Traffic Dropping To Website
-
Hi
In Google Analytics:
I have noticed up to 50% of traffic coming to the website drops off at the home page point,
and drops further from other pages on the site. I realise some may possibly say that this could be down to various factors such as server issues, poor web design, or the wrong traffic reaching the siteI have did corrected the following:
- There was an issue with there being www.domain.com and www.domain.com/home, Screaming Frog and Moz showed that these both had duplicate meta tagging issues. Initially I had created a separate page called 'home' to include in the main nav bar under the slider, but yesterday I replaced this page with a request in the functions.php to place 'home' in the nav bar as a redirect back to the home www.domain.com page. This works great. So I now have the following 301 permanent redirects: non-www to www resolve in the htaccess file, plus 2 permanent 301 redirects in the nav bar. I wonder if this is acceptable protocol re the nav bar redirects, and I wonder if you could possibly advise if the actions that I have taken will have any negative impact on the web seo, link structure, crawlability or indexing.
Thanks.

Hi Paul,
Thanks for responding. Each menu item links to its final destination. This is the functions.php code I have used on the Wordpress site which basically allows a 'Home' text to be clickable so users can go to the home page when they are at any page on the site:
// Filter wp_nav_menu() to add additional links and other output
function new_nav_menu_items($items) {
$homelink = '- [' . __('Home') . '](' . home_url( '/' ) . ')';
$items = $homelink . $items;
return $items;
}
add_filter( 'wp_nav_menu_items', 'new_nav_menu_items' );
?>
I haven't yet set up set up any crawler spam and ghost referrer spam filters for your site and Analytics. I do see 2 referring websites in Analytics that are not familiar to me.
Kind Regards.
- [' . __('Home') . '](' . home_url( '/' ) . ')';

To answer your specific questions - no, you should never have your own navigation links passing through redirects. And yes, having these redirects in your primary navigation is interfering with your site's ability to distribute its page rank properly.
From your mention of the functions.php file, I assume this is a WordPress-based site? If so, you have your home page set up incorrectly if it is requiring redirects. (When correctly set up, WordPress even automatically takes care of redirecting to whichever canonical version you have selected in your WP General Settings.) Because you have full control of your own navigation, each menu item should link directly to its final destination.
As far as having so much of your traffic bouncing from the home page... have you set up correct crawler spam and ghost referrer spam filters for your site and Analytics? If not, it's entirely likely that spam data is badly skewing and distorting your real data for your home page in particular. (Referrer and crawler spam is almost entirely bounce visits to the home page.)
Hope that helps?
Paul

Setting up analytics for a website redesign
Hey all, so in the past when I make changes to a site, I make the changes, review the analytics in the wake of the changes, analyze and go from there. Little things here and there, no biggie. With my new company, we're doing a full website redesign from scratch (Currently on Wordpress, moving to custom). They are asking me about analytics and reporting and I was hoping to get some insight here. When the new site is ready, they are launching it at www2.ourdomain.com and sending 25% of traffic to ourdomain.com to that with the other 75% going to www.ourdomain.com (current site). So two questions- how would you go about setting up analytics for that? And how do you ensure the www2 version doesn't get indexed but stay in Google's good graces? If you de-index your "home page" that 25% are seeing I can't imagine that's helpful for SEO. Hopefully that makes sense! Trying to look at how to A/B test to ensure the new site is working and converting before pushing all traffic to it.

Help, site traffic has dropped significantly since we changed from http to https
Heya, so I am just in charge of the content on the site, and the SEO content, not the actual back-end stuff. A little under 2 weeks ago we switched to https, and our site traffic has been down a lot ever since. When I SERP check our keywords, they don't seem to have dropped in rankings pages. Here is what I got when I asked our dev guy if 301 redirects were put in: I did not add any redirects so all of the content is accessible on both unless individual links get hardcoded one way or the other. The only thing in place is a Cloudflare plugin which rewrites links in cached pages to match the way its accessed, so if for example you access a page over https you don’t get the version cached with a bunch of http links since that will throw up mixed content warnings in the browser. Other than that WP mostly generates all its links to match whatever protocol you are accessing the current page with. We can make specific pages redirect one way or the other in the future if we want to though... As a startup, site traffic is a metric we track to gouge progress, and so I really need to get to the bottom of if it was the change from http to https that has causes the drop, and if so, what can we do about it? Also, in case it is relevant: the bounce rate is now sky high (ave. 15% to 64% this last week!) Any help is very welcome! Site: https://mobileday.com Thank you!

Best techniques for trying to rank a single page website?
I am new to SEO and am currently trying to market a single page website. Its proving to be hard. I have managed to get the site to page one for a few keywords and it is improving (upto page 2 for some desired keywords) but it seems to have stuck there for a few weeks now - with no movement. I am able to develop it if required. However I thought that I would just ask if there was anything that could give it a nudge without this? I have done on-site optimisation. As far as I'm aware that's about as good as it can be. So any advice?

Intuit Website Hosting - Stand-Alone Webite?
Hi all! My name is Yehuda and I'm new to this community. There's an issue i'm having trouble with: My site is hosted by Intuit Websites, and I use their Website Builder. Though it has its own domain name, it seems my "site" may just be a subdomain of their intuitwebsites.com website. I'm trying to figure out if my site is actually a stand-alone website, and what ramifications/issues there be in terms of bot crawling & SEO. Does anyone have a thought on this?

Wordpress drop down menu issue...
While I am tweaking my current site with getting rid of my footer links, my site will not allow a drop down menu for my service area parent page. It will do a drop down menu for any other tab. Could not find anything in a google search besides just link to parent for drop down... Any ideas?
