Substantial position drop? - Urgent
-
Have been looking at WMT and discovered that on 10 October there was substantial average position drop, from around 14 to 20.
Does anyone have any ideas why this may have happened? As far as I know there's nothing that we have done could have impacted.

Hi,
Do you have both http and https active on the site? You can use something like siteliner.com to check this. I've noticed rankings, clicks and impressions drop off in Webmaster tools on a client site before, and it was actually just registering on the http webmaster tools property instead of https, due to a change made by the developers. Has your traffic also dropped off in Google Analytics on the same day? Or has it remained the same? I notice you say that orders dropped off also, but if traffic hasn't, I'd investigate any dev changes which might have occurred and test through your order process in different browsers/setups. You could also segment your Google Analytics data by browser/OS and check conversions, compared with the previous period, to see if any particular browser has stopped placing orders.
Is your website fairly new? I definitely notice more fluctuation in newer websites, and websites with less traffic.
Hope this helps,
Zoe -
I'd take a look at Analytics and compare the periods before and after the drops, looking at landing pages filtered by traffic medium organic. This should show you which pages have seen the biggest loss, which in turn should give you an idea of what keywords have been effected.
If there are just a few pages then run through a technical audit checklist on these pages to make sure no errors have been introduced - for example a page hasn't accidentally been set to "no index" (I've seen it happen).
You could also compare average position of keywords between two periods in WMT to see where the biggest drops are.

I do have Moz Pro, however I won't necessarily be tracking the keywords/pages that is dropped off. At this stage I don't know which they are.
According to the last crawl there had been several substantial increases, I just don't know who to believe!
I've just had an idea I should be able to use a export from WMT and Excel with a few formulas.

Difficult really unless you already use something to track your keyword positions, such as Moz Pro or SEMrush.
-
There does seem to have been a traffic drop, or more specifically a drop in orders which would tie up nearly directly to that date.
How is the best way of comparing positions between two dates?
-
Have you double-checked the accuracy of this?
I would first look to see whether traffic has been impacted by the drop, and then go on to check my main keyword rankings. Then I would try to figure out which search queries and pages I've dropped position for, and see if I can spot any patterns.

Website redesign, some urls are no longer available. How do I mitigate ranking drops?
I am currently refreshing my WordPress business website. I used a theme that had a built in portfolio option. I wanted to strip down the bloat and move to something more simple to better articulate my message. Upon switching themes I will loose my urls for my portfolio projects. I should have never used this built in function but it did exactly what I needed and wanted here is an example. http://silvernailwebdesign.com/portfolio-view/central-jersey-claims-association-wordpress-consulting/ Now on my staging site these portfolio pieces have vanished and the urls are indexed with google. I could create posts and recreate the portfolio pieces however the problem with the url is the /portfolio-view/ portion. I cannot recreate the part of the url. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I receive some traffic through the portfolio pages but not much, however, I do not want to loose any traffic. I am looking for a strategy that will solve this url issue with WordPress. I have about 10 separate portfolio pages with this url issue.

Significant drop in web rankings
We have two websites and last week we had a significant drop in search engine rankings. Some of these search rankings we have been top 3 for the past 5 years and now we are not in the top 20. Last weekend we changed our hosting provider and IP addresses for the first time in over 7 years. Now is there a way we could work out if we have been hit by the latest Penguin update or if the change in hosting / IP has caused these drop in rankings? I would appreciate any thought or ideas at all.

Anyone Seen a Drop in Rankings from Article Links from Years Ago?
A client of mine did article marketing years ago with Ezine, PRlog, ArticlesBase, etc. Now those links are still linking to their domain. Do you think they'll see an increase in rankings from removing those links?

Losing Positions
HELP!!! after implementing some changes suggested by SEOMoz Pro the only changed is that i lost some very very very dear positions. I had expected that my website would raise in position due to the changes but in fact it lost some. I live in the netherlands so i use Google NL and Bing NL for rank tracking. For some specific keywords like: kamperen bij de boer, boerderijcampings, boerencampings, Vekabo Campings, minicampings, kampeerartikelen, boerencamping frankrijk i only lost positions and thus visitors. Some of the keywords lost about 9 positions. What am i doing wrong? I do everything SEOMoz suggested including changing 301 titles on my website due to titletags with more then 70 characters and the only thing that happens is losing positions? Duplicate content is no longer an issue. No errors were found what so ever and still in stead of improving the rankings the declined. Who can help me because this is not what i expected from this program.

Can you explain why the site is dropping off Google every other week?
Can anyone offer any insight into why since the Google Panda update www.bedandbreakfastsguide.com has been fluctuating on Google so much? One week it's ranked as it used to be, the next it's nowhere to be seen? If you take a look at the screenshot of our traffic, this is the traffic after 75% loss (dropped in two stages) you'll see we get traffic for a week and then nothing. This has been happening for months. Some points that might be involved: Around the same time the SEO guys suggested setting the canonical url to www.bedandbreakfastsguide.com (before there wasn't one so traffic was coming from www. and non-www). A lot of the original urls have been consolidated and rel="canonical" added throughout The "pages" of results all have had a rel="canonical" set to page 1 Could it be that the www is competing with the non-www despite the 301 redirects. We're doing everything we can to help this client (and have reduced their site errors from the millions to low tens-of-thousands) so it's not filling them with confidence when their site just keeps plumetting! What's also irritating/odd is that some of their competitors -who used to be ranked lower and have sites which contradict every rulebook still rank high. Hopefully you can spot something we've missed. Tim I8PNL
