How do you actually perform an emotional research?
-
How do you find out what are the emotional triggers of your audience?
Is there a prevalent methodology?
I am familiar with, and I practice persona building, and logic deduction of what may trigger and what may represent a barrier for that persona.
But sometimes it's hard, for certain products which have no sex appeal it's hard to figure out. Let's say you are in the business of selling heaters/boilers online, it's tough to find any emotional factor in boiler product/vendor selection.
A well defined methodology would help, I just don't find any.

I think you would generally approach this the same way you'd approach any subjective research, which is heavy on asking questions on a survey. You could research traditional qualitative research processes to learn more about how they're conducted.
You'd be surprised by the emotions that can be hiding in an otherwise 'boring' purchase like a boiler, however. If it's the middle of winter in Chicago and snowing outside on a Tuesday night and your boiler goes out and you have a baby crying in the house and a dog that needs to get walked - I can guarantee you're feeling a ton of emotions (frustration, anxiety, stress) when you open your phone, google "chicago 24/7 furnace repair" and finally get somebody on the phone to come out that night and fix it.
Even in a B2B purchase, there are emotions and motivations that are hidden under the surface, such as picking the more expensive furnace repair vendor that has a better reputation because you need to use up your end of year budget in order to keep it for next year, and you can always justify the choice based upon their reputation or even just a Yelp score.
SO - the hard part is capturing that emotion on a survey form or getting an authentic customer response shortly after purchase, or getting somebody to be truthful with you about these motivations that may be embarrassing or incriminating or whatever.
I think you're best off doing some research on general emotions, and then creating a list of all of the considerations that go into purchasing your product (free shipping? good warranty? website looks trustworthy? my wife will like the color? etc.). Once you have each of those lists, brainstorm how various emotions will factor into each of the purchase considerations, and how it will change depending on your type of customer (b2b vs b2c, enterprise vs SMB, senior exec vs intern, etc.). This may yield a lot of ideas, or not many at all, depending on the nature of what you're selling.
I think once you complete this inventory across each product, each customer type, each purchase consideration, and each emotion - you'll have a pretty darn good idea of how emotions can be factored into your marketing program, such as how to adjust the copy on your product/service pages, and how to create entertaining or educational content that reflects these emotions.
Hopefully that helps, but let me know if I can assist further!

I always research what my top 5 competitors are doing and try to do it better. I worked on a plumbing products project and targeted the "Fast" and "Always In Stock" as well as "Deliver Today" to invoke the "need it now" emotion, which was primarily the audience's reaction.
Hope that helps.

I am not sure if this would help, but I would use the needs, wants and demands method and determine at what stage you are with your customers.
As per your heaters/boilers example - Are you targeting all of them, or solely those whom you feel you can connect with emotionally - e.g. those whose boiler has packed in and "need" a new one etc or those whose boiler is a bit old and "want" improved efficiency. Or are you targeting someone that simply has no financial restrains and can "demand" the best they can afford.
Inevitablesteps has a great bit of content that helps to describe each segment a little further.
I hope this is of some use.
Cheers

Issue for Sales Team & Funnelling Smaller Orders
Hi, Hoping somebody might have some suggestions for funnelling smaller orders and larger orders on different journeys. Basically, 90% of our business comes from 10% of customers with larger orders, like contractors and organisations who fill out leads or call us. But about 90% of the sales teams time is taken up from handling lots of smaller calls, which account for <5% of our revenue. Obviously we still want these smaller orders, but would anyone have any suggestions on moving these customers away from phone calls? We've tried to add as much content to the site as possible to answer they're questions, but they seem to just call anyway. Hope you can help!

We changed our domain, I used the move tool in Google Search Console and I am having our site redirected and go daddy, and now I spoke with someone who suggest we do a 301 redirect for all pages on our site and I’m not sure that’s the correct move.
We just changed our domain name after 15 years. when I bought the new domain name I called Go Daddy and they instructed me to contact my google G sweet admin account and change all of our emails over which I did and then I went into Shopify who is my host and changed my primary domain there and then I went back to Go Daddy and had my old website forwarded to my new site. since then there has been nothing but problems with Google. my product feed from my merchant center account has been suspended three or four times now, I tried to rename and move all of my Google accounts from my old domain to my new one, but I am not an SEO person... after making the changes I have started google chats with analytics department with the merchant center with Google as they all keep saying that it looks fine but I’m not convinced because the product feed keeps getting disapproved. So I posted an ad for help and the Guy I spoke with suggested I do a 301 redirect for every single page on my old site, But I’m concerned that might confuse things further? I’ve already started the move in Google Search console And in Shopify I added the old domain back into the domains section and am having it redirectEd that way too... I guess I’m just looking to know which way I should proceed, any and all advice is warmly welcome thank you in advance Maureen

Redirect Management on Headless Wordpress w/ React Front End
Hello everyone, As Headless Wordpress becomes more and more popular, it becomes more complicated to manage and track 301 redirects. I'm reaching out for advice on this. Our main issue right now, is that after migrating from Drupal to a Headless Wordpress/React platform we lost the ability to track, manage, and view traffic analytics for users hitting those redirects. This was something we were able to do in Drupal. Example: If we have a redirect in place we could see how many times in the past x number of days that redirect was hit by users attempting to access the old URL. Unfortunately, Yoast Premium, has been helpful with other SEO needs, but this is one that it is not able to manage. Anyone have any ideas, experience, or thoughts on this issue? Thanks for your time

Partial Website Translation - Strategy Debate
Hi We have a travel site with over 3000 pages in English. Of these around 200 relate to products and the rest are content articles, most of which with very low traffic. Certain products and pages appeal directly to users in different languages (around 20-30 out of 200 for each language). We are debating how to go about translating these pages... If we did "oursite.com/es/product", "oursite.com/de/product", etc then users entering the site on these translated pages from Google would be limited to seeing a very cut down site, bearing in mind most speak English and would also be able to interact with our English language content we are probably losing out. Also, if we detected user language on entry, we would show effectively hide most of our product and content from users. Any suggestions or ideas about how to go about this without losing engagement/conversions/creating a mess?

Reducing Negative Impact of Webpage Login Form
Our real estate website (www.metro-manhattan.com) now requires visitors to login in if they want to search our listing database. The result is that. 9 out of 10 visitors leave without searching; they simply refuse to set up an account. I have attached images of the search bar and login form. Is there a way to increase the percentage of visitors that login? We have tried to make it as simple as possible, allowing visitors to login by Facebook, Google or by providing their email address. We do not send any verification email. We are forced to. keep this login unfortunately. But is there anything we can do to reduce the visitor bounce rate? Thanks,

Google Analytics: Do 'Goals' actually work?
Hi, Hoping someone can clarify this for me. I've set a goal up whereby the rule is to pick up all pages with "Thank-you" in the destination URL (regular expression). So, when someone fills out a form, it will count as a lead. I'm about 8 weeks in to the campaign now and measuring the last 4 weeks I've had a total of 30 goals completed. I have two issues with this and I really hope someone can help clarify: Using a custom report I can see that I've actually had 52 Visits to the Thank-You pages, 49 Unique Visits and 60 pageviews. Where is Google getting the goals from? I have 51 leads in my inbox from the campaign so far. So, much closer to the above stats in the custom report than in the Goal report. Why is this? Thanking you in advance!

"How did you find out about us" accuracy research?
This is more of a conversion and usability question than an SEO question. Does anyone know if there's any comprehensive research about the accuracy of the well-known "How did you find out about us" question in web forms? I need to convince a customer that they shouldn't put the question in their form, at least not the way they do now. I hope someone can refer me to a credible online source / article about this subject?
