We're planning a major website redevelopment - SEO Considerations?
-
We're currently planning a website rehaul, with a new site to be designed and implemented on our existing Drupal 7 platform.
I've outlined the following areas to consider:
- Listing out top content by traffic, conversions, ranking and bounce rates to ensure top content continues to get relevant links throughout site (in particular high internal PA links!).
- Maintaining a specific KW target for each page
- Ensuring on-page SEO guidelines remain (i.e. img alt tags, headings and page titles)
- Having a low page load speed
- Ensuring architecture of site is built around our keyword methodology
What else I need to be aware of?
I'm predicting a drop in traffic as this tends to follow redesigns but looking to make this as minimal as possible.

Try to isolate as many changes as possible.
Everyone wants to do a big splash relaunch, but unless you're a serious brand, you don't need to do some fancy huge explosive relaunch.
Each of these are big variables, and are best to not do all at once:
- Changing domain name
- Changing website design
- Changing website URL architecture
- Changing platform
The worst is when people try to do all of those at once! It seems that you're staying on Drupal. The above article mentioned by Dirk is very good.
A few things to always remember:
- Noindex/hide your development/staging site
- Always double check your robots.txt after launch
- Always double check your Meta Robots directive after launch
- Always 301 redirect page for page your important pages receiving links and traffic if those change
- Verify before and after everything in Analytics and Search Console
- Create a checklist of everything. Almost 100% of even the smartest people will miss at least one thing in a relaunch.
-
There is a very useful & detailed post on site migration on Moz - I used on two previous migrations and it worked great (no traffic drop at all) - check https://moz.com/blog/web-site-migration-guide-tips-for-seos

Phasing in new website on www2 domain - 301 plan
Hi, I work for a large company and we're planning to phase in a new website. The idea is to develop key journeys on the new site and serve them on a www2 domain, removing them from the old website which is served on the www domain. The reason for this is because the old website is over 2,000 pages, and the management want to see new, improved journeys sooner rather than later. So, rather than launching all new pages and journeys at the same time, which will take a long time to design and develop, key journeys will move across to the new site / design sooner and made available to visitors. Whilst the overall journey might be a bit disjointed in parts (i.e. sending people from old to new site, and vice versa) I can't see a better way of doing it... Once all new content is complete, 301s will be implemented from old content on www. to new content www2. Once the phasing is complete, and all new content is in place on www2, 301s will be implemented to point everything back to www. Does anybody see any problems with this approach? Or any ideas on how to better handle this situation? Thanks Mozzers!

Can't support IE 7,8,9, 10\. Can we redirect them to another page that's optimized for those browsers so that we can have our site work on modern browers while still providing a destination of IE browsers?
Hi, Our site can't support IE 7,8,9, 10. Can we redirect them to another page that's optimized for those browsers so that we can have our site work on modern broswers while still providing a destination of IE browsers? Would their be an SEO penalty? Thanks!

Best SEO practice for multiple languages in website
HI, We would like to include multiple languages for our global website. What's the best practice to gain from UI and SEO too. Can we have auto language choosing website as per browsing location? Or dedicated pages for important languages like www.website.com/de for German. If we go for latter, how about when users browsing beside language page as they will be usually in English

Django and SEO - Multicountry site - Is Django really SEO friendly?
Hi Everyone, Our client is requesting that we use Django for her project. I am really uneasy about this for several reasons. The client wants a multi-country site that is completely SEO friendly. I love Wordpress and if I had to do this project it would be a Wordpress site with WPML + Yoast plugins site. Questions Is Django SEO friendly and what "plugins" should I be using? Is there a multi-country plugin for Django that keeps or adds typical SEO features? Can you recommend any great articles? Any example sites would be GREATLY appreciated Thanks

Whats up with this website?
cybercig.co.uk Languishing around 150-200 in the rankings, very barely making it above 70. But also ranks for Refillable Electronic Cigarette on the first page. Any ideas whats happening? Not a huge amount of links but I'd have thought it would've been much higher. I'd love to know opinions 🙂

Website Is In Tables
Our website www.accupos.com is mainly created with TABLES, which I've heard is a practice from Neanderthal times. Nevertheless, it is my job as the new Dir. of Marketing to SEO the hell out of it. Would you recommend converting the ENTIRE website into Divs or changing the current Tables situation? Or is this not a big deal for SEO? The site APPEARS fine, but I want to get our keywords ranked as well as possible, putting my time in the most efficient places (like link building!). How much of a high priority might this Tables fix be? We are also running an AdWords campaign spending LOTS every month. Please Moz me! Derek
