How many directories are too many directories?
-
Hello Moz World,
I wanted to get some perspective on this. How many directories are too many directories to list a website. And what is a good Page Rank for submission.
Thanks ahead of time for all of the awesome responses.

Thanks Kevin & Don! Your insights are very helpful. I was asking myself how much traffic would some of these "off the beaten path" directories generate, even if they had a high page rank, and if the effort was worth the reward. I think I will just list them on DMOZ and any niche specific directory my clients recommend. Thanks Again!

Don had a great answer on this. I focus on directories that have some sort of value to the end-user and any site just can't get listed (for the company I work for is industrial B2B). If it doesn't meet these two criteria, it's most likely spammy and not worth getting listed in. I wouldn't get hung up on a set number or a specific pagerank.

Hi Will,
I'm of 2 minds when it comes to directories. My general advice would be to ignore them all together, unless there are some very industry specific ones that make sense. I say general advice because the vast majority of industries I have researched have only 1 known good directory (Dmoz.org), the rest are at best, relic sites that have basically run their course in usefulness and give little to no value in terms of traffic or link juice. Why? because it is atypical for somebody to use anything other then Google / Yahoo / Bing / Baidu to find anything on the internet.
That being said, I do place some value on directories for some specific industries and lead generation. For example, in my current industry there is a site that has been around since the 90's and many people before the rise of search engine dominance found it as a great resource for finding business to business partnerships. Many of those people who got acclimated to the site are still working today and use it as their go to source for specific project requirements. In other words they have used it for so long and it has worked for so long they never found the need to branch out and rely on search engines. And in all honesty even Google would have a hard time returning pertinent results for lets say a rubber manufacturer who has experience with over molding fda approved buna-n rubber to an aluminum substrate. But the good directory sites can list those sorts of capabilities.
Because this is a public question I had to give both my opinions on directory sites. Again I wouldn't seek them out as any form of link building, but I also wouldn't ignore ones that seem capable of delivering either traffic or leads, I will say with the exception of Dmoz.org any of the good directories sites I have run across are very industry specific and they are certainly not free.
Hope that helps
Don

Adding a Directory to Website
Hiya! So we have an odd request and we wanted to see if want we want to do will add any SEO benefit. We operate a printing/design firm in Houston, Texas and have been thinking of adding a directory to our website. It would sit on our top level domain www.website.com/print-directory, it would much be a like a yelp directory listing all the print, design, and bindery shops all across the USA. We want to expand our footprint online and and to boost to our position in other cities. For example Yelp is always the top spot when you search for (CITY) + (PRINTING)/(DESIGN) the yelp directories pull up first. Now... i know why this is with their DA/UR off the charts. We have vendor that will provide all the info/data/images of all businesses in the USA something around 5K business so. The design will mesh with our current design and look seamless with the current design. The idea is that we would populate and optimize all the city pages for all those cities and provide content on each major city. So we can optimize with H tags, keywords and interlink all the other pages plus not to mention we have a great blog section and plan on interlink that throughout website. The catch would be..... is that we would put our listing first, on top of all those other local shops. Maybe we would do this for all of them but maybe a few of our target cities. We would use our addresses and nothing would be faked. URL Structure www.website.com/print-directory/austin-texas/printshops/ABCPrinter/ Questions Would this confuse Google and cause some issues with our current SERPS? We do very well in our home city and don't want to jeopardize all our hard work. Or real harm or benefit just seems to confusing people? Could we get penalized? Content would be unique (except listing information)

Search directories, are they worth it??
I pay Yahoo, sorry Aabaco.... a lot of money every year to be listed on all the little search directories. I'm told this helps my SEO efforts, but I don't see where? Is there a page on MOZ that would tell me this, I'm interested to know the truth about this? I'm kind of new to seo so please answer lightly... 🙂

Local Directories: What are the best practices for manually updating over 500 listings?
We are currently using an aggregator for a client, but we will be manually updating 5 different local directories that are not included in the distribution for over 500 locations. I am wondering if there are any local experts that have a set of best practices/processes for this type of scenario?

Preferred URL structure for directory pages?
Hi Moz-Mind, We've got a bunch of duplicate content issues in our directory of trucking-related businesses, caused by search terms that can appear in any order, (classic mistake). We're taking advantage of this our work on URLs to try to improve our URL structure, and I'm not sure which way I want to go. These are the options we're considering. What does the Moz-mind think of each of them? example.com/location-name/service-name example.com/service-name/location-name example.com/service-name-near-location-name For the moment location-name would be a city & state abbreviation, like atlanta-ga, (unless it's better to use something else). Since these are search URLs, it's also possible to add a distance restriction, and a keyword, to the search criteria. How do you suggest adding the distance restriction? example.com/service-name/location-name/50-miles example.com/service-name/within-50-miles/location-name example.com/service-name-within-50-miles-of-location-name And the keyword? example.com/service-name/location-name/keyword example.com/service-name/location-name/keyword/{actual-keyword} example.com/service-name-near-location-name/keyword Something else? I was leaning toward example.com/service-name/location-name/within-50-miles, but I thought of the /service-name-near-location-name/ and /service-name/within-50-miles-of/location-name options today and really like how they make sense both to computers and to people, not unlike example.com/GA/atlanta/service-name/50 I'm looking forward to hearing what the community thinks. There must be an established best practice for directories, but if it's kind of ugly I'd like to find an even better way, if possible. Thanks, John

Has anyone ever used a specific page (instead of home page) when building links in directories?
Instead of the home page, have you ever done (domain)/page-1 for the URL in directories? I figured this would be a good way to build some page authority up for deeper pages for small businesses that can't seem to garner any attention with content / links. BTW, these directories are not considered spam directories. Thanks, Cole

Adding each location business info to directories. There are same services and everything for each location. Should we keep the same description for all listings or different for each location?
Should we indicate Home Page URL (with 800 number, no address in footer) or location URL?0
