Huge amount of backlinks detected - what to do ?
-
The websites that use Yotpo review solution can display product galleries like this //imgur.com/4dHUh7O - orginal source page: http://skibox.fr/fr/veste-de-pluie-dynastar-long-shell.html
Every product in the gallery generates a link to https://yotpo.com such as https://yotpo.com/go/eAaQNjJh
This generate a huge amount of links detected in Google Search Console (GWMT) of yotpo.com
And every of those links redirects 301 to a page of the website using Yotpo review solution. Example: https://yotpo.com/go/eAaQNjJh redirects to http://skibox.fr/fr/batons-de-ski-leki-worldcup-lite-slalom-4683.html?#.VymNdr5_TwY
It seems to be similar to shorten URL links (that are legitimate), but I am not about the influence of this, what do you think ?
- Is this really influencing (in bad) the (potential) rankings of https://www.yotpo.com subdomain pages?
- What would you recommend to do?
-
Hi YotpoKaiser,
Thanks for the question. I think this brings up a really good point when it comes to the review platform space.
As you mentioned - it appears that Yotpo is doing this to track clicks back to you (that's why they 301 redirect).
If I were in your shoes, I would take one of 3 approaches (from least to most risk-averse):
- Don't worry about the links - There are plenty of websites out there that spin up copies of your website that the engineers at Google are brilliant enough to filter those out of your Google Webmaster Tools (GWT), they'll eventually get these Yotpo ones as well.
- Email the support team at Yotpo and see if they can "no-index, no-follow" the 301 redirect links that go back to your website. This is happening to you and it's happening to everyone else who is using the system. If they really want to provide a long-term review solution, this is INVALUABLE feedback that they can get.
- Disavow the links. As Eric and Deacyde above mentioned - you can go through a full analysis of the links and disavow them or disavow the entire domain.
I like taking a data-driven approach, so here's how I would decide:
-
Look at the impression data in GWT from Before/After you started using Yotpo. Look at a few of your best performing pages, that also have reviews pointing to them (very important), and see if (seasonally-adjusted*) the impressions are down.
-
If you started using Yotpo>90 days ago, you cant using this technique due to the data limitations in GWT.
-
I would pick a handful (maybe 10) pages to review first - look at ones that are the highest traffic/impressions.
-
If Impressions have bottomed out (seasonally adjusted) for these pages - disavow the domain AND email the support team at Yotpo. Here are the instructions straight from Google. Use the domain:yotpo.com flag in your file.
-
Look at the Organic session/user data in Google Analytics (GA) from before after you started using Yotpo. Use the same criteria here as you would GWT, about 10 pages, that have a decent number of monthly visits (>300).
-
If your data is small - this probably won't help much as any change could cause a big swing in it.
-
If your Organic sessions have bottomed out (seasonally adjusted) for these pages - disavow the domain AND email the support team at Yotpo.
-
If you are unsure about #1 and #2 - email the support team at Yotpo and ask them to noindex/nofollow their 301 redirects. They owe it to you as a customer NOT to mess up your SEO.
-
If you are ok with a little risk, then don't worry about it for now and monitor continuously.
- A word on seasonally adjusted data - I worked with a Ski Gear/Equipment company in the past and we saw very dramatic swings in traffic from November - February. You are probably seeing something similarly. If your work with Yotpo started during the "high season", I'd recommend seasonally adjusting it (divide the monthly session data by the % that Google Trends gives for that target keyword, in country. Yes - it's ALOT of work, but it will give you a precise idea). Since you posted this question in April, I presume that's soon after you started it and I would recommend only having your "before" traffic start sometime in Mid-March, after the high-season and into the shoulder season/summer. Weather and all other seasonality does play a factor here, but without the data telling you what's going on, you could either over/under panic and no one likes extra anxiety!
Let me know if this helps!

As Eric has mentioned above, you really should be doing backlink audits every month or every other month just to keep your site healthy and free from possible penalties.
Using a spreadsheet, entering in all backlink urls, fill in all other data you can find on them, DA, PA, backlink profile themselves, are they a directory, comment spam or are they even relevant to your site, or are they using many exact match keyword anchor texts and especially check if the backlink is still active, does it have a php error and so forth.
Fill out the spreadsheet to the best of your ability and go through and remove site's that are considered no good.
Be careful using disavow tool, google starts working on it once you upload it, if you made a mistake you can reupload the disavow file with updated changes. Make sure you have a copy of all disavow files you send to google, since it will help you very much in the future.
-
The best way to deal with new backlinks that you see is to evaluate them--determine whether or not they are natural links. If they're not natural, then consider disavowing them. If those links are low quality (low Domain Authority and Page Authority), then you might also consider disavowing them.
Besides disavowing them, you may want to contact the site owner and ask them to remove them.

Huge problem : All our Internal Links Dropped from 9.000 to 0.What happened?
Hi, I just noticed a huge large problem in our rankings. Our rankings suddenly dropped for more than 50 %. Of course, I immediately started to research the issue. And under Links, I found that we somehow lost all of our internal links! They have dropped from 9k to 0. Now, I am sure that we do have some internal links on our site ( since I put them there myself). Could you please tell me what is going on and how I can fix this issue? Our site is 1solarsolution.com and I will also attach screenshots bellow from Link Explorer, thank you. Fr08UGe

Huge Search Traffic Drop After Switching to HTTPS - No Recovery After Couple of Months
Hi In November, we have switched our website (https://www.insidermonkey.com) from HTTP to HTTPS. Initially, we noticed slight search traffic loss but later discovered it might be due to HTTPS switch. A month later we added the https version at search console, and then saw an immediate huge drop (about 25-30%). We discovered the problem might be due to poor redirection and noticed our redirects were 302s instead of 301s. To fix the problem, we implemented the 301 redirects and submitted the sitemap containing links to the old site at the new search console property (https). We've gone through points listed on the page below: https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/6073543 We fixed the redirects to 301 Double-checked the sitemaps Made sure we had a properly installed SSL certificate (Now, we get A+ from https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=www.insidermonkey.com) Made sure we have no mixed-content errors (we don't have any issues at search console.) We only avoided implementing HSTS, in case we might want to switch back to HTTP.

We had a small improvement in the following month, but our traffic did not fully recover. We wanted to test for the possibility to switch back HTTP by switching only 2 articles in our CMS to HTTP. Our traffic got worse, not only for those but for the whole site. Then we switched back those 2 articles to HTTPS again and implemented HSTS. It seems our search traffic getting worse day by day with no sign of improving. In the link below you can find the screenshot of our weekly search traffic between 1 October - 1 March. We are down from 500K weekly visitors to mere 167K last week. https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Y1TQbj_YtGG4NhLORbEWbvITUkGKUa0G Any ideas or suggestions? We are willing to get professional help as well. What is the way to find a proper consultant for such problem with relevant experience?0 -

Irrelevant backlinks - will 301 redirect cleanse the relationship?
My client has thousands of clients for whom they provided websites that used to reside in a subdirectory of their own domain. They moved them to their own domains but there are tens of thousands of backlinks on those sites pointing back to the original domain. Those backlinks are completely irrelevant and are probably hurting them by sending the wrong signals to Google on what this site really is about. My question is will the 301 redirect be enough to cleanse the relationship between my client and all their clients' sites or should I ask the client to clean up all those backlinks on their clients' sites and remove their domain from the target urls? That's a huge job, obviously.

Uncontrollable Spammy Backlinks - Disavow or Not?
Hey Mozzers, I have ran a few different backlink reports, and I noticed that one of my sites has an incredible amount of spammy backlinks. These were not done by a prior SEO, they are simmply spammy links that were scraped and inserted on terrible sites, forums, directories, etc. 100% uncontrollable. The anchor text includes anything from the domain to "live sex" and "victoria's secret coupons". There are probably close to 700 or so of these backlinks from around 150-200 domains. I have read that one should contact the webmaster, and use disavow as a last resort, but I am not sure if that advice is for spammy link building techniques, which we have no history of doing. Is this normal? What is the best way to handle this? Is it likely that these are affecting this site's ranking at the moment? The number of spammy links drastically affects the ratio of quality backlinks to spammy backlinks. This is so frustrating...

Language Detection redirect: 301 or 302?
We have a site offering a voip app in 4 languages. Users are currently 302 redirected from the root page to /language subpages, depending on their browser language. Discussions about the sense of this aside: Is it correct to use a 302 redirect here or should users be 301 redirected to their respective languages? I don't find any guideline on this whatsoever...

Transfer webshop to other domain. Will there be a huge visit/sales drop?
A client of main has a specific domain for their webshop, separately from the brand the domain. The brand domain has much more authority (according to SEOMoz), so the conclusion in an other topic was that it would be better to move the entire webshop to the same domain as the branddomain. Like moving www.webshopdomain.com to www.branddomain.com/webshop Of course all categories and important pages will have a 301 to give through the build up authority. Does anybody have experience with this? I believe in the end this will be much better because all authority will be build up at the same domain.

But I am afraid of a drop in the beginning. If there will be a sales drop, I really must give my client notice of this... I hope somebody has done this before..0 -
Does Google punish sites for Backlinks?
Here is Matt Cutts video, for those of you who have not seen it already. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4dAWb5jUws (Very Short) In this Video Matt explains that Google does not look at backlinks. Many link spamming sites have detected, there have been many website receiving warning messages in their Google web tools to deindex these links, etc.. My theory is that Google will not punish sites for backlinks. However, they manually check for "link farming sites" and warn anyone affiliated with them, just in case these links were built from a competitor. This way they can eliminate all the "Bad Link Farm" sites and not hurt anyone who does not deserve to be hurt. Google is not going to give us all their information to rank, they dont want us to rank. They want us to PPC. However, they do want to have the best SERPs available. I call it Google juggling! Thoughts?
