adding Wordpress On Separate Server w/ subdomain = SEO Issues?
I have a client that wants to setup wordpress for their business site. However, they are really concerned about the load time a wordpress install creates on their site in the root. So, they want to setup wordpress with a sub-domain on a separate server. For example: abc.domain.com As far as SEO is concerned with the main site, what are the advantages and disadvantages for using a separate server w/ subdomain?

Minimum # of words on a homepage?
When I design sites for clients I try to keep the homepage clean and simple. As a result, I usually end up with very little actual content. For SEO purposes. What is the minimum # of words that I should have on any given homepage to avoid being penalized by Google? Does it have to be at least 150 or something like that? Even though my internal pages have plenty? thanks, Martin

Www/nonwww .co.uk/.com
When I started SEO - I didn't really know what I was doing (still don't!) Just wondering if anyone can help me with this small problem. I now understand that I basically have 4 URLs www.ablemagazine.com (Page Authority: 38/100) www.ablemagazine.co.uk (Page Authority: 47/100) ablemagazine.com (Page Authority: 3/100) ablemagazine.co.uk (Page Authority: 51/100) What should be configuration be to ensure I'm not loosing masses amounts of linkjuice? At the moment I have ablemagazine.co.uk set as my default domain in webmaster tools. www.ablemagazine.com www.ablemagazine.co.uk and ablemagazine.com all 301 redirect here (I think)
