How Important is it to Use Keywords in the URL
-
I wanted to know how important this measure is on rankings.
For example if I have pages named "chair.html" or "sofa.html"
and I wanted to rank for the term seagrass chair or rattan sofa..
Should I start creating new pages with the targeted keywords "seagrass-chair.html" and just copy everything from the old page to the new and setup the 301 redirects??
Will this hurt my SEO rankings in the short term? I have over 40 pages I would have to rename and redirect if doing so would really help in the long run.
Appreciate your input.

I can definitely say that keywords in a URL can make a difference in a competitive vertical. We have an article on site with a slug of "best-place-to-buy-a-mac-online" and you get one guess what keywords it ranks for.
That said, if you're talking about changing URLs sitewide, I would be very cautious. Maybe make changes to one or two pages to start and watch them for a few weeks.

I've just checked your website, and it does look fine to me. You have a clear navigation and all of that. I wouldn't worry about changing URLs (Google would still index them) But just double check with search console if Google has indexed all of your pages.
In regards to the seagrass.html vs seagrass-furniture.html, I wouldn't worry about changing it, because Google understands that your website is about selling furniture, therefore it realises that seagrass.html has to do with furniture. When you change your pages and put 301 redirects you loose a bit of link juice, so if I were you I wouldn't worry too much about your URL situation (it's a minor ranking factor) and would focus on link building and on-site optimisation.
Hioe that helps

It is an ecommerce site (yahoo) so all the urls are wickerparadise.com/ (whatever the id of the page is called) .html
The page with all of the chairs would be "x-chairs" x being the specific type of chair.
I have a main category page: http://www.wickerparadise.com/seagrass.html
Now this page has everything in the seagrass furniture category. I believe we made a mistake in calling this seagrass.html vs. seagrass-furniture.html (since we want to rank high for seagrass furniture and this page has more content then a specific item page)
Should I go ahead with renaming the urls and doing the redirects on a massive scale (30+ at a time) ??

Hi,
I would say that it is beneficial to have a clear architecture/structure for users and search engine spiders to navigate across your website. If you'd decide to change the structure, I would suggest using something like this: www.yourwebsite.com/chairs/seagrass-chair/.
When you say that you have a "chair" page, does that mean that all of your products are listed on that single page or do you have separate products pages?

What sources do you use to keep on top of SEO news?
I want to try building an RSS feed of SEO news... but not wanting to find myself drowning in materials As such, looking for a short list of recommendations for keeping on top of SEO developments – the impetus is that I'm still discovering changes that happened 2, 3, even 5 years ago, and I want to try and catch these things as they happen. Thinking something actually from Google may be on the list, but some of these sources are pretty on top of things! Seroundtable.com also comes to mind. But what do you use to keep informed? Thanks 🙂

Unique page URLs and SEO titles
www.heartwavemedia.com / Wordpress / All in One SEO pack I understand Google values unique titles and content but I'm unclear as to the difference between changing the page url slug and the seo title. For example: I have an about page with the url "www.heartwavemedia.com/about" and the SEO title San Francisco Video Production | Heartwave Media | About I've noticed some of my competitors using url structures more like "www.competitor.com/san-francisco-video-production-about" Would it be wise to follow their lead? Will my landing page rank higher if each subsequent page uses similar keyword packed, long tail url? Or is that considered black hat? If advisable, would a url structure that includes "san-francisco-video-production-_____" be seen as being to similar even if it varies by one word at the end? Furthermore, will I be penalized for using similar SEO descriptions ie. "San Francisco Video Production | Heartwave Media | Portfolio" and San Francisco Video Production | Heartwave Media | Contact" or is the difference of one word "portfolio" and "contact" sufficient to read as unique? Finally...am I making any sense? Any and all thoughts appreciated...

Website slipped for particular keyword this year
www.schupepetents.co.nz I am webmaster for this site which slipped in rankings around 18/1/13. It was doing really well for keyword "marquee hire" ranking 6-8 for google.co.nz. It is now ranked about 30. Background. It has been ranked well for keyword for about 3 years. From what I can see there was a few websites that tumbled around this time. The website has been completely redone to a wordpress site this was in December last year. The switch was done before putting in 301 re directs to preserve internal page rank. As a result the internal page rank of pages has had to start again! Three things from online research into what has potentially affected this:
White Hat / Black Hat SEO | | chopchop
1. Lack of website substance. As website has been redone it has lost Google "esteem" (lack of internal pages PR). But the time that it dropped was a long time after the site redesign.
2. Possible penalty for too high proportion of links from directory websites. Heard some whispers from forums that this had happened. But links are not just from directories.
3. Too many links with specific keyword (marquee hire) for junk sites. This is possibly true but why the drop at that time when no one else experienced this. Also we hired a company mid last year who link bombed using "marquee hire" and a couple other keywords. Moz seems to be very happy with the website!! Good link scores and on-page optimisation is great. Wondering what has happened?!0 -
Include placename in URL, or not?
Hi Mozzers, I'm wondering whether to put placename in URL or not. This is for a hotel so it's very focused on the county. I have loads of sub pages along the lines of www.hotelname.com/short-breaks-somerset www.hotelname.com/eat-out-somerset and so on but I was wondering whether that placename element would help or hinder. For example, may want to rank for short breaks in other searches (not just those seeking short breaks in Somerset) and was wondering whether the somerset bit may actually hinder this in the future. Also noticed Somerset is mentioned in nearly all of the page urls through the site. Perhaps this is a bit spammy and just not neccesary. I can include the address of the hotel on every page anyway. What do you think? Thanks in advance for your help 🙂 Luke

Single-words high keyword density. How many is too many.
Dear All SeoMoz users, I'm a web designer for some time now. Doing some basic SEO from time to time. I just started up with brand new website. The website is not ranking very well for 2nd line keyword (keyword density < 2%), but the problem is not ranking at all for for my main keyword. I think the problem is the keyword density. For phrases that are 3-words long my keyword density is less than 4%. I suspect the problem is that keyword density for single-word phrases is between 8-12%. Please note that the 3 words with highest keyword density make my main 3-words long keyword. Is this the case? Should I be avoiding keyword density larger than 4% for single-word phrases as well? What is you experiences is this matter? Could my single-word phrases be treated as keyword stuffing by Google?

How can I make use of multiple domains to aid my SEO efforts?
About an year, the business I work for purchased 20+ domains: sendmoneyfromcanada.com sendmoneyfromaustralia.com sendmoneyfromtheuk.com sendmoneyfromireland.com The list goes on, but you can get the main idea. They thought that the domains can be useful to aid http://www.transfermate.com/ . I can set up a few micro sites on them, but from that point there will be no one to maintain them. And I'm, honestly, not too happy with hosting multiple sites on one IP and having them all link to the flagship. It is spammy and it does not bring any value to end users. I might be missing something, so my question is - Can I use these domains to boost my rankings, while avoiding any shady/spammy techniques? P.S. I had this Idea of auctioning the domains in order to cover for the domain registration fees.
