Scraper Advice
-
Hi all,
I know we all deal with scraped content issues. I have one I could use advice on. I found a site that is posting our blog content on their site verbatim, including the links I added to the posts (which is good) and mention our blog home page in a right sidebar beside the content (also good). However, they aren't linking to the specific posts from their copied versions anywhere and their pages canonical back to their versions, not mine.
It's not a very spammy site and has a decent domain authority (though significantly lower than our own). I did a long tail search related to one of posts after discovering it, however, and found their version was outranking the original. I know I can report this one via Webmaster Tools.
I wanted to get your opinion on whether asking them to add a link back to the original post on our site might be sufficient, or do I need to ask for that plus a canonical tag update? I know getting both is ideal, but the links and relationship could be valuable, so I want to leave this particular bridge in tact if I can.
Just trying to decide if I take an "either/or" approach to my request when I mention those two action items, or if I need be a little firmer and ask them to do both and potentially risk losing a potential outlet for future content?
Thanks,
Andrew

Don't second-guess on that myth that scrapers can't hurt you. These guys are outranking you right now with your own content. Proof enough to me that Kissmetrics needs to take notice and pull down false information. Also, this is another clear example of Google not knowing how poorly their systsem is working and they know not that they know not.
Google would not be getting millions of DMCAs per week if they were right about this. I've sent them hundreds.

Normally, I'd take that harder approach as well. If this was a spammy site that was doing nothing but scraping, I'd definitely be going that route. I still might. I'm trying to see the best way to walk a fine line.
I think #2 on Kissmetrics' 3 Myths About Duplicate Content has me second-guessing myself. If it wasn't a somewhat decent site that has potential to help in terms of referral traffic, it would be a no-brainer.
For the outranking issue, it's weird. For the main term we target, we are top 3 in the SERPs. Change it a little bit and they're ranking, which is the only instance of that I found when testing all posts (5 total).
Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate it.

What you do on your first step will set the tone for how they treat you in the future. So, if you are too liberal now, it will be hard to reign them in and they could start grabbing everything that you own.
If this was my site being grabbed, I would be contacting them to take the content down and be prepared to follow up with an attorney who is already in place for this type of situation, being ready to submit DMCA to Google, Adsense, hosting and more.
If you feel that the relationship could be valuable and have a different philosophy than mine, then I would at minimum insist on the rel=canonical pointing back to the source of the content on my website - and I would require them to ask before they use anything in the future. The fact that they are outranking you with your own content should have you shaking in your boots over this potential relationship. You are making deals with Goliath.

In the middle of a site redesign, looking for some advice at a glance.
Greetings, hope you're doing awesome today! I have a current client in an industry niche, I got them to do a site redesign, based on the many factors needing correction on the current site. I have a good 40 some items still to address, from my frequent manual site audit / proofreading. Reason I am here, is that I'm seeking fresh eyes to address anything I may have missed, of course at a glance, I don't expect a site audit, but do have some concerns about url structure and page titles as you move from category to category. It's a bigcommerce site, so some things that are normal SEO actions aren't as simply implemented. Also, since this is a client, and I'm sure they have competitors using sites like this, I need to keep the url private as well as any specifics, of course for readers in the future, I can or you can mention general issues and solutions. Thank you and please, if interested, will send url at request, can send both the live and dev urls.

2 pages ranking for same keyword.. Need some advice on what to do.
Here's my question. When I first started my website we started Using keyword anchor building links To my homepage . Over the years Our business has expanded to more than just baby headbands. I now have a baby headband page. When tracking my rankings. I sometimes see Both pages in Google for the same keyword. Other days I do not see both of them. My question is Should I continue building links and keyword anchor text for the home page Or should I switch them and start building keyword-rich anchor text for my baby headband page. I'm just wondering if the Search engine is confused by the two. When searching for the keyword baby headbands. I will sometimes show up for eight and nine. 8 is my home page and 9 is for the baby headband page. I have always shown up for the keyword "baby Headbands" for my home page.

Advice on whether we 301 redirect a page or update existing page?
Hi guys, any advice would be really appreciated. We have an existing page that ranks well for 'red widgets'. The page isn't monetised right now, but we're bringing in a new product onto our site that we optimised for 'blue widgets'. Unfortunately, not enough research was done for this page and we've now realised that consumers actually search for 'red widgets' when looking for the product we're creating as 'blue widgets'. The problem with this is that the 'red widgets' page is in a completely different category of our site than what it needs to be (it needs to be with 'blue widgets'). So, my question is; Should we do a 301 redirect from our 'red-widgets' page to our 'blue-widgets' page which we want to update and optimise the content on there for 'red-widgets'. Or, should we update the existing red-widgets page to have the right products and content on there, even thought it is in the wrong place of our site and users could get confused as to why they are there. If we do a 301 redirect to our new page, will we lose our rankings and have to start again, or is there a better way around this? Thanks! Dave

Canonical Advice - ?
Hi everyone, I have a bit of problem with duplicate content on a newly launched site and looking for some advice on which pages to canonicalize. Our legacy site had product "information" pages that now 301 to new product information pages. The reason for the legacy having these pages (instead of pages where you can purchase) is because we used our vendors "cart link", which was an iframe inside the website. So in order to get ranked for these products, we created these pages, that had links to the frame where they could buy. The strategy worked, and we got ranked for our products. Now with the new site, we have those same product information pages, but when you click the link to buy, it goes to a page which now is on our actual site, where you can make the purchase, but this page contains the same basic information, though it looks very different. So my question --- the product "information" pages, are the new 301 homes and are the pages with the rank. The purchase pages are new and have no rank, but are essentially duplicate content. Should I put the canonical link element on the purchase page and tell Google to regard the information pages since those are ranked? It just seems weird to me to direct Google away from the place where people can purchase, however, the purchase pages aren't nearly as "pretty" as the information pages are, and wouldn't be the greatest landing pages. We have an automotive site, and the purchase page you have to enter vehicle information. The information page is nicer, and if the visitor is interested, its just one click to get to that page to buy. What to do here? I am fairly new to Moz, and I couldn't determine whether I am permitted to include an example link from our site of what I am referring to. Is that permitted? Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Advice on promoting a blog
Hi i am working on a new blog and would like to know if there are any sites where i can publish part of the new blog to gain traffic to my main blog. What i am looking at is, to publish part of a news story and then have people come to my main site after reading some of the new story. I have come across accidentally a couple over a year ago but cannot locate them now. I want people to be able to come to my site and read the whole story and then hopefully tell their friends. Link Building Advice
Hi Everyone, I have just joined the community and am looking for some help regards Offsite SEO and Link Building. I have done some basic SEO on my website 'Marketing Quotes' Added to web directories (although I am told they do not carry much weight) I have written content and articles around them (on ezine, squidoo etc.) I have written unique content for the site I have done guest posting on blogs Not sure what to do next though for high power links. I did notice a Q&A on contacting webmasters and asking for links (after building a relationship) but wondered if there was anything (offsite wise) that I have missed out? Appreciate any advice. Wordpress SEO Errors - Any advice?
Hi all! My site is on the WP platform and I'm having a crawl error. Wondering if you guys could possibly help me figure out what's going on? I have a good number of 404 errors where the links seems to be appended and I can't figure out why. I've scoured my individual posts and cannot seem to find the broken link? The crawl error looks a bit like this: http://preciousthingsphotography.com/2007/12/10/chicago-family-photographer-welcome/http:%2F%2Fpreciousthingsphotography.com%2F2007%2F12%2F10%2Fchicago-family-photographer-welcome%2F You can see that my original link is somehow being doubled with the slashes being replaced? This is happening on all of my posts. Any ideas as to what could be going on? Thanks so much!
