Should I set paramters to maximize the number of producs on all category pages for a retail website?
-
We have a retail website with over 20K products and do many things to reduce duplicate content including canonicals & parameters. In setting up parameters in Google Search Console, we have told Google to ignore the option to list more products, so the category pages that are indexed have only the default 12 products on them.
I don’t want to create too much duplicate product content by doing this, but if there are only 12 products on a category page, the content is very thin Is it better to have as much product content as possible?
My question: Should we set the parameter to follow the default (12 products) or should set it to 200 so there are more products associated with the category page?

Hello Kory,
How many products per page are you showing visitors? 12? In my experience, shoppers prefer to see more products on fewer pages. The best user experience would be to see them all on one page with more products progressively loading onto the page as the user scrolls down. This would be a "View All" canonical situation, which Google suggests for fast-loading websites.
Since Magento isn't particularly fast, and because you have a very large catalog, I wouldn't advise a "View All Canonical" in your situation. However, you could certainly load more than 12 products per page. You could double that and cut in half the amount of paginated pages Googlebot has to load in order to find all of the products in each category.
Another thing I recommend is putting static category introduction content on the first page, but not on subsquent pages, and to customize the Title tag on all pages by adding in the page number. These two things cut down the duplicate content risks.
And of course keep rel next prev and your Noindex,Follow tags on paginated pages.
All set?

Aghi,
Thanks, We ended up keeping it to 12 products a page and going with rel="next" and rel="prev", and turning off cononicals

Hi,
It is always better to maintain integrity of your website by limiting the query parameters and avoiding duplicate content.
In your scenario it is always better to maintain 12 products with the default setting. If you go for other than this it will hurt your site rather then boost the things.

Product Page Links
I have a product category page at https://www.hurtlegear.com.au/s1000rr/ which currently has 38 products on it. Problem is, all the product titles start with the name of the text: "bmw s1000rr" (because that's what they are) - so that means there are 38 anchored internal links on that page, all starting with the same keyword. You can see how that might look to the Google crawler. Recently that page dropped from around 15 to outside the top 100, and Moz tells me that the page is keyword stuffed with "bmw s1000rr" (no suprise) so I'm guessing that may be the reason the page has disappeared out of the SERPs. I don't really want to change all the product titles (then they wouldn't make sense) so I'm just wondering if there is any way around this? Is there some way of telling Google that this is a product category page and therefore to ignore the anchor text in all of those product links? Can/should the links have some kind of markup on them? Or is the page beyond help? Basically I'm looking at a way of keeping the product titles as they are, but avoiding a page penalty from Google somehow. I'm a bit of a newbie, any suggestions would be most appreciated. Cheers, Graeme

Your thoughts on page navigation
Hi again SEOmoz community. What are your thoughts on mainpage navigation. How it should be handled? Scenario 1. - links to the main sections with a mouse rollover feature where it shows subsections of the main sections Scenario 2. - links to the main sections, but the subsections are hidden and only visible on the click Scenario 3. links to the main sections and subsections allways visible I would like to hear you oppinions on this. What did you find as the best featrue, or did you try to find someting new entirely. What do you think would be the best scenario SEO wise and in the light of keeping links on page in decent numbers 🙂 Imo, Scenario 2 is the option to go with. Tnx in advance for all your replys. Sincerely, sinisa

Why some pages are not indexed?
I have a furniture´s ecommerce. When searching for "site: movstore.com.br" returned 1080 results, but if I search for "site: movstore.com.br / Product" returned 1020 results. I mean, that 1080 indexed pages, 1020 are products pages and the other 60 pages are irrelevant. Where are the category pages? "site: movstore.com.br / Categories" - 0 results

Can I have a strong brand category page and a strong product page?
It seems Google base and other Comparison Shopping Engines like to see the brand in the product name. But, on my category page for that brand, website optimizer tells me including the brand name with each product is cannabilizes links. For example; I have a page for jewelerABC with 20 pieces of jewelry listed as well as original content about jewelerABC. I do not currently name these products as xyz by jewelerABC. This page comes up nicely in the serps. But in Google base The top listings for jewelry by jewelerABC seem to have every product named xyz by jewelerABC or JewelerABC xyzs. What is the best way to optimize.for both? Stephen
