Making people to submit a lots of data

Howdy Moz Community,
I'm working on a financial product and looking for best practises or case studies on how to make people submit lots of personal/sensitive data which are needed for making calculations. Do you have any technical, UX, CRO etc. experiences how to guide people through of that 10-20 minute long process?

Bryan, Chris thank you for your help! It ensured me that there's no golden rule for this problem. The problem is, that I'll need people to add quite boring data (e.g. demographics, car and real-estate conditions).
I'm considering to split it up somehow and slowly but surely make people submit all the needed data. Capturing an email address and then guide the users through a personalised program making them fill everything, seems reasonable.I was just surprised that I hardly found anything in this topic on the interwebs. Maybe I'll write one our of this case.

Great tips Bryan! The only thing I'd add to this is to be realistic about your sales funnel expectations and how you structure your site.
Almost nobody is going to spend 10 - 20 minutes submitting personal information (or even generic information for that matter) on their first visit. Tailor your landing pages toward new clients without completely neglecting the returning ones. Capture at least an email address from those interested new users then use a combination of quality content, social presence and email marketing to build that familiarity and rapport to a point where they're comfortable in giving you their personal info and they see the benefit behind it.
You can't just tell someone your product or service is good and expect them to believe it, you have to provide an environment where they can arrive at this conclusion by themselves.
A good example of this being Moz vs a small SEO website. You're far more likely to spend 20 minutes completing a survey and providing contact info for Moz than you are a small firm you've never heard of because they do this stuff very well.

No one can really answer a question like this without knowing more details about your product. However, generally speaking, I would say to try to do the following:
- Break the process up between at least several, related steps.
- Keep the design simple, and the clutter and/or extra content to a minimum during the process.
- The more a user can click rather than type, the better. Drop downs are generally preferable to text-input fields.
- Keep the design, headings, and placement of items consistent.
- Ensure that, if customers are inputting sensitive data, that the entire site or section is https (getting an SSL certification). That way their data will be secure.
- If you're worried that people may not be willing to spend 10-20 minutes, consider having a preliminary amount of data necessary for sign-up / login / etc. and then allow them to add more information before accessing the product directly.
These are just some general tips, but I hope they're helpful nonetheless.

Multi Step Form or Standard Form for Data Capture
We are redesigning our web site real estate (www.nyc-officespace-leader.com). A key component of the site is the property search form. Currently visitors completes 5 fields and properties that meet the criteria are displayed to the visitor. I have noticed that my leading competitors (www.42floors.com, www.squarefoot.com) use multi step forms that ask single questions of the visitors. In effect they are reducing complexity by asking a single question per form. However the visitor must complete additional forms. Before results are served, both competing sites require the visitor to release contact info. 42floors has a clever inducement for the visitor to release their info: "Their are 127 listings that haven't been posted yet, but are visible to members." Once the visitor releases info they get to view the listings. While this is somewhat coercive, I suspect it is effective in obtaining customer date. While I understand it may result in some visitors bouncing off the site, the form completions are extremely valuable. Currently we provide listings without requiring registration but obtain very little data about visitors. In New York City, there are so many commercial real estate sites that visitors have a tendency to bounce from one to another without leaving info or calling. Multi step forms would allow me to add questions that are highly pertinent. Like when do they need possession, how long a lease term. By being asked very specific, relevant questions I wonder if that would not in fact increase the likely hood of the visitor to release info Any advice?? I am attaching several of the forms in question. In the event that we proceed with a multi part form, their are certain services like Leadformly that integrate with Wordpress. Have you notice that more you spend on a Facebook boost, less you make?
On a Facebook page I manage it has been noticed or atleast argued that the more you spend on a boost for a specific day the less conversion it makes. for example: spending 10 euro/dollars on a boost would give: 160 likes, 6 comments, but by spending 40 euro/dollars would give nearly the same: 170 likes, 7 comments we have run this a few times with similar outcomes.. Any ideas or did you have a similar outcome?

What's the most effective web marketing tactic you've seen or used that very few people know about?
I wanted to start a thread to share some of the really cool marketing tactics I've seen on the web that I think few folks are using, AND ask the community here what you've seen, too! Some of my favorite undiscovered or less-used tactics include: Making smart use of bios for conferences, events, interviews, etc. where folks ask you or your team members for a "bio" and you get to control the links, link targets, and anchor text. This is super powerful in my experience, so long as you have a moderately strong profile or regular participation in this type of stuff. Price anchoring on conversion pages, e.g. http://www.trackur.com/options - note how they start with the highest price to help "anchor" the audience to bigger numbers. A great principle of psychology in action. Using re-marketing to draw people to content rather than just purchase/conversion pages. The effectiveness of these is, I've heard, dramatically higher than the usual re-marketing campaigns that take you to a squeeze or purchase page. I can't share the example I'm thinking of, unfortunately, but I'd urge you to try it! Get more social shares and clicks by SHARING MORE THAN ONCE! A lot of folks feel like they are burdening their audience on Twitter/Facebook/G+ or frustrating them if they post multiple times, when in fact, very, very few of your followers are online at any given time. I've tested this myself and I get almost no negative feedback but can triple or more the number of shares/+1s/likes/visits/etc I get just by sharing 2-3X! The key is not to be too repetitive or annoying, and to acknowledge past shares (at least for me). e.g. I'll say "my blog post from last night on XYZ" and get a ton more clicks. What are your favorites? Please share!

Does anyone have a form solution which would allow for specific website visitor information (keywords, path, etc...from Google Analytics), to be passed to a form submitted by that user which could be passed to a Zoho CRM lead record?

Improving data tables for Usability & SEO
I have some large html data tables that look horrible (see bottom of http://www.jwsuretybonds.com/surety-bonds/commercial-bonds/auto_dealer_bond.htm). To my surprise, heat map tests actually proved them to be useful in improving our conversion rates to get visitors to apply for the bond they need. We are looking at ways to better the user experience while still keeping the data visible to search spiders. One idea was to use a dropdown list to filter by states. With new web technologies, there must be a better way to utilize this data. What are some alternatives?

Google adsense to make money banner ads or text ads for revenue
Hi i am trying to increase my revenue on my site, and i am working with google adsense at the moment and would like some much needed advice. I am not sure what are better, text ads or image ads I have put some links below to show you different sections of my site so people can help me work out for those sections what is better image ads or text ads. also i would really love to know where i am going wrong with the google adsene and would like to know if i am displaying them in the right places. Recommendations for Books on Analytics, Ecommerce and Data Manipulation?
Having just moved into a position where an Ecommerce site is now a big part of my responsibilities I'm looking to get up to speed on the topic (been a while since I worked on a shop). Site is Magento based. I'd also like any recommended books on broader analytics and using/reporting data. Obviously finding books on these subjects isn't difficult, I'd just like mozers thoughts on any that are particularly good and more important still relevant ie fairly recently published. Quite broad topics these I know but open to any or all suggestions - however not too worried about covering wider SEO, more 'technical' guide style is what I'm interested in. Couldn't really find any threads on books in general so should be an interesting topic (I hope!) Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions.

Weeding out irrelevant analytical data to see truer conversion rates
Here is the scenario. We have many brick and mortar store locations as well as an ecommerce website. It's hard to get exact, but my estimates seem to be that approximately 1/3 of the visitors to our website are interested only in obtaining information about the brick and mortar store locations and not interested in ecommerce transactions. Of course this kills the conversion rate. We use google analytics and I'd like to somehow be able to quantify with more accuracy what the "real" conversion rate might be. Is there some method to weed out specific pages/traffic (like brick and mortar landing pages) from being taken into account when conv. rate is calculated? The number that matters for conv. rate of course is "visits" and not unique pageviews, so I'm not sure that really would do anything helpful. Any tips?
