Why has my home page replaced my sub-category page for set of keywords? Happened 2x in last 2 weeks for day or so only to fix itself. What is going on?
-
Today I noticed a really weird problem. Our LED Step Lights page (https://www.pegasuslighting.com/led-step-lights.html) has been replaced in the search results with our home page. See screenshot below.
As I started to research what was going on, I noticed that this same thing must have happened on January 26 and 27 because in my Analytics I can see that our LED Step Lights sub-cat page had a sudden drop in traffic on those two days only to bounce back again on the 28th. See screenshot below.
Our LED Step Lights page has had no changes in content, meta information, or anything in months. We have done no recent link building to this page in years.
I don't understand what is going on. This is a popular page for us generating decent traffic. I really don't understand what is going on or even how to try and resolve this problem.
I checked our Search Console. No messages. No manual web spam actions. Nothing to suggest that anything is going on except for the weird drops in traffic.
Has anyone ever seen this happen before? Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be going on?

This happens more than you'd think, and it can be frustrating. It can, on occasion, be a sign that Google is on the fence about your category page. In other words, it could signal quality issues, although that's not always the case.
Could you tell me what search you were running when this originally happened? There are ways to see how Google is viewing the pages on your site that match that search.

I checked this morning and our sub-cat page is back in the SERPs for appropriate keywords and our home page is gone. The SEO world is "normal" again.
I have attached 2 screenshots...1 shows the SERPs this morning and 1 shows that the organic traffic we are getting has already returned. We already have more visitors as of 745am ET then the past 2 days.
I understand a little volatility around a particular page while Google does "something" (for lack of a better word this early morning). Maybe pushing the page down while it "rechecks" things? But, to show the home page on Page 1 for these sets of keywords is strange. While I love our home page (smile) it really does not belong Page 1 for these keywords. Plus, to see this happen 2x in the last 2 weeks each time lasting 1-2 days. Never seen anything like this before.
Anyone else experience this?

Good morning,
Although you haven't changed anything, it's very likely google has changed how they interpret your info. How else could they keep the ever-changing landscape of SEO interesting and sometimes frustrating,
There looks to have been a google algorithm update in January and Yoast is saying they are seeing "a high correlation between the keyword(s) being the first word(s) of the slug (the URL) and the ranking" see: https://yoast.com/google-core-algorithm-update/. Google might be playing with results based on the more descriptive slug to see if leads to a higher CTR. When I look at the first 2 positions in the SERPS I see that pegasuslighting.com/led-step-lights.html ranks for 6 terms as of Jan 16th and pegasuslighting.com ranking for 497 terms, so although you might see some fluctuation over the next little bit I think your home will continue to dominate results.
Is anyone else noticing drops in organic traffic or weirdness in Analytics and have some theories?

Replace dynamic paramenter URLs with static Landing Page URL - faceted navigation
Hi there, got a quick question regarding faceted navigation. If a specific filter (facet) seems to be quite popular for visitors. Does it make sense to replace a dynamic URL e.x http://www.domain.com/pants.html?a_type=239 by a static, more SEO friendly URL e.x http://www.domain.com/pants/levis-pants.html by creating a proper landing page for it. I know, that it is nearly impossible to replace all variations of this parameter URLs by static ones but does it generally make sense to do this for the most popular facets choose by visitors. Or does this cause any issues? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance

301 redirect for page 2, page 3 etc of an article or feed
Hey guys, We're looking to move a blog feed we have to a new static URL page. We are using 301 redirects but I'm unsure of what to regarding page 2, page 3 etc. of the feed. How do I make sure those urls are being redirected as well? For example: Moving FloridaDentist.com/blog/dental-tips/ to a new page url FloridaDentist.com/dental-tips. So, we are using a 301 on that old url to the new one. My questions is what to do with the other pages like FloridaDentist.com/blog/dental-tips/page/3. How do we make sure that page is also 301'd to the new main url?

Fixing A Page Google Omits In Search
Hi, I have two pages ranking for the same keyword phrase. Unfortunately, the wrong page is ranking higher, and the other page, only ranks when you include the omitted results. When you have a page that only shows when its omitted, is that because the content is too similar in google's eyes? Could there be any other possible reason? The content really shouldn't be flagged as duplicate, but if this is the only reason, I can change it around some more. I'm just trying to figure out the root cause before I start messing with anything. Here are the two links, if that's necessary. http://www.kempruge.com/personal-injury/ http://www.kempruge.com/location/tampa/tampa-personal-injury-legal-attorneys/ Best, Ruben

15 Keywords but only 8 visible on the page?
Hi we launched our site in June this year built using DNN - I have just used Moz's On page Grader for several pages and whilst it shows the KW in the URL, Titles, Meta Description, ALt Tag, it also says that I have 15 KWs in the body of this particular page and yet when i eye ball the page it only shows 8. Is this because of the templated navigation of the site. ie this KW also shows in the nav structure of other pages that are listed in the left hand nav menu? If this is correct will Google think that I am stuffing my page with too many KWs? Any solutions? Thanks Ash

Should I replace underscores in page file names with hyphens?
Many of the 1000s of pages at our Web store that were established several years ago but still relevant today have underscores separating words in page file names. For example: http://www.audiobooksonline.com/whats_new_compact_disc_audiobooks_audio_books.html Should I replace the underscores with hyphens like this: http://www.audiobooksonline.com/whats-new-compact-disc-audiobooks-audio-books.html or should I duplicate pages with underscores using hyphens and have the older pages with underscores 304 re-directed to the new pages with hyphens?

Google is ranking the wrong page for the targeted keyword
I have two examples below where we want it to rank for the targeted page but google picked another page to rank instead. This is happening a lot on this site I just recently started to work on. Example 1 Googles Choice for key word Motorcycle Tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/cl/50/Tires-and-Wheels What we want Google to choice for Motorcycle Tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/49/-/181/Motorcycle-Tires Other pages about Motorcycle tires: http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/d/12/Motorcycle-Tires We even used the rel="canonical" for this url to point to our target page. http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/50/-/181/Motorcycle-Tires Example 2 ATV Tires We want this page to rank http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/c/43/81/165/ATV-Tires however google has decided to rank http://www.rockymountainatvmc.com/t/43/81/165/723/ATV-Tires-All that is acutally one folder under where we want it.
