Would changing permalink structure of 7,500 articles be good or bad?
-
Morning everyone,
I'm the tech at a large men's lifestyle publisher and we're currently running the old /year/month/ URL structure in Wordpress.
Now I've read countless articles about pro's and con's of month date vs post type formats (/2016/06/sample-post/ vs /sample-post/) and considering we produce both evergreen and daily news content we're stuck with making a decision.
Currently we receive about 10,000 organic referrals per day (has been stuck at this for 12 months) but considering we have 7,500 articles, have 10 full-time staff and have been around for close to 7 years we think we're underperforming.
Now providing we 301 redirect every old article to the new structure is there any other reason not to do this change?
Any advice would be appreciated.

If you are changing the URL of your evergreen content each time you update it and then 301 redirecting the old URL to the new, that could definitely be impacting the organic traffic potential of that content. I would recommend keeping pages at the same URL even after updating them - so it may make sense, for your frequently-updated pages, to move them to a page without the date stamp in the URL so that you're not republishing and moving the page.

Great feedback, guys. Thank you.
The articles are mostly news related so there's not a whole lot of reason to keep them, however we tend to have people dig fairly deep into topics such as cars or watches. This content tends to be timeless.
REASON FOR THE INITIAL QUESTION
We have however also seemed to hit a wall with organic traffic. We did think this was perhaps because of having too many articles on the site but we're not too sure.
We get 10k organic referrals per day, everyday. It fluctuates maybe +-100 but it's like it's we're stuck at a ceiling.... hence the reason we're looking at changing link structure to maybe help move this imaginary log jam.
Some of our in-house practices
Old evergreen articles are always being update
URLs updated so date stamp is more recent - then 301 redirect put in place
Major newspapers and high authority websites regularly linking to use for 'expert advice'We seem to be doing everything by the book but something's stopping our growth.... maybe changing all the URLs and the structure may not help.

Good question, and you should be aware that recent large scale 301 redirect campaigns have shown a small loss (around 15%) of total link authority.
However, Google has said repeatedly that 301 redirects dilute the same amount of PageRank as it would through a regular link. Matt Cutts said this most recently in a 2013 YouTube video that has a clear discussion on the matter. Basically, what this means is that to Google the "loss in PageRank from 301 redirects is so minimal it's not an issue webmasters should even worry about."
Based on that statement, your next question on a large-scale URL change needs to be NOT SEO-focused, but UX-focused:
- Will the URL change impact your users?
- Will that URL change be a POSITIVE impact for users?
Personally, I think the most important question you need to ask yourself though isn't making the change. But AFTER you make the change can you really justify keeping 7500+ articles?
Let's be honest, are you REALLY sure all 7500 articles are high-quality? We know that even a small amount of thin or low-quality content on a domain can effect the performance of all the content, so maybe a focused content audit needs to be a priority?
Have you reviewed closely the Google Search Console Search Queries information for your articles? Any article on your site that hasn't generate traffic in 28 days is not a "high-quality article." That's the content you'd want to focus on specifically. Can that content be updated, improved and republished? Or is that content better CUT AWAY COMPLETELY from the domain so that other content has a better chance of improvement?
Just something to think about. Hope this was useful. Good luck!

Hold Off on SEO Changes After Domain Migration?
We migrated our domain on April 4th. Our domain authority has dropped from 22 to 8. Traffic is down from 90 visits a day to 10. Search console has indexed about 120 out of 600 pages. I have been told it may take several months to recovers some element of domain authority. My SEO consultant has planned on implementing the following changes immediately: 1. Change in URL structure
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | Kingalan1
2. Build internal links (my site has very few).
3. Optimize URLs for specific keywords
4. Keyword optimization of URLs using Yoast.
5. Modify Schema Do we risk confusing Google further by making these changes until are domain authority and traffic has recovered? Is it safe to proceed with some "softer" changes such building internal links and keyword optimizing text whicl avoiding more disruptive changes such as re-writing URLs? Are we better off focusing on off site ranking factors such as link building and local SEO until domain authority recovers? How about only adding new content to the site such as blog posts and listings? To complicate matters the site is old and dated and we are working on a new UX design. So perhaps it would be better to launch the new UX at the exact same time as the onsite SEO optimization occurs. This could be less work and less disruptive. At the same time I would very much like to enjoy benefits of optimizing SEO now. Any thoughts????? Also, my domain migration has killed traffic. It is very concerning!! Is a 90% drop in traffic normal in the first ten days!? Thanks everyone!!!

Temporary Domain Changes
Hi All, Our development team needs to do a temporary site name change from www.sitename.com to new.sitename.com and then wants to return to www.sitename.com. They need to do this for the whole site due to how it's built with single sign on (SSO) and how certain post login pages utilize pre login pages and need to keep people logged in. This process is changing with a CMS upgrade and website and post login pages will be independent of the pre login pages moving forward. My question is what is the best way to manage this transition? Right now it seems like the best solution I've been able to work out with development is to reduce the domain shift down to one week and use 302 Redirects, don't index the new.sitename.com site, and for that week and take my lumps as they come from search. Looking for any other suggestion that may help marketing work with dev without casting blame on any teams for drops in organic traffic.

OSE - How to determine good links to build on...?
Hey Guys, Weather it be OSE, ahrefs, etc. How do you determine if the link is worth using to build a backlink on? I know to look for a higher DA/PA and overall established links. I want very quality sites for external links (as we all do) but I also want to know what to look for and what to bypass when determining if I should build a backlink on the domain. These are a Few examples / questions i have sorry if they are basic: (the below are all specific examples) 1. If a site has an article and that article page is a DA 65 / PA 1 with Zero (0) established links to that article my backlink is on; would it be link building worthy? Should I leave a backlink, why? ex. lots of different blogspot.com blogs pointing back at my site..^^ Same domian, different blog any benefit? 2. If a site is a PR2 DA 30/ PA 32 with 14 root domains, 250 total links.... Would a link like this give me any benefit or should I skip links like this? Why? 3. What main factors do you focus on/look for and know when & when not leave a backlink to your site when using a tool like OSE, Ahrefs? 4. Should I even worry about a sites PR when linkbuilding since PR doesnt play that big of a role anymore opposed to high quality backlinks? Ive seen PR 7 sites outranked by PR1 site with 200 high quality backlinks to it Thanks for any help and any help is GREATLY appreciated. 🙂

Published Articles + Spam Links
Can you be a victim of your own success? So your write a quality article on your website. You educate your audience and hope quality trusted authority sites will link back to your article. Great, all those plus points adding to your SEO.

On the down side you get poor quality sites with no real SEO value linking to your article. My Question Is This: What impact will poor quality sites have on your SEO?
What impact will changing the Anchor Text to something unrelated to the article content have on SEO?
Are there any other considerations?

Permalink question
For 5 years I have used the permalink custom structure: /%postname% without the end backslash. I didn't think the difference was that big of a deal, yet last month I was curious of what benefits would happen if I made the change. To my surprise my rankings took a slight dive, but recovered stronger than before. As the URL itself doesn't require a redirect the posts and pages loaded the same with or wothout the "/" But now in Open Site Explorer, all my URL's have no page Authority. All the links i built were pointing to links without the backslash: example.com/post-name Questions: Did Google figure out the change, hence the dip in rankings and strong return? Will keeping /%postname%/ even though many links are pointing to a non backslash URL comeback to haunt me? Is there anything I can do to help lead Google to better see the changes I've made? thx

Ecommerce best-of-the-web article - big article - navigation tricks
Hello, We're writing our biggest article and trying to make it best-of-the-web. Custom illustrations, comprehensive content, maybe video slideshows How do I help people navigate this big thing? Is there some pretty navigation systems you've seen work? There's a lot of sections and my only idea so far is to use an anchor/id href attribute for each section having a big list of sections at the top of the article.

Are free WordPress templates bad for SEO?
Hello, I often build sites using WordPress. The other day I read an article in which the author stated that the sites built using the free WordPress template are not SEO-friendly. Could someone please confirm this statement? Does this mean that I need to develop themes myself or buy WordPress templates? Thank you for your help.
