Redirecting M Dot Mobile Website to Responsive Design Website Questions
-
Hi amazing Moz community Couldn't find this question anywhere, and knew this was the place to ask!
We are helping a client redirect an M Dot website to a Responsive Design website. We want to retain our mobile rankings for keywords. Three questions -
-
We should use 301 redirects from the M Dot website to the new website correct? (not 302s?)
-
How long does it take for Google to understand that we have launched a responsive website? Can we remove the 301 redirects after a few days (if the M Dot website interferes/breaks the new Responsive website)?
-
We have verified an account on Google Search Console for the M Dot website, along with a mobile sitemap that has been submitted and verified. What should we do with this M Dot GSC account? Just delete it? Or keep it and upload the NEW XML Sitemap with the new WWW links (because the website is responsive).
THANK YOU!

Hi Robert,
They don't hurt so leave them in place for some time. It might be quite some time before the index is completely as you want it to be. So just let the redirects to their thing just in case Google, Bing, etc keep indexing the old URL's.
Hope that helps.

Hi Bas, one more question from the client:
At what point do we remove the redirects that are in place now for on our regular site that send users to m-dot when they are on a mobile device?
- My answer would be "when the new website is live" Is that correct?
-
Hi Robert,
Pleasure to help!
Yes, that is what i would do. At least for a couple of days until you can see that Google has seen the permanent redirects.
Otherwise you might create duplicate content. Might. Not entirely sure.

Thank you very much, Bas. Appreciate it!
When you say "keep the old sitemap in place for quite sometime" are you referring to the mobile sitemap on the m-dot domain, even though the domain is going to be removed? Are you suggesting we keep the 301 in place for as long as possible?
Thanks!
-
Hi Robert,
1. Correct: use the permanent header code
2. Good question. I don't know that specific answer. I think that period depends on all kinds of factors. I would leave the old sitemap in place for quite some time. As long as you use the permanent header code you're ok.
3. Do not throw that away! just keep that login. You can also verify crawling errors, etc with this account.
Good luck with the migration!

Redirect Juice?
Hello all! I have a partner site that is linking their product page (step 1) to our product page (step 2) and then we instantly forward them to our shopping cart page (step 3) with that product added. Will my product page (step 2) get the SEO juice from our partners link (step 1) even though we instantly forward to our shopping cart page (step 3)? Curious about ways to technically do this correctly. Thank you!

Mobile First Timeline - When Will Google Move The Remainder of Websites?
A common question from anxious webmasters who have separate/smaller mobile websites is: Â _"Will Google move my site over to mobile-first, even though I'm not "ready" yet?"Â _It's not an easy question to answer. Â Here's what we know so far: Google is currently already migrating websites over that have a strong correlation between mobile and desktop content Google is taking the migration process very slowly, and for now, is not migrating sites over that are not "ready". Google has not announced any firm timeline for when they plan to migrate the remainder of all websites. In answering this question, I typically mention all of the above to help allay any fears. I then state that it could maybe be anywhere from one year to several years before the process is over - but with a huge disclaimer that this is pure speculation, and that only Google knows for sure. Lastly, I reiterate that Google in the meantime is strongly encouraging webmasters w mobile sites to ensure that they match the desktop version (URLs, schema, video, metadata, etc). Â So the choice is to either to upgrade to responsive/adaptive, or upgrade the mobile site. Â This is where the future is going. STILL - any additional feedback / thoughts / ideas / tips on this are welcome, because I continue to struggle with answering this question for clients. Â Thanks!

Robots.txt question
I notice something weird in Google robots. txt tester I have this line Disallow: display= in my robots.text but whatever URL I give to test it says blocked and shows this line in robots.text for example this line is to block pages like http://www.abc.com/lamps/floorlamps?display=table but if I test http://www.abc.com/lamps/floorlamps or any page it shows as blocked due to Disallow: display= am I doing something wrong or Google is just acting strange? I don't think pages with no display= are blocked in real.

A 302 Redirect Question | Events Page Updates
Hello Moz World, I have a client that has a TON, like close to a thousand pages that have a 302 redirect set up. After further investigation, I found that every month they update their events page & Demo Request page, and the old events pages still exist but, get a 302 redirect to the updated page. From what I gather, this is a default mechanism set up by the hosting provider. My questions; is this an example of when to use a Rel=canonical? Also, is there a method for integrating this without having to go into every page and integrate the code snippet? And Lastly, How should I go about ensuring this doesn't happen in the future? Thanks ahead of time, you guys rock! B/R Will H.
