Multiple page rank - harm or good?
-
Can someone explain this to me, as I just ranked a page on our website and intended to do the same for 3 other pages. our home page is currently ranked well, but after reading this (below from Moz) I'm concerned if i'm doing more harm then good. I just ranked the page 3 days ago, I haven't seen any drops yet.
When multiple pages with the potential to rank well are combined into a single page, they not only stop competing with each other, but also create a stronger relevancy and popularity signal overall. This will positively impact your ability to rank well in the search engines.
Thanks in advance, Lauren.

Wow, thank god!

Yeah the Mozscape index on June 22nd is most likely why your DA dropped. It wasn't a Google algorithm change so it shouldn't affect your rankings.
-
One last thing, I dropped 3 points in my DA. I just heard that there was a new index on the 22nd June. My question is: will this effect my rankings?

Google has gotten much smarter when it comes to differentiating between similar keywords. It really depends what the page is about. Best practice is to try to target a unique keyword phrase for each page, but it's totally fine if part of that keyword phrase is used on other pages on your site. If the pages are pretty much the same, you might want to combine the pages, or using a 301 redirect/rel canonical to tell Google what page is the most important.
-
Thank god, that's what I was hoping to hear. Thank you for you time!
-
Looks good to me. Those pages shouldn't be competing in the SERPs.
-
This is really a follow-up question, but what if you have several pages targeting slightly different, but related keywords? So to use the example above, what if MissThumann had separate pages targeting:
- auto insurance
- automobile insurance
- california auto insurance
- auto insurance policies
- etc
Would these pages still compete with each other since the keywords are permutations of each other?
-
To be sure I understand, would you mind casting your professional eye over the two pages. The second is the one I just ranked. The first is my home page. Many many thanks
This is my home page: http://thumannagency.com/
And this is the page I just ranked http://thumannagency.com/business-insurance/liability-insurance ( I updated the verbiage)

Hi Lauren,
This is true in the case of keyword cannibalism. For example, lets say you have a page you are trying to rank for the keyword "Auto Insurance," but you also have two other pages that target the same keyword. These pages will end up competing (cannibalizing) against each other. To combat this issue, you can use a canonical URLs. This will let Google know what page is the most important. Here is a guide on MOZ for how to go about using them.
https://moz.com/learn/seo/canonicalization
However, if the pages are targeting different keywords, you have nothing to worry about.
Hope that helps!

Page Layout Updates and Mobile Pages with Ads
I have been trying to do some research on the Page Layout Algorithm and Top Heavy Ads and much of what I read does not mention about mobile pages as apposed to desktop. I am curious if the Page Layout updates can be effected by mobile pages as well and if there is any good articles on this subject. Also is this Algorithm been incorporated into its regular algorithm or do we still have to wait for refreshes to see the impact? Cesar

Wrong Page is Ranking
My client is an Ecommerce reseller of a few major scooter brands. We currently rank fifth for a particular brand name but our main brand page isn't the one that ranks. Instead, it's a product page. The main brand page has an A rating from Moz for the desired keyword phrases. Neither page has any backlinks. Any ideas on why our main brand page would be outranked by a product page? What could we do to change this?

Too Many On-Page Links
Hello. So, my SEO team has worked very hard to finally resolve RogerBot/GoogleBot specific Crawl Errors either manually or programmatically can be fixed for our Budget Blinds USA Pro Campaign. We've done a good job even if a lot of it came from Robots.txt file entries as this was the most efficient way our client chose to do it. Good news is most of it is CMS configuration and not bad site architecture. That being said our next big volume of Crawl Errors is "Too Many On-Page Links". Our Moz DomainRank is 61. Our client, on this new version of the website, added a large nav-based footer which has duplicate links from the Header Main Navigation. I believe our solution is to put in No-Follow Metatags at the Footer Link Level, so we don't zap Page Authority by over-dividing as you recommend. Is this the best way to resolve this? Is there any risk in this? Or is a 61 DomainRank high enough for RogerBot and GoogleBot to crawl these anyway? Please advise,

Can a page lose ranking because it has too many bold tags?
I run a product search website for the Engineering Sector. Each of the companies listed on the website has a profile page. This page used to rank very well in google. Over the last couple of weeks these pages disappeared for google i.e they fell about 20 to 30 spots in the search results for relevant keywords like the Manufacturer Name. I was trying to analyze the page and found that Each of the Categories that the manufacturer supports was listed in "bold" and linked to the page for that category. A manufacturer can support up to 20 or 30 categories so this results in about 20 or 30 Bold keywords. Is this a bad practice? Could this be a reason for a drop in ranking or do bold keywords on a page not matter? What are your views?
